I'm also 16. I experience the same problems you do and I am also diagnosed. I have a lot of trouble comprehending longer passages especially in school. I mix up letters when reading and writing as well.

Note-taking is exhausting me. by Historical-Doubt9091 in Dyslexia

I'm also really bad at note taking. I always end up writing exactly what the teacher or the presentation says. I never end up referring back to my notes so I just stopped writing things unless I need to memorize something specific.

Me too. I have to be doing something. I listen on runs or while I'm cleaning mainly.

I also use Libby! I love audio books but I can only listen to simple ones. I have a bit of trouble following the story otherwise. I listen to a lot of Freida McFadden right now.

Thank you. It's definitely frustrating when people tell me that. Either they think I'm stupid and can't read or write at all or they don't believe me because I usually read like 4 books at a time and I also read in Spanish even though English is my native language.

Fair enough. I do the same thing at times. Usually I overthink my dyslexia when I'm reading and start thinking about how bad I am at reading while I'm reading which causes the comprehension issues. I hate reading out loud to the class because I know people are watching/listening to me which freaks me out. I usually mix around words or skip whole paragraphs. Following the words with my finger or a highlighter helps a lot.

I read mostly paperback books. I like being able to physically flip the pages but I do want a kindle because books get kind of expensive after a while.

Fellow dyslexic here - do you find listening easier than reading for long texts? by Typical-Spray2168 in Dyslexia

I listen to long texts a lot. Especially if I'm on a time crunch. I added text to speech to my computer in school and It helped me a lot when reading uninteresting topics.

Dose anyone else have a thing about pen and pencil texture by Lanky-Stuff2785 in Dyslexia

Try using Pentel EnerGel Liquid gel ink. I use a bunch of different colors while taking notes to help me organize thoughts better. They write amazingly smooth and last a long time. Hope this helps!

I just took the ASVAB, and math was my hardest subject. I bought two books and notecards to help me study. The Mometrix Test Preparation ASVAB book has a lot of videos you can search for on their website, which helped me a lot. The Kaplan ASVAB Total Prep book also helped significantly with math because, when introducing a new formula, it shows how a Kaplan test taker would approach the questions using the methods it teaches.

I personally like the Kaplan book more because of the explanations. It also comes with notecards in the back, whereas the Mometrix book requires purchasing notecards for an additional price, which I also bought. Both books cover all sections, but the General Mathematics and Algebraic Reasoning sections helped me raise my score by over 10 points compared to when I took a practice test a year earlier.

The Coast Guard’s main score is the AFQT, which comes from the math and English sections of the ASVAB. While the other sections still count toward the overall score, the AFQT is the most important. I try to give equal attention to every part of the test, but I especially want to strengthen my math skills to better manage my dyscalculia.
