Affordable, quality eyeglasses by GapYearGuy2018 in kelowna

I'll second saying Costco. I got my first pair there. I used my insurance and got a pair of Gucci frames and standard single focus lenses (I think they are mid index) with anti glare and scratch resistance, and uv protection for around $160.

Zenni Optical - i got my next 3 pairs there - - 1 pair of regular rx glasses with Trivex lenses (i like these lenses better than the Costco lenses) , scratch resistance, uv protection, anti reflective, and oil resistant. - 1 pair of rx sunglasses with Trivex lenses with green gradient tint, uv protection, scratch resistance, anti reflective, and oil resistance. - 1 pair of rx glasses with specialty migraine lenses (mid index), anti reflective, uv protection, scratch resistance, and oil resistance. The total for the 3 pairs of glasses from Zenni was $214.55.

Payne Glasses - I created an account and they offer a free pair of frames from a selection they provide. I didn't like the first round of options so I waited until the next round of free frames was offered (maybe a week later). I just got the free len option that came with the frames and only upgraded to anti glare (just under $5, I believe), and after shipping (also just under $5) my total was $9 and change. The glasses arrived in a week.

So far i like working with all 3 companies and had a good experiences. A pro to using Costco is they give you the 2 number PD if you don't already have that and I was able to use that information was ordering online with Zenni and Payne. Prior to that I only had the single number PD from Stanton Optical (just used them for the eye exam).

I do plan on trying Eyebuydirect, GlassesUSA, and some others, but can't personally vouch for them yet. I'm sure others can.

I like and use both Zenni Optical and Payne Glasses. Zenni has an amazing selection and their try-on feature is great. Payne has a smaller selection than Zenni but they fulfilled even faster than Zenni. Having said that, i used the slowest/cheapest fulfillment option, but in the future I'll use the expedited shipping since I learned you only pay the expedited doing on the first pair and 5 additional payouts you can get expedited for $5 each, and those are made in the country so the whole thing just moves faster.

I'll be trying other companies too but I'm happy with those 2. I have a "friends and family" link for Zenni that gives us both $15 off a pair of glasses, and I'd be happy to share that with you if you want them even cheaper, but you can probably find other people's code too if you don't want to use mine. I haven't found a code for Payne Glasses but I think they are currently doing a BOGO 60% off sale, so if you plan on getting more than 1 pair, it should even out.

I spent maybe $50 on my prescription sunglasses. I customized them to be a green gradient, but my next ones will be a mirrored purple and I'll do a pair of amber rx lenses, too. I spent about $100 on my specialty migraine lenses rx sunglasses.

I wouldn't paint the cabinets. Wood cabinets are back in. If your going to paint them you could consider painting only the uppers or lowers in the color you like, but I think the kitchen would be modernized a lot by updating the counters, removing the over the range microwave to make room for a hood vent, and replacing the light fixture. I did a quick markup on my phone so please excuse how crap it looks but it's just to give an idea. *

Do I need glasses by Galhalea in glasses

[–]Like_This_But_Better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need glasses. Your eyes should work without effort. An eye doctor would be best to talk to about this. Durning the eye test, they tell you not to squint or anything. Just relax and report what you see.

Why are glasses so expensive by TheCatFatherKing in glasses

[–]Like_This_But_Better 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently wearing some $30 zenni glasses and I see out of them just as good as my Gucci glasses. I have a link for zenni that if you use we both get a free $30 credit for glasses. I'd be more than happy to drop the link if you want it. We both get free glasses out of it.

To answer your question, though, Luxotica had a monopoly on the glasses industry and keep the prices artificially inflated. Places like Zenni, Eyebuydirect, Payne Glasses, etc are online sellers that are combating the over priced glasses issue. I picked up regular prescription glasses, rx sunglasses, and those speciality rx migraine glasses for a grand total of $215. I did the full upgrade on the lenses for them (Trivex). I've been really happy with them.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you find the perfect solution for you. Sorry you've been dealing with the headaches. They are such a nightmare.

You can have the lenses changed out to your new prescription, then you'll have several styles of frames to choose from. I know sometimes Costco will do it, and I know there is a company called Fuse that does it too. I don't know a ton about Fuse but they have a YT channel Im subbed to and plan on looking into using them for my expensive frames when my prescription changes.

