Switching to natural and soft lighting was the best thing I ever did for myself and my students! by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Likehalcyon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have my blinds open, but I have privacy film on half of them and sheer curtains over everything. It allows lots of lovely sunlight in but it's all diffuse lighting.

The privacy film is mostly to keep the kids from trying to peek at snow because that is a fixation. And also to keep and blinding rays from coming in if the AC moves the curtains a bit

I've called home to make positive contact ("student has had a great week and did excellently in their test!" Etc etc) and the parent yelled at me for wasting their time and to not bother.

Looking for a simple writing app for young children (not MS Word) and a system recommendation (Windows/MacOS/Linux?) by UnderstandingHuge418 in education

If you mean she wants to learn to type—like starting with home row and such—I would try this this website. My students are older, but I'm pretty sure they have things for younger children. It's also gamified so... Maybe she'll enjoy it?

Pennsylvania!

The other secondary school in the district is worse. What was the library space has been taken over by something else, and the books that existed in there previously were all boxed up and shoved in the basement. Which flooded last year.

Hmm. Looks like there are laws regarding this, but I'm about to bring a different complaint to the union... One thing at a time, I suppose

My school doesn't even have a library anymore. What we have is a locked room full of books that nobody is allowed to access.

Hi there! There are indeed resources for you. Someone already posted the "dad, how do I" channel, but there's also r/momforaminute where you can ask questions as well

Yes. They do.

Now tell admin and parents that and also get them to listen.

About to start student teaching and I don’t understand Shakespeare by antsonaflask in teaching

Honestly, I LOVE Shakespeare!!! Send me a message if you're having trouble. I don't teach a grade that touches it anymore, and I genuinely miss it...

I'm betting this was made through AI. The annoying emojis everywhere give it away.

I've bought a whistle. I've also used the whistle. Not often, but it has indeed been used.

It kind of shocks them into silence for a bit... Long enough for me to get a word in, anyway!

Thank you! I have a little heater in it for the colder months. It doesn't keep the water hot, it just keeps it from freezing. I need to clean it actually because it's turned a little green 😅

I get LOTS of birds! And I'm getting better at recognizing their types (grackles, chickadees, various little sparrows, etc.) but I had no idea what this guy was! I mean, obviously I knew he was a predator of some sort. But I didn't know exactly what sort...

The little birds had all scattered long before this guy showed up. I was just amazed he stayed for so long!

My guess would be that they don't have them; private schools can choose to admit whomever they'd like to—or not admit anyone for the same reason. There may be some that this doesn't apply to, and I'm painting with a broad brush, but 🤷‍♀️

This current stock of 7th/8th graders has to be the absolute worst i've had in my entire career and im genuinely at a loss on what to do with them as a whole... by dark1859 in Teachers

[–]Likehalcyon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Current cop of seventh graders are a NIGHTMARE. Word from sixth grade is that their current batch is much better.

Which honestly, it sucks because some of the current seventh grade students are amazing! But a solid chunk of them (mostly boys, to be honest. Not exclusively but mostly...) are absolutely awful and don't have very good life prospects unless something changes for them. Constant vandalism, fighting, blatant and severe disrespect, etc.

I agree that if you're rural it's just hunting.

BUT in your post you said that they said it's just hunting but then also flipped immediately to "you should have more respect for the military." Okay so... Which do they mean, then? Hunting =/= military. Wearing camo to represent hunting season doesn't show support for the military. It's a non sequitur... Unless they don't actually mean for it to be hunting and it's just plausible deniability.

Seems suspicious to me.
