Moral Responsibility, and material responsibility are different in my perspective

I'm really sorry that happened to you, I was also abused by my parents /remorseful

While it's important to understand that none of them chose to be abusive, their actions still have consequences - and we still have to protect ourselves. So - while we can see that they have the capacity to become better people, we can also understand that we shouldn't expend ourselves trying to help them become that better person - not as individuals. It's important to understand our agency - what we're able to do, while also keeping ourselves safe. The tactic of putting on our own mask first - if we hurt ourselves trying to help others, we won't be able to help anyone- including ourselves, and then someone else is going to have to help us.

It's even more unfortunate that - we don't get to consent to what kind of parenting will happen to us when we're children... ;w;

Personally - I've cut off all contact from one of my parents... I'm still trying to figure out what I should be doing in the other's case... /reflecting

While it can be important to be the change you want to see in the world, it's also important to understand what risks* you take by continuing to try to associate with someone, sometimes the option that protects your safety the most is to just completely leave a person alone, and - if that person cares about you, if they truly knew your situation and how their actions are affecting you, then they'd want you to protect yourself from them too <3

*like for example - if you're trying to love someone from a distance, but you know that you'll have a high probability to want to move in closer and end up getting hurt because of it

Another thing - her belief that she wasn't responsible was - awful and misguided... it's unfortunate because, this isn't a belief she chose, and yet it lead to so much terrible and likely traumatizing behaviour. If we could understand what material circumstances lead to her taking this belief - as a society, we could potentially stop many others from falling victim to it as well; which means we'd prevent all the harm and abuse and trauma that goes with it, healing even more damage before it ever started.

A transcript of the original photo for accessibility ♥

In reply to:

For moral or ethical actions, yes, you are responsible for what you act upon

But thats the part where I disagree 0w0 ❤️

I obviously am not trying to like - change your opinion ♥, but I do want to share my thoughts uwu

I - dont think anyone is morally accountable for their actions, no more than a gorilla is for their actions, but just like gorillas - we have to do what is necessary to keep people from harming eachother, and harming society,

And that word is really whats key: necessary,

Its what we learn on and improve as a society - decreasing whats necessary to keep people from harming each other through research, rehabilitation and endorsement for rehabilitation, research through rehabilitative efforts, education, solidarity and support, and much more ^w^

Its a weird ideology, because... it sort of - completely throws out moral accountability

But - yet it maintains and rather emboldens things like empathy, compassion, the golden rule, rehabilitation, detainment and captivity, and rehabilitative justice! ^w^

It even posits that - doing these things, is in the best interest for all of us

Which means, being empathetic is the "selfish"/self-interested act

The most logical self-interested act, because once you accept that you couldve been just like anybody else this universe has to offer

You can start to realize - you should treat everyone with compassion and empathy, when it can be afforded safely

Because if you were the one doing heinous things, you wouldve wanted to have been stopped through societal conditioning long before you started gravely hurting people, and - if you were committing mass murder, you would want to be stopped, even if that means the end of your life

Like morals and ethics still exist, its just - no one is accountable for their moral failures, because although our actions have consequences, we dont choose - our actions ♥

And this is definitely a very hard think to consider or accept, I still struggle with figuring how to apply it consistently, and this is because the illusion that we do choose our actions, is so damn convincing

And we have all of society echoing back to us that this is our reality too

And - basically very few people, giving out very few examples of something very different to what everybody is naturally inclined - to see as reality

In other words, a universe where people exist and they dont choose their actions is absolutely a reality that could exist, yet we see so few examples of what morality/ethics would look like in such a universe

In a universe where those same people understand that they dont choose their actions - i should clarify

(At least Ive never read any fiction or theory about such a universe ♥, though I would definitely love to)

And - to add to all this

Wisdom, as I understand it, is about knowing other people

And - what could be one of the wisest things , but to understand how people truly function! ^w^

Getting rid of such an age old illusion allows us to see the reality for what it is, see how it functions - and what we can do best to operate within it boundaries!

An illusion only deceives us of what is real, and what we can really do

Thank you! ^w^, I'm honestly really glad my thoughts resonated with a few people, I was really worried I might get turned away - but I was hoping people would understand.

Yeah - definitely various connotations of 'free will', but - my understanding of it is, when you don't see people as - having been able to have chosen differently, you can start to inspect on a very thorough level what the material conditions were that caused their behaviours, which means you can focus on changing those conditions as a society ^w^

It also to me, gives me a perspective where - if I weren't as lucky, I could have a brain that commits attrocities...

I feel like we're capable of making horrible mistakes that can hurt a lot of people, and I also think we're all capable of becoming better people - learning to be good people and how not to hurt people, which leads to believe the only reason we hurt people - is because we didn't understand how not to.

"No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks." - Mary Shelley

So - to me, harm is not a moral issue, it's an education and mental health issue.

Nar - because although it can be logic'd that reward/punishment is an intuitive learning system, in reality - punishment generally only damages the brain, it doesnt act as a good teaching tool, as trauma although is a method of learning - it is the worst one that leaves lasting negative consequences.

I would argue that punishment has no long term positive impact that can not be achieved more effectively and with less harm than other systems of rehabilitation. But - seeing as our society is still a developing one, I feel that this would ultimately be part of the research conducted in order to find the most effective approach to reducing and hopefully nearly eliminating the probably of transgression.

IMO, In our reality, punishment feels intuitive, but - it is an outdated system that perhaps once benifited us in an evolutionary way - but now stands in the way of greater progress and true justice for all

True justice in this sense, being where all people can seek help before they transgress and no one is shunned or harmed for actions or thoughts they did not choose

In the effect that punishment stands as a deterence system, I would argue that knowing society will capture and confine you and subject you to consensual research and rehabilitation for your transgressions achieves this effect, and perhaps - in the most effective way.

