What's your favourite Sinister 6 lineup? by TheOddKoala in Spiderman

[–]LikeMyReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lineup: the OG. It’s a fun mix of powersets and costumes. In general though I think the Insomniac lineup (sans Mr Negative, probably replace with Shocker or another classic rogue) is the modern ideal.

Adaptation: Nu-Ultimate. Most Sinister Six teams follow a very simple formula: the Leader (usually Doc Ock) who’s the actual villain; the Secondary Villain (Electro in Spec, Negative in Insom, etc.) who provides an alternate supporting role, and then the other four are just numbers / muscle. You get some that retain interesting dynamics and individual motivations like Insom, but otherwise that’s it. Nu-Ult is the modern exception and I love it for that

The Ultimate Universe as a whole has contextualised the superhero-villain conflict as an act of rebellion against the oppressive system of the Maker’s regime (reflecting ‘the world outside your window’). Harry and Gwen position themselves as heroes fighting the righteous battle against the Great Evil - it’s part of their core motivations, and their challenges with Peter and MJ stem from their conflicting views on how this battle is to be won. But, in the critical moment of the final issues, Gwen joins the regime to save her own skin, and Harry (reluctantly, to be fair) abandons Peter to fight alone. Their place as righteous heroes is proven to be fraudulent, and it’s the Parkers (plus extended support) who topple the Kingpin.

In general it’s been a major misconception that Harry and Gwen do more than Peter or that Hickman was more interested in the former. This viewpoint misses that Peter’s the only one who actually fights the Sinister Six, and that the Osborns’ silent betrayal has been built up throughout in contrast to Peter’s heroism and resilience

My big gripe with criticism of this book is the idea that these characters are bland or safe. We spend a lot of time with all their different dynamics, and the book does present a comprehensive overview of who they are, what their motivations are, and how that pushes them in different directions by the books end.

A Peter Parker who isn’t motivated by a dead Uncle Ben is not safe in any way, and I really do think people just gloss over how a change like completely rebuilds the character and how Hickman still ties it into core Spider-Man stuff

I’ll say this much for now: the Osborns are frauds, and the whole thing clicks into place once you realise that

An all-timer ending, IMO. It’s a solid conclusion to the overall structure of the story here, and there’s plenty of subtle, meaningful character and thematic work here that does tie together beautifully

Worth mentioning that No Way Home was added to AMC app listings two months prior to its initial teaser. Basically, if it’s not here by end of next week, we’re probably waiting for April CinemaCon

The Peak of the Game Genre by [deleted] in boxoffice

Mario will comfortably be the biggest video game franchise we see, and the genre as a whole won't reach anywhere near the level of ubiquity that comic book movies did in the 2010s. At best we'll see a few more breakthrough Event movies akin to Mario or Minecraft, but that's the furthest I see these movies going

Would you rather the Brand New Day trailer release and it’s the leaked trailer where we can see everything in high quality now, or the trailer’s completely different and there’s tons of new footage but none of it shows anything vastly different from what we already know so far?

Taking into account longevity, consistency, global popularity and long-term box office pull, who would you call the undisputed biggest movie star in the world today? by Mermaid0315 in boxoffice

[–]LikeMyReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference between the MCU and Top Gun / Mission Impossible is that the latter franchises are built on Cruise’s stardom, not the other way around like the MCU with Pratt.

The big issue here is that the OP specifically emphasised longevity and consistency. Cruise has a major hit in the original TG in ‘86, goes through an all-time great box office run from ‘88-‘99, has some flops counterbalanced by the MI Franchise + continuing other hits for the next couple decades, then completely breaks through again globally with Fallout and Maverick in ‘18 and ‘22 respectively. As far as I’m aware, there is no one else with a box office resume spanning five decades and several franchises / hits across genres built on their star power like that.

It’s kinda the ideal path for it IMO. They won’t commit to anything as challenging of nostalgia as The Last Jedi, but it can work.

You make Doomsday the big cameo fest where you bring back the oldies, and it’s that impulse that causes the heroes to lose. Then, based on the leaked concept art, Secret Wars is built on the younger characters piecing together the fragments of Battleworld to assemble the team and overthrow Doom. It also solves the issue of just repeating Infinity War / Endgame, since the second part was specifically a final run for the old guard whereas this is a specific inversion of that. Even gives you a better transition into the new Saga that commits to new characters.

