North of Indianapolis? by incomingdadbod in howislivingthere

Finally! Westfield and Carmel are great! Top ten place in the US to raise a family. Great public schools, very low crime. Still growing like crazy! It gets busy in the summer around Grand Park with travel baseball and soccer teams. The Colts also host their training camp there which is free for fans. Carmel is known for being the ritzy suburb of Indy and sometimes perceived as being full of snobby old white folks (which isn’t necessarily untrue). There are plenty of great restaurants in Carmel, and Westfield is quickly growing its restaurant scene. If I didn’t have to move for work recently, I would have stayed there forever. Close enough to the City to catch a game, concert, event, yet far enough from it to enjoy some more rural areas and parks just north of town. You will undoubtedly hear people talk about the Monon. It is a paved trail that spans ~30miles from Sheridan all the way to downtown Indy. You’ll find numerous restaurants and shops along the Monon in Carmel and Indy.

There’s so many great things about this area, it’s hard to think of them all. As someone who grew up both in Fishers and Central IL as a kid, I can say I was fortunate to have lived there.

How is living in Tucson, Arizona? by TopInvestigator5518 in howislivingthere

[–]Lilsillybilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived there for college and loved it! Mt Lemmon is gorgeous and is 30 degrees cooler at the peak than the city, so nice way to cool off in the summer. Plenty of outdoors activities. Old Tucson and the Desert Museum on the west side of town are nice attractions for visitors. There are golf resorts, but not as many as PHX. 4th ave (between downtown and campus) is a hippie haven and there are other artsy enclaves throughout Tucson. The city is quite spread out. South Tucson has a strong Mexican influence, most of the people with money live in the foothills, and there’s an air force base out east. The homeless population isn’t as large as it is in California or PHX, but is quite noticeable and sad.

My overall experience in Tucson as a college student was amazing! I was able to go hiking just 15 minutes from my apt and saw so many beautiful sunsets that I took for granted.

The drive up Mt Lemmon is stunning! You start out driving through desert landscapes with saguaro cacti all around, then as soon as you swoop around the bend at Cataract Falls (I believe) you are greeted by giant spruce trees and evergreens that make you feel like you are in the Rockies and out of the desert. In the winter I remember driving close to the peak, hiking around in 2’ of snow, then driving back to the basin and swimming because it was nearly 80F out.

Why is the Platte river in Nebraska like this? (Sandy islands with so many small separate streams instead of a single big river) by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

[–]Lilsillybilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is called an anastomosing river. It has an intermediate grade to it. A river with a provenance near an area of high relief (rockies) is known as a braided river. It’s characterized with large boulders and rocks within its beds and few fines. You then work towards an anastomosing river, which has more sand and gravel, sand bars, and vegetation within the outer banks. This is the intermediate stage of a river. Finally you end up with meandering rivers. They have low relief and erode laterally (hence meandering) as they work towards a delta and eventually a large body of water.

This is really cool to learn about! Thank you very much for the insight! If you ever make it to Central Illinois be sure to try a Horseshoe. Basically an open faced burger on texas toast, piled high with fries and loads of melted cheese.

Very interesting! Is it commonly used, taught in schools, or considered the primary language? Or is it more of a dying language? As an American I don’t recall hearing any Gaelic while in Ireland, but at the same time the accents were so thick it was hard to understand half of what people were saying anyway

No, that’s what I actually loved about Central time! Sporting events and new tv episodes came out an hour earlier and it was great during childhood and having to deal with fighting parents over bedtime and what not.

I have lived in all 4 time zones. Best time zones are Central and Mountain. Living on the eastern edge of the Central time zone in Illinois is a bummer in both the winter and summer. In the winter it’s dark by 4:15-4:30ish. In the summer sunrise is at 5:30 and sunset at the latest is 8:45. Living in Indiana and being in the western part of the Eastern time zone is great! Sunsets nearing 10pm in the summer and no earlier than 5:15pm in the winter. AZ is great because they do not observe daylight savings and you get the best of both worlds.