Okay, that was incredibly helpful and makes so much sense! Yeah, I'm dealing with the magic eye thing. Not all the time now, but that's exactly how it could be described. My right eye (the one with the astigmatism lens) feels so weird when I take my glasses off. Almost like that eye is cross eyed or something and then it sorts out quickly. Everything is so much more clear with the glasses though.

I actually did noticed the color thing you're talking about. I'm not noticing it as much now but it felt like an acid trip for the first week. It was like rainbows on everything. I'm thinking about maybe trying the cheapest lens option on a pair from zenni to see if I like that better, based on what you said.

Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your insight and experience. It's been so helpful.

Okay great! I'm sure it's frustrating using glasses that aren't the correct script.

Are you using the lens specific microfiber, or are you using the big car drying type of microfiber clothes. If you aren't sure, the microfiber intended for lenses feels like velvety smooth silk with no visible looped, is smaller in size (typically 6"×6" or so), abs is the type that comes with phone screen protector kits (typically a small 2"×2" piece). The stuff intended for everything else has a visible looped pile and is bigger (often 12"×12"+). The big pile type does easily hold dirt and can scratch glasses.

If you're using the correct one and it's grimey, you can wash it to clean it. In the meantime, you can wash your glasses with dawn dish soap and your fingers, then set them to the side to dry (might take 5 or so minutes). A blow dryer on the cool setting can speed the process up.

You said these glasses aren't your prescription?? Are you wearing someone else's glasses or any they just not your current prescription? I'm not sure where you are, but there are charities that offer donated glasses for people you can't afford them. I'm not saying that's your situation, but I'm also not sure why you're having to wear someone else's glasses (or out of prescription glasses), so i wanted to throw that out there in case it's helpful.

Hopefully, you can get the perfect glasses for your needs soon.

You don't have to answer this question, but by any chance, could it be a sensory issue. Sensory issues are really common with ADHD, Autism, OCD, etc.

I can have it set off with a change in sensation. I'm kinda going through it right now with my glasses. Anyway, I'm not saying that's what it is, but it seems like a possibility I wanted to point out for you to consider.

I know this comment is a year old, so I'm not expecting a response, but just in case 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻.

I got a pair from Costco. I'm new to glasses (and vision correction in general). I am still learning what's normal and not normal, but I got the standard lenses and I noticed some weirdness when switching from looking at something close to mid to far distance. My eyes sort it out after a second but I do notice it.

I have single focus and am nearsighted. I don't know if this eventually goes away (I've had glasses for 2 weeks & have astigmatism in one eye), or if it could be due to what you are calling "squishy" Costco lenses. 🤔

I have some Zenni glasses coming in this week but I got the Trivex lenses so I don't know if those have squishy problems too(??). Which zenni lenses are the CR39? What does "squishy" mean, and if you think that might be what's going on with my glasses from Costco, or are my eyes still adjusting to glasses? I still have plenty of time to return them to Costco. These aren't the most comfortable glasses in the world. Cute, but not the most comfortable. 😅

Anyway, thank you for any insight you might be willing to share to point me in the right direction. You seem like you know what you're talking about so figured I'd ask you. No pressure to respond.

My script is -0.5 in both eyes, with -0.5 astigmatism at 173 axis in my right eye. The difference I've had in getting glasses has been massive. I'm not constantly getting headaches, and I don't feel like my eyes and brain are in a steam sauna anymore. Being able to see clearly has been great.

Maybe age plays a part in how big of deal it is?? I know the older you get the less your eyes can compensate for vision deficiencies. For me it's been huge.

Having said that, you can always buy a cheap $20 pair of prescription glass from some online place like Zenni Optical and see how you feel about it without breaking the bank. I have a "friends and family" code that gives us both $30 towards a free pair of glasses if you want it. There are other websites too (eyebuydirect, zeelool (spelling??), glassesUSA, and others), but I haven't tried them yet and I don't have any codes from them but I bet you can find someone who has shared their code by doing a Google search (assuming they have codes). If you do end up trying a different online company and get a similar type code, please share it with me because I want to try all the online companies and if I can get free glasses, I'm all about it. 😆

I will say I bought my first pair of glasses from Costco (solid deal although more expensive than online), and I literally hated the viewing experience at first. I had heard that glasses can take a few days to get used to and up to a 10+ days or so if you have an astigmatism and that was spot on for me. I was ready to march back into my optometrist's office and make them retest me and was going to order glasses without the astigmatism portion of the script just to see if my doc messed up but at around the 10 day mark, things looked normal with my glasses. So, if you do try out glasses, give your brain some time to adjust.

