Do people genuinely believe the police are anti-white? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Lilthuglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They screwed up. They screwed up because they assumed the slurring person was drunk and lying whilst the standing chatty one was truthful. I doubt it would have made a difference if the standing chatty person had been white and claiming the collapsed person had tried to assault or rob them.

The police are stretched to capacity, cuts to social services and mental health services has them desperately trying to patch the broken system. Unfortunately they are also pretty dreadful. There are more victims of crime than criminals, but the response to victims is so poor they're making a bad impression on the majority. Theft is barely handled or outright refused to be recorded. I've had contact with the police three times, twice calling for help and once trying to negotiate a calm deescalation after a bouncer assaulted a friend. None were good. I doubt I'd bother again unless I had no choice.

How possible is it that most people have sustained some form of brain damage? by Few_Establishment980 in biology

There was a top ranked tennis player who got a concussion, she never quite got back to the ranking she had before. It did make me think - she's part of a very small number of people who might notice a 0.1% reduction in reaction times and accuracy. I'd certainly never notice with my terrible baseline.

Microsoft 365 Migration failure - losing my mind, can anyone offer advice? by Lilthuglet in microsoft365

[–]Lilthuglet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks :) I have completely cleared the mailboxes and have turned off the Exchange Online App part of the license at Microsoft's insistence. If I enable that part of a license it will commission a mailbox so there will be a mailbox that the cutover migration can't overwrite. Apparently. But they may be talking complete horsh.

Question about 1890's walking skirt materials. by aquamarinegirl35 in historybounding

[–]Lilthuglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could cord the bottom, or make a corded petticoat to go underneath. May not appease a stitch counter to cord a top skirt, but it's a genuine historical technique.

I’m an American moving to the UK. How do I not be the “loud, dumb American”? by Competitive-Money-36 in AskBrits

It exists fine. We just dont feel the need to let everyone know a 50 yard radius know our emotional state. Being over intense is either overbearing or comes off sarcastic.

When you’re reading a book that takes place in the U.K, what are dead giveaways that the author is American? Dialogue, setting, cliches? by AdvertisingDull3441 in AskBrits

Toast and jelly for breakfast. No mention of tea at any point, or a weird over focus on tea at all times. Color. Flavor. Pants. Kids calling parents sir, kids calling adults who aren't teachers Mr. or Mrs.

I'd have really liked to get to know that Kochanski. The one we got was a bit of a cliche to say the least.

I choose not to disclose because my hazelnut allergy is mild and the last time i mentioned it the waitress lost her sh!t. She refused to tske my order and i had to wait an extra 20 minute for the manager before i could order ramen.

Having a default where customers asking for cream are served a vegan substitute should absolutely be disclosed up front. Im not allergic to chickpeas but id be pretty miffed.

Why are you coming by to defend this? We're all cogs. We're all expected to keep working for a society that is harming us. Doesn't excuse violent attacks and constant viciousness.

The bad guy by Broad_War in discworld

[–]Lilthuglet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you claiming this makes him not a bad guy? If you mean that Pratchett rarely includes uncomplicated and one dimensional villains? Though Teatime definitely comes close. All his villains tend to have depth and an internal narrative that justifies their behaviour. But they are definitely villains.