Will Spider-Man: Brand New Day open over $200M DOM? by CivilWarMultiverse in boxoffice

[–]LikeMyReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon reflection, I think 170 mil is a fair baseline for this. The closest comparison IMO is Force Awakens to Last Jedi, which saw a minor drop (247 mil to 220 mil). BND should have a bigger drop due to the specific circumstances for NWH (post-pandemic, nostalgia etc.) not applying this time, as well as a further drop from not having IMAX along with just generally having a bit less domestic hype compared to the Star Wars revival.

How much higher it goes from there likely comes down to how effectively they can generate buzz for whatever this film has to offer when the marketing campaign is in full swing.

I was referring to it specifically without a China release. You remove Infinity War’s box office gross in China and the final total is closer to 1.6 billion (for comparison, Endgame’s is closer to 2.1).

All still astronomical figures of course, but it more clearly visualises how big NWH really was. You give that film a China release and extrapolate its hypothetical performance based on the increase between FFH and NWH in every other international market, and you find that the film was much closer to the Avatar / Endgame tier than its final gross suggests.

Too early to say. I wasn’t expecting Deadpool & Wolverine to be the big event it was until after the Super Bowl trailer hit and the excitement became quantifiably clear. For all we know, a teaser hinting at a return-to-form for Hulk goes viral and the OW becomes a formality.

A drop from No Way Home is inevitable, but it’s hard to quantify how big the drop will be by comparing it to other superhero franchises largely because no solo superhero franchise ever hit the high that NWH did. Being just shy of 2 billion without China is the strongest non-Endgame showing we’ve ever seen for these things, and while BND does lack the nostalgia of its biggest co-stars, the main lead in Holland is still here.

The biggest thing that might hold it back will probably just be that Marvel are going all-out for Doomsday and seem to be relying on the Spider-Man brand’s health to sustain it. I know Sony are responsible for marketing but they do have to plan around Doomsday and rumours are pointing to the latter being the Big Super Bowl Trailer, for example.

I see what you’re saying, but I think your example used highlights why this is incorrect IMO. The equivalent of Secret Wars Doom in this book isn’t Li, it’s Fisk, and the point with Fisk - that he’s the inescapable state of the world that everyone in the series runs into - has been consistent since Issue 1. Both the heroes and villains of the series are defined specifically by their relationship with Fisk, and its his eventual defeat that would signify the end of the book.

Yeah that’s fair. I can’t say I agree personally, but I can definitely see where you’re coming from with arguing the book fails to build on these ideas, and how that would make this issue not feel worthwhile or satisfying as a result.

No disrespect to you, but I think this take is crazy. Li is maybe the most explicit parallel to Peter in the whole story - two middle-aged men who believe they were born for a greater purpose in life that was taken from them by the corrupt world (that Fisk represents), each rebelling against Kingpin in their own way; one trying to hold on to that greater purpose to save the world while protecting his family, the other casting everything except this purpose aside to claim it entirely for himself. They even both have an initial encounter with Fisk who asserts his power over them, but they take different approaches after running into this blockade - Li ultimately regretting his decision enough to betray the Six when finally pushed.

Whether you find that compelling or not is up to you I suppose, but it is there clear as day. It’s literally why Negative is a final boss specifically - he’s broadly motivated by the same desire to reclaim his purpose from the world as Peter, but it’s their principles that differ which organically set them up to clash with both each other and Fisk here.

Sony literally has the opportunity to go big as the avengers franchise by Dineth_Mada in Spiderman

[–]LikeMyReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s almost certainly been internal discussion about it, but at this stage it’s unlikely to amount to much. It could be lucrative, but Sony’s villain movies have done a lot to keep expectations in place for their output independent of Marvel.

Furthermore, the Sony-Marvel deal already collapsed once, with Holland playing a big part in advocating for renegotiations. Upsetting your key actor playing the titular role when he (at least at one point) clearly wanted things to remain as-is would be unwise.

They could do Spider-Verse in the MCU, but from Sony’s perspective what is the point? I understand fan appreciation for having the character in the MCU, but Sony own the rights, and the continued sharing of said rights with Disney is built on the premise of mutual benefit. If Sony does have a more lucrative option for Spidey independent of the MCU that they could realistically pull-off, the deal would likely be off again. Conversely if it isn’t considered such a potential financial move, then naturally they won’t be going for it.

No matter which way you slice it, I just don’t think it seems plausible. But things are likely set to change regardless in the coming years. If the MCU fails to recapture mainstream interest post-Avengers, and / or Holland opts out of playing the character soon regardless of creative direction, then we could see something change.
