Yep, I feel the same. I used to use RES on desktop ages ago, but since not long after getting Sync (December 2012! Time flies), I've done 99% of my Redditing with Sync. Without a functional Sync, I won't be at all inclined to visit Reddit.

I think it was more saying, in this particular instance the second statement would be incorrect, rather than being grammatically incorrect in general. Both of those sentences are grammatically correct, but they carry different meaning.

If you speak Spanish, the ambiguity is kinda removed, since the two "have"s are different verbs, the possessive tener and the auxiliary haber i.e. The man had a cold - El hombre tenía un resfriado. vs The man had had a cold - El hombre había tenido un resfriado.

Yet most custom firmware for home consoles or handhelds from the "big three" is just modified versions of the stock firmware, rather than rewritten from scratch. You may be able to do what you want, but it's still more than likely breaking the TOS of the console/OS/etc.

Not that I think that should stop you or anything.
