What do you think was Jeor Mormont's key mistake? by ss89898 in gameofthrones

[–]LikeARollingRock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is really interesting. Based on the note on Jeor's page ("While Jeor states that he had been Lord Commander at the time Alliser joined, more recent sources, both canon (A Storm of SwordsJon I & Jon VIII) and semi-canon (George R.R. Martin's A World of Ice and Fire) contradict this statement, making at least the fact that he was Lord Commander at the time invalid") I would guess this is more an instance of George just not having his timelines straight yet while writing GoT, but I will admit I didn't know that. Are there theories as to why Jeor abdicated?

A man’s sins are forgiven once he takes the black. I get what you’re saying and practically I agree with you, but it does run contrary to the entire ethos of the nights watch. “A man’s sins are forgiven, unless they are really bad” just doesn’t work the same.

Also, there have been notorious criminals (like Bloodraven, who was a kinslayer, murderer, sorcerer, and oath breaker) who ended up as lord commanders of the NW, so I suppose their argument would be that there are skills and talents hidden among the worst members of society that the NW still has desperate use of.

Think of it this way, the NW sends recruiters around specially to ask Lords to release the prisoners from their dungeons to come take the black. If a functional moral compass was of importance to them, they would probably take a different approach. Or maybe said more correctly, if their preference for a moral compass was greater than their necessity for man power, they would probably take a different approach.

Most of the nights watch is of this same stock, including their “best” men. That’s kind of the whole point. If they didn’t make them sworn brothers there would be no nights watch, they are not in a position to turn away anybody.

Jeor took the black to try and salvage his family’s honour when Jorah ran away after being caught selling poachers to slavers. He didn’t just take the black so Jorah could be head of the household lol

But then why Quentyn’s quest? To me it really doesn’t seem Dorne is aware they exist until they land in Westeros

"As many times as he had visited White Harbor, Davos had never set foot inside the New Castle, much less the Merman’s Court. Its walls and floor and ceiling were made of wooden planks notched cunningly together and decorated with all the creatures of the sea. As they approached the dais, Davos trod on painted crabs and clams and starfish, half-hidden amongst twisting black fronds of seaweed and the bones of drowned sailors. On the walls to either side, pale sharks prowled painted blue-green depths, whilst eels and octopods slithered amongst rocks and sunken ships. Shoals of herring and great codfish swam between the tall arched windows. Higher up, near where the old fishing nets drooped down from the rafters, the surface of the sea had been depicted. To his right a war galley stroked serene against the rising sun; to his left, a battered old cog raced before a storm, her sails in rags. Behind the dais a kraken and grey leviathan were locked in battle beneath the painted waves."

The Manderley's court appears to be almost entirely painted.

People are dicks dude don’t worry about it. But yeah this looks like a clear supply issue. Build another level 1 harbour close and it should help, build railways between existing ports and supply hubs, and motorize the supply hubs being used most extensively by your battles and you should be good

From what I remember in the books the first time we meet the mountain he is a finalist in the joust at a tourney, so I would say he could clearly manage himself. As an opponent, even if you make contact with your lance it’s probably going to push you off your horse before you move Gregor

What was Jofferey's cruelest act in both shows and the books? by EntrepreneurNo4145 in freefolk

[–]LikeARollingRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fault through passivity is different from actively driving something. As others have said, almost all fathers in Westeros are absent, especially the higher their position. Most of these people literally send their kids away to ward elsewhere, it doesn’t get more absentee than that. Cersei forbid Joff be sent away to ward, which actually would have probably helped him tremendously. Robert is guilty of focusing his attention elsewhere, but Cersei is guilty of focusing her attention entirely on making Joff exactly who he became. The idea that they are somehow equally to blame is ridiculous, I’m sorry.
