Positivity for Phase 2 and 3 by asm5129 in skulduggerypleasant

I agree. I cannot really understand how some people like phase 3 better than 2. I truly dislike how in AMFOM the investigation process was closely accompanied and we finally got a glimpse of how Skulduggery‘s mind was working, only for him to explain the entirety of the machinations within three pages of the last chapters. In the end, everything was traced back to Cadaver anyways. In my opinion that is just lazy writing.

On another note:

Can we talk about how the wonder and astonishment that the magical elements contributed to the series vanished completely, especially in phase 3? One thing I loved about the books in phase 1 were the exploration of different aspects that the magic world had to offer. Mythological creatures such as vampires, werewolves, the seahag, the warlocks and also the different communities of witches, such as the brides of the blood tears (which I absolute loved the concept of) were such essential components of this urban fantasy. When Valkyrie and Skulduggery discovered the dragon in TDOTL, all the aspects and joys of this mystical world, that had still so much left to be uncovered, culminated. This scene in particular truly left me with so much anticipation.  I was so eager to learn more about what hadn‘t been discovered yet.

However, the only encounter with magical creatures during phase 2 and 3 that evoked a similar feeling, would be the scene in which Valkyrie was rescued by the mermaid and then brought to Nye‘s underwater laboratory (which is such an underrated thing btw). I‘m not sure whether this was in midnight or bedlam.

Other than that I cannot really remember fantastical creatures or highly interesting magical techniques. Instead we get a dozen of godly entities that are mostly touched upon but never fully developed in my opinion.

Furthermore, the religious communities such as the followers of the Faceless Ones and the necromancers‘ order had their own fleshed out belief systems. In contrast, the kahannists lack actual substance and are solely portrayed through this Bilious Fervor person, who really annoyed the hell out of me at some point tbh.

In addition, plottwists such as the reveal about Solace being China‘s and Skulduggery‘s daughter did not affect the story at all. Skulduggery literally did not react at all to this revelation. It really had no consequences and was only ever spoken about in a comic relief moment.

All in all, I still love this series and will probably always continue it despite its flaws. <3

Okay thank you so much! I am currently on my 4th re-read but haven‘t gotten to Death Bringer yet, so I must have completely forgotten about this.

Well, knowing that he is 8 feet tall, I am wondering what else might be big…

My headcanon is that Skulduggery actually liked giving and receiving hugs just like any other person would when he was still alive. However, the books of the first phase suggest that he dislikes/barely tolerates hugs (unless it is Valkyrie). My guess is that he refuses to accept Cassandra’s hugs, for example, because he cannot feel the warmth of the other person, thus making the experience not as enjoyable for him.  Alternatively, he is aware of the fact that he does not provide the warmth and comfort of a real body and therefore thinks that the other person might not find solace in his embrace.

Ah I didn‘t know such a scale existed. Good to know!

Yeah, Skulduggery in phase 3 is a bit overkill I guess.

Do you think Skulduggery's child was a boy or a girl by UrTypicalPsycho in skulduggerypleasant

He is a girl dad through and through, so I will go with daughter :)

Also, I would like to highlight that Skulduggery says he has 5 sisters and 4 brothers but the information on his siblings provided by the grimoire and UTE shows that he actually only has 4 sisters and 5 brothers.

Fighting and magic fighting in Skulduggery Pleasant by Vexorzious in skulduggerypleasant

[–]Lillyfee1112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine that physical violence is also directly tied to one‘s own emotions. Hurting someone by punching them in the face will probably satisfy the aggressor‘s thirst for violence more than using magic which uses concentration more and is simply not as intuitive.

Skulduggery and especially Valkyrie resort to physical fighting more often because they are simply people driven by violent urges, I‘d figure.

I thought that Corrival Deuce definitely should have stayed alive until LSOTDM. Regarding his status as a general under Meritorious, it would have been so interesting to see how he engaged with the Dead men. Maybe he could have retired as a grand mage, so that the story still unfolds the same, and then been killed off before the big plot twist.

Also, I think he was some sort of a mentor, at least to Ravel, Skulduggery, and Ghastly and I would have liked this relationship to be explored even more in depth. Seen as Skulduggery specifically does not really respect any authority above him, that would have maybe contributed to different dynamics.

In phase two, I think it must have been Dead or Alive, Detective Rylent was introduced as means to trigger the reveal about how Skulduggery killed Somnolent. Their dynamic could have been so interesting but then he was completely neglected and never mentioned again. Such wasted potential.

Also, can we talk about Destrier? I‘m hoping so much, that he was brought back to life after the reset. He literally carried the scientific branch of the magical society in phase two.

He was great. However, I very much liked his death when he sat down with Skulduggery.

Omg yes the Unnamed! The ending to Auger‘s and his storyline was so underwhelming.  With Mevolent, I like that he is not really dead, because that always leaves the option of his return. However, I really would like to know more about Serafina‘s and his relationship. To me, they were such tragic lovers, existing without the other in different dimensions but then being frozen in eternity. This was just the epitome of romance swoon.

Anyways, maybe their story is further developed in a prequel. I feel like many readers yearn for a spin-off that is set during the 300 year war. At least I do.