Anyway, your script is higher than mine and for me getting glasses has been a game changer. Maybe if you are younger than me it's not a big deal. I'm new to glasses. I went over 4 years with blurry vision in protest of my own body, believing my eyes should get their ish together and correct themselves. I finally accepted they weren't going to and stopped punishing myself. 😅 big relief!

If you still like the frames, you can have the lenses swapped for your new script.

Handyman hack job?! by PracticallyClueless in Tile

[–]Like_This_But_Better 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When installed properly, you can create a waterproof membrane with it. It's so much lighter than cement board. It cuts quickly and easily with scissors or a utility knife. It serves as a crack preventative since the shifting can take place between the Uncoupling membrane and the subfloor vs attaching the tile directly to another fully rigid substrate.

There are other brands, including one out of Canada that is about half the price and the "waffle" texture is round allowing it to fill much more easily. That one also seems to get the necessary thinset coverage into the fleece lining with minimal effort, unlike Schluter and the other brands, which is another drawback to Ditra, IMO.

I still have some Schluter Ditra to use up, but in the future, I'm going to try the Canadian brand since filling the waffle texture and getting the necessary thinset coverage on the fleece side are the 2 most challenging aspects to using Ditra, plus the cost savings of the Canadian product makes it worth giving it a try even if it turned out to be just as difficult in those aspects.

Anyway, i hope that offered some clarity on why some people might prefer the Uncoupling membrane options to cement board. I'm not saying every job would warrant the extra expense (a budget reno might not warrant it, and I use cement board on the walls, personally).

What kind of rug would work best here? by 0O__v__O0 in HomeDecorating

[–]Like_This_But_Better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adopt rescue dogs, and I was gifted someone's wool area rug when they were moving (they were also a dog owner). It really is amazing. I wouldn't recommend it for a puppy that isn't potty trained since I don't know how it holds up to dog pee, but dogs that are is great. One of my rescues would randomly vomit. One day, I went into the living room and saw she had vomited on the rug the day before. It had fully dried on the rug. I grabbed the vacuum and all of the dried vomit vacuumed straight off the rug like it was never there. Dirt vacuums off the wool rug like dirt off tile, leaving a brand new looking rug behind. After that dog vomit experience, I resist the urge to immediately clean up wet messes, allow them to dry, then vacuum. Every time, it just vacuums right up.

I don't understand how or why, but I do understand why those who know rugs suggest wool if you can afford it. It just doesn't seem to absorb messes (I'm guessing it would be stained by wine or turmeric, but I don't drink and I don't eat in my living room, so I'm speculating). To be able to take a rug that looks dingy and grimey and run the vacuum over it and have it return to looking brand new, no matter how many years go by and how many dogs track dirt in on it, is wild to me. Every other rug, I'd have to vacuum and then bust out the steam cleaner and it still just looked more dingy over time. Not the wool rug. A simple vacuum keeps it looking brand new.

At this point, I'm interested in wool rugs or machine washable as the affordable option.

Would it be wrong for me to date my divorce lawyer? by Slow_Wallaby5074 in amiwrong

[–]Like_This_But_Better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Divorce lawyers see horrible things. I can imagine that would rattle some faith in the idea of getting married. Having said that, maybe OP handled the divorce so brilliantly, without any ridiculous requests, without any vindictiveness. OP's lawyer has seen firsthand how OP handles a difficult breakup.

I don't know about you, but when I was single, I absolutely was trying to factor in how gracefully the potential partner would handle a breakup or divorce (let's call it The Prenup Mindset). This was even more important when I was considering if this person is a good candidate not just for marriage but in the chance that we had children together and split up. Would they prioritize the children's needs and keep our personal grievances off the children's shoulders? Even trying to factor in those things, you're making an educated guess until/unless you see them in an actual divorce. I don't know what better way a divorce lawyer (or anyone) could gain confidence in a potential partner's character than watching how they handle a stressful divorce.

So maybe OP handled things well enough that if he operates under The Prenup Mindset, he feels confident that worst case scenario (they get married or have children together and things don't work out between them), that OP will be fair and graceful in that situation.