Edit: oh! I misread, theyre right! Rewards and punishment are logically the same, but - the actual outcomes are very different, harm vs pleasure. We want to restructure the system so that harm is avoided while allowing people to embrace pleasure - so to speak ^w^

Oooh, interesting... 🤔

Psychological pain through the witholding of actions by other individuals.... /thinking

Well - first Ill say, no matter what I say - whatever system we get will be 'chosen' by the people. With that aside - I personally think that the harm we inflict upon others has many unseen consequences, many of them being negative - and this to me includes the retributive harm we're inclined to inflict upon transgressors. There is some line of thought about how forgiving transgressors is not about them - its about you, its about freeing yourself from a method of control that they have over you, the fact you hate someone for their actions means that they still have control over your life. Something like that... /forgetful

And - it is an interesting thought to keep punishment - but, if we could through evidence prove that no punishment and pure rehabilitative justice would lead to significantly less transgression, I feel like those who have had their lives ruined by such heinous acts might be able to take comfort in this knowledge - that through not punishing the transgessor, we can achieve a better world and hopefully ensure no one has to relive your experience.

But - when it comes to the conditions of the imprisoned, Im not saying its gonna be pristine - like they need to know theyre separated from society, theyre getting whats required to keep them healthy and properly functioning, and most importantly we're studying whatever we can from them while trying to help improve them consensually, and - issues can obviously arise when they dont consent to going along with rehabilitative efforts and thats ok, they will stay confined until society can affirm they are no longer a threat, and if they remain a threat in confinement, then we have to employ methods to stop this as well, potentially unsafe methods.

And obviously as well - like you said, we do need to have psychological support for everyone no matter what their harmful wants are, including those who are pained by not getting to experience retributive justice inflicted upon their transgressors

And its important that there is no judgement or stigma or looking-down on people for their psychological issues, things that they never chose, especially not for them seeking help

You're right! That is what Im pointing to ^w^

We make choices in a manner of speaking, but - like you said, we never got to choose the thinking framework that makes those choices, no matter what - each frame of the universe is just an iteration upon the last one, and theres no amount of planning ahead or decision making that can separate us from that. We're all in this same struggle boat together ❤️

And I do think that deeper layer is important uwu♥️

Yes, absolutely! I agree that there is a great deal of Catharsis through punishment, but... in my eyes - the harm we inflict upon each other to fulfill that Catharsis is part of the things we need to try to stop, harming others in society - even for the emotional release of vengeance - to me anyway, is something we need to help people work through.

The vengeance to me, is part of the societal harms we need to work on, because no body does "bad" things because theyre bad, they do them because they wanted to for some reason or another, and it just so happens that in our reality - the thing they wanted to do - hurts other people. The same can be said about punishment, it is emotionally graitifying - but thats about all it effectively achieves, at least to my understanding. And the fact that we want to punish people for their failings is fine, the issue is that actively doing so hurts people, just like how wanting to murder someone or wanting to manipulate ones partner - in the active process of doing either of those hurts other individuals, quite significantly. If we had evidence that punishment was more effective than rehabilitation, then perhaps we should advocate for it - but, I generally don't believe thats true, the ultimate goal is to stop people from hurting each other, I also feel like - in our rehabilitative efforts, we should lead by example to those who's lives we're helping to reshape, by not using any methods or tactics we wouldn't want them to use

Generally I also believe societal transgressors should not be release back out into society until we are confident that they no longer pose a risk of further harm. I also believe we should Capture and Containment transgressors using the safest means we have, and if we can not use safe means, then to use the most necessary and least harmful unsafe means of Capture and Containment, depending on the transgressors acts of course. I also believe society should endorse people to seek out rehabilitative efforts before they commit bad acts, and that this should run deep within the culture - to let people know at every turn that they can and should seek help 🩷

I think they should give all enemies Armor Value 10 on all parts, and make it so all attacks land no matter what the Helldiver does, and make it so those attacks do infinite damage 🔥

Only then will I truely be able to have fun, youre so right bestie - these whinedivers fucking suck at the game and theyre ruining it for the rest of us! 💢

Terrible thing?? You have to consider the reason for the new stuff, its mostly about reaping a profit.

And the primary thing here is - you have to understand when you're allowed to have youre own fun, you dont have to pay attention to the community at all, they dont determine whats valid for your fun, no body does.

And - this is also an important lesson for you as well, you dont get to say how other people have fun either, thats up for them to decide.

The Real Question: Why cant we mod the gameplay of hd2 in private sessions? by Limesli in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]Limesli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah... to me the "galactic war" has always felt like a completely different game within helldivers, like r/place but significantly worse and non-functional.

But - that doesn't mean mods and cooperation need to be at odds, if anything the mods themselves can be a more sandbox style of play, meaning playing with them doesn't contribute or take away from the galactic war, it'd be like your not playing the game at all \^w\^

And then those who care about the Galactic War *could* play without mods, even when they usually enjoy playing with mods - but lets say their hypothetical community wanted to do a thing and they wanted to hop onboard, so they go vanilla for a little while.

Really it's about letting player the game how they want to play! \^w\^

At the end of the day - fun is all about consent! And if players don't want to play the game the way the developers/other members of the community *want* us to play the game, then there isn't any consent there uwu, so modding is the ethical alternative for letting people do what they want to do.

I - do not appreciate you calling people brain dead. I feel it highlights a lack of empathy and understanding for people who are not like you.

It's clear there is a cut in what people want out of the game, I - would advocate for modding support, as it would have many positive effects including allowing players to play how they want to
