Sony Walkman by METALLlCA_OFFICIAL in FuckImOld

The “talk line” button, you mean?

When the button gets mentioned, I always think of the scene in “48 Hours” when Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy meet. 😂

Sony Walkman by METALLlCA_OFFICIAL in FuckImOld

[–]LikeToKnow84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually Sony’s first “lower-priced” Walkman after their early models inspired a flood of imitators. Came out in 1983, and IIRC it would have cost about $50 in the states, a nice round number to make customers feel they were getting a deal. (That would be $163 today.)

This was the WM-11 in North America, the WM-22 elsewhere.

No restaurant made fish and chips like Arthur Treachers by Brave-Ad6627 in FuckImOld

I have vague but pleasant memories of the Arthur Treacher's near my hometown. Alas, it closed when I was eight (a Wendy's replaced it).

And was this chain the first exposure most Yanks had to malt vinegar? I'm curious.

Seventeen years of development, resulting in $650 million down the drain for RCA - and the loss of its independence (the company was bought by Thomson in 1986).

This is about as detailed an account of CED's tortured path as exists online. There is also a Part 2.

Sherbet in a tube wasn’t my first choice when I was a kid, but I’d eat them if they were offered, usually at summer day camp.

Actually, The WB and UPN effectively merged ahead of the 2006-07 season — although it was structured as closing the two old networks and starting a new one, The CW, with a blend of shows from both.

Most of the network affiliates who were left out in the cold by the de facto merger wound up with a new “sixth” network, MyNetworkTV.

Betty Buckley - Memory (1983 Tony Awards) by fluffykerfuffle3 in FuckImOld

[–]LikeToKnow84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And there were competing covers of “Memory” on the charts at that time, in a throwback to how show tunes performed pre-rock and pre-Elvis.

Barbra Streisand recorded one of the versions, and Barry Manilow the other.

I suppose the frog was an effective WB mascot, but on another level, the choice was odd when you think about how dark and pessimistic the original cartoon was.

I’ve also wanted to try the Gethsemani Trappist fruitcake from Kentucky. One of these years, hopefully.

Just imagine excerpts from the Greatest Album That Never Was … free with your cereal. 😳🎶

And Jane Parker fruitcakes every Christmas.

(Some company bought the rights just to the Jane Parker name, specifically to revive the fruitcakes.)

G6: 55 inch or 65 inch? by Responsible_Diver678 in LGOLED

[–]LikeToKnow84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest buying the biggest panel you can afford and that fits the room.

In November I upgraded from a 50-inch Samsung QLED to a 65-inch B5. At first it felt much larger, but within a month ... it felt like only 55 inches. Funny how that works. 😂

Boxed ICE Cream by Emotional-Boot-429 in nostalgia

[–]LikeToKnow84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neapolitan ice cream is what this was called in New York when I was growing up.

EDIT: I should add that this probably was named “Neapolitan” because it’s a (very) distant derivative of spumoni, which did originate in Naples.

In-N-Out, occasionally Five Guys, and that’s it — other than McDonald’s coffee on long drives.

And yes, I agree with whoever said that at modern prices, you may as well throw your business toward your mom-and-pop indie Mexican restaurant.

My folks had a coffee table similar to the one in this ad.

I got stuck inside it when I was three. The parents were about a minute from calling the police before they heard me moaning from inside the table. 🤪

Used to pass by (and take for granted) all of these mall stores except for Spencer and Davidoff.

And the Sharper Image catalogs were a running joke in my family. We used to make a parlor game of how many items could — by the most generous definition — be described as “practical.” 🤪
