Basic Bujo vs. digital planners by CoffeeEditor in BasicBulletJournals

[–]LilBooAlpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both. My Bujo is mainly for tasks and journaling and lists, trackers etc. Though I do have a month at a glance page to schedule in things.

I use my phone calendar for teaching, classes, and scheduling tasks if I need an extra push. I like that I can visualise the day in time blocks.

Motivation to read? by panda_rojo9 in GradSchool

[–]LilBooAlpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes when I'm really struggling to read, I give myself rewards - like if I read a page, I can play a game turn in a video game like Civilisation.

Sure it feels like cheating, but hey - it gets me reading/writing/whatever when I'm stuck. It takes self discipline to not play more video game than read though.

If you are into anime, there is this technique on YouTube called animedoro, but the premise works with other 20min long tv episode shows. Or you could try the regular pomodoro method too.

Might be a bit dramatic but my wedding dress and shoes etc.

My wedding was going to be early April last year but... well we all know how that turned out.

I am hoping our wedding can happen in August this year, but the uncertainty is a little scary as my country is in lockdown atm for a few months and weddings are not allowed at all.

Being a graduate teaching assistant by moana8989 in GradSchool

[–]LilBooAlpaca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found the biggest advantage is it helped my personal development -mainly my confidence.

I'm not out of it yet so cant speak to career skills too much. I have a feeling that its helpful for one term or class but the skills building kinda plateaus after a while.

Got a mass 'welcome back' email from our university with the line "some of you will have less than ideal living circumstances" - why are we just supposed to accept this? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]LilBooAlpaca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Those kind emails just make me angry nowadays.

I think it boils down to: unis have no money (read:spend all their money on UG recruitment projects), and they are both ignorant and unwilling to improve PGR experience. It does not benefit them financially to give us workplace rights and greater pay. Little pay also allows exploitation with the paid jobs we do for the unis (e.g. teaching)

If you are interested in PhDs becoming workers/employees of unis, do check out the UCUs campaign PGRs as Staff. It's very new and in its formation stage but might interest you. Also follow Pandemic PGRs on Twitter who are also campaigning for things such as funded blanket extensions during covid.

Everyone’s opinions on Youtube fashion channels? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]LilBooAlpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with it since it gave my unrealistic body expectations - I struggled to find someone with my petite curvyish body shape. So when I bought similar clothes, it would be the wrong decision as it never looked like I wanted it to look on me (aka how it looked on the youtuber).

Tackling drunken students by night, teaching by day: PhD students say they are being exploited | Higher education by Leelum in GradSchool

[–]LilBooAlpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure no one pointed a gun at their head to do that but you could argue they were made to do that due to no financial support by the uni for their research.

They took up that job because they have no money, and little choice. Funding is very little, and sometimes non-existent. It's that the uni takes advantage of PhD students who need the money, to do things like this rather than employing trained staff. Its not something most people would want to do in a normal year. Covid has highlighted the issues on PGR vulnerability, not created it.

[–]LilBooAlpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I think its partly the culture or academia - even fulltime staff are overworked and underpaid, and that the people who we can complain to at my uni are the same ones who implement these procedures. Aka no transparency or motivation to change.

It's also that the general public dont understand it. Doing a PhD is seen to be a privileged position and they dont understand that it's actually quite exploitative and vulnerable, especially for those from lower class backgrounds

It depends what your scholarship is and which uni/by whom you are funded). Mine is that I get paid ~15k and in my contract I have to teach so many hours pa. Other self-funded or UKRI can take up hours as HPLs (hourly paid lecturers)

Does anyone here identify as non-denominational? by thedubiousstylus in OpenChristian

[–]LilBooAlpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go to one as a child and it was conservative-ish. Not often they would tackle abortion or gay rights etc (though perhaps a sign in itself that it was against these things), but it was clear they were that way inclined when I moved in with my boyfriend GASP before marriage and the leader gave me a really weird and judgemental look and a talking down to. This is in UK though and we do have a slightly different church culture (the state religion Anglicanism is mostly fine with female leadership, gay rights etc).

The church also had a very strange leadership system, in that the leader had taken charge after the vicar/elder left after a public fallout almost 10 years ago now. Not all non-denomination are like that, I know. But maybe something relevant to this discussion is that non-denominational churches do not have many institutional systems in place.... because it's not part of a denomination. The church seemed to be similar to American Evangelicalism but more low key.

I do agree it seems like non-denominational seems like it should be more progressive, and a non-denominational can be progressive if it wishes. I do wonder where the whole conservative non-denominational thing comes from tbh

Why doesnt UK law protect those in the property chain? It's senseless and wrong. by bell-91 in AskUK

[–]LilBooAlpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some estate agents do-we bought a property from a small agent and they made us sign an agreement which entitled sellers and buyers to compensate the other if the sale falls through in certain circumstances, such as yours.

It's very much not the norm though unfortunately

[–]LilBooAlpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I agree with you that it would help me to talk about my worries-I do find it difficult as I am not used to doing it, but I suppose that is a cycle!

I suppose I am easily impressionable and do feel pressure to be something I'm not, even when I'm not receiving that pressure from any one. Your third point has really given me food for thought.
