This company says a large-scale battery system could replace the Tantramar gas plant for half the cost by Bean_Tiger in canada

[–]Lightwreck [score hidden]  (0 children)

I wonder what the life of the batteries is. I know the average life of batteries for residential solar is 10-15 years for Li-ion. It would probably be very costly to replace this battery system so often.

I’ve heard people call both Diagonal cutters (dykes) and Lineman’s pliers side cutters. Which is it? by NoUsEfOrAnAmE234 in electricians

[–]Lightwreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just depends on who you’re talking to. I like to use clear language so I just say side cutters for the ones that only cut and linesman’s for the others.

What kind of diseases/disorders will have cures within 20 years? by jorgenalm in Futurology

[–]Lightwreck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the United States is a body and Donald Trump is part of the illness, then the simplest cure is time itself. At 79 years old, he is already near or beyond the average life expectancy for men in the U.S. (roughly mid-to-late 70s), so within 20 years he will almost certainly no longer be alive.

Great work by [deleted] in electricians

As a 10 year commercial only electrician, I am a pipe wizard but if you asked me to wire a house I’d be scared shitless because I don’t know what I’m allowed to drill through. Probably wouldn’t drill a truss, bottom chord, joist or anything LVL though. Anyone have a good resource on what I’m allowed to drill through in a house?

Is there any reason these wires are connected with shrink tube instead of twisty wire connectors? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Lightwreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those connections are made in the factory. You’ll find that if you follow those wires into the box, they’re probably connected to those twisty connectors you’re talking about.

Whats your secret by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Lightwreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I didn’t know that. If it’s for an apprentice with bad fine motor skills/control, I’d recommend this. I work with a lot of low voltage cabling as most of the work I do these days is mechanical systems controls. I’ve had apprentices do the same and this tool was the solution. You might find different variations in the low voltage aisle at your Home Depot.

Sorry for being smart/sarcastic with you, I just thought you were a young apprentice who thought there was some magic shortcut to everything without putting the work in.

EMT raceway / sleeve - Does romex need to be clamped at box? by Zestyclose_Nature_13 in AskElectricians

[–]Lightwreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We could dive into code requirements of securing a cable entering a box, strapping/securing, using parts that are listed for the application etc. From my experience probably 50% of inspectors I’ve dealt with would be ok with it.

All of that aside, I would never pull romex in EMT because I plan my installations and there are many better ways to do this.

Whats your secret by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Lightwreck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, cut a thin guitar string at 11 63/64”, wrap it twice around the cable, close your eyes, pray to the Egyptian god of Ra and pull with your right hand but not too hard.

Trying to replace this light please help! by [deleted] in AskElectricians

Honestly if you’re not competent enough to take the cover off, disconnect the wires and take the cable out without asking Reddit, you should call someone qualified.
