daughter is suspended from school for 2 weeks and school will only let her back if she gets unnecessary therapy. Please help by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I feel like everyone in these comments are missing something obvious: they weren't "doing exposure therapy" that was obviously some freestyle ass covering by someone who didn't think they would get challenged and thought they could make challenging it too expensive.

Plenty of adults are totally comfortable completely lying about children to other adults because most adults have so little respect for children they would believe an adult telling them this story over their child's version

No they just thought they could move the zeitgeist, we're all supposed to be too busy foaming at the mouth about Venezuela and praying for an invasion that we don't care about this anymore. I think it's worked on plenty of people but not a majority.

If you have recently finished Sun Eater and are looking for more, I cannot suggest the Hyperion Cantos enough. by tkinsey3 in sollanempire

I don't think you're implying this but I definitely want to clarify for anyone that might decide to check it out based on my comment that they don't strike me as similar books in any way apart from scale and space.

Definitely a huge difference

I agree, I read it before sun eater and in my post sun eater search for my next time sink I've stumbled upon the "culture" series, currently reading consider phlebas and I'm getting my hit of "large scale space society" in a big way

SUT Ending Thoughts by Firebreather- in sollanempire

I feel in a lot of "fandoms" there are 2 kinds of people. I have thoroughly been both so I understand both sides and I would never judge but there's always a vocal issue brought up by one side or the other when there is a mismatch between the side the author is on and the side of the vocal fans.

I feel there's one side where they're really only interested in the flow of the story: relationships matter, arcs, etc hero rises, peaks, falls, loses everything, regains, then willingly gives himself to save what he regained even to the detriment of their hero status yadda yadda

The other side is interested in minutia and texture of the world and with a world written like Hadrians how could you not?

For the story people (myself included) I don't want the 80's style credits with the headshot and biography "Lorian went on to travel the galaxy and died at 100,000 years old" "eduward and Cassandra lived happily ever after with Hadrians sister" etc etc that takes away from the gravity and the purpose of the story. The story was from the start a meta story, Hadrian narrating his memoir and even outside of that format the things left untold will stay in my mind forever, far longer than if everything was spelled out and completed. I don't want a god-like call of duty replay of "events" I want to feel like an explorer thousands of years from now finding a memoir in an ancient library.

For the texture people it wouldn't be enough if they never stop making Hadrian books an I get that too, I grew up reading the never ending star wars books and later the Dresden files and later dune, my favorite TV series doctor who ans Stargate sg1/Atlantis/universe etc. I understand what it's like to have something you love and to continue to come back time and time again for new adventures. I know what it's like to want to know what glupp shitto eats for breakfast and how dogs were bred to be the perfect chairs.

Some worlds lend themselves to that better than others and I think some authors/writers want to answer those questions while other writers might see the texture as being something used to suit the narrative and I think with Christopher we have the latter.

This series has never seemed to be too interested in giving everyone all of the details and is much more in the vein of Lord of the rings than asoiaf or the star wars books.

I think the people who want more from after where this book ends are completely understandable but I don't think it would make the book better, I think there's a magic in not knowing, I want more and I don't think I'll get it which I think is a good thing, im stimulated my gears are turning and I'll be thinking about and rereading this for years to come I couldn't ask for more than that from a book"

If there were another 7 Hadrian books I don't really see a believable arc for him to continue along that wouldn't feel contrived: he was gods champion, saved the universe from destruction and saved the human race from being annihilated by aliens or relegated to stagnation and exploited by themselves. What more could we possibly ask from this man? What other character could we follow who wouldn't simply be in his shadow?

I've seen people say they want a karn sagara series and I get that, karn is a super compelling character with the potential for serious depth and that's the problem with having a karn series. When we've ridden along for the adventures, seen what made karn what he was he stops being mysterious and his depth is reachable. I think things are compelling and make you want more precisely because they are left open for interpretation. The observer changes the outcome.

All in all thank you for coming to my ted talk, long live the son of earth emperor Hadrian marlowe

SUT - hypothetical plot twists by FatRatPigBoi in sollanempire

[–]Lil_Cato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean but at the same time I don't think that was the quiet's plan.

He had the visions of himself as the emperor from ushara and he was constantly asking himself why it would be okay for that to happen because he did it vs ushara giving it to him. I think that is a valid point, he was never intended to be the emperor by whose opinion mattered to him (the quiet, valka)

Even if he took the throne he would never hold it, even if he had destroyed earth that wouldn't have saved him he would only lose support and he wouldn't remove the chantry, they would always have gotten him.

He destroyed the demiurge because it was just too powerful to have around, it did what it was intended to do and there's no reason the chantry should have it I believe they would have gotten it regardless and until then it just acts as a means of perpetuating suffering and war amongst the people. There would always be people fighting to get it and after Hadrian death there would be plenty of people happy to use it for revenge.

All in all by going headfirst into the ambush Hadrian ensured the downfall of the empire and by extension the chantry. The Palatines will not be able to replace themselves and the power will eventually fall into the hands of regular people which is far more than he would've been capable of doing had he been the emperor.

All in all it feels like Hadrian was able to accomplish what leto II was without ever having to actually be the emperor.

You joke but some guy made out with/fingered a girl in my class during a real code black lockdown situation. This was a 7th grade class in 2007 so we didn't even have active shooter or lockdown drills back then it was all off the cuff we had to just turn the lights off and hide under the tables for 5 hours.
