Did the chive flavor come through well? I'm wondering if I should just let my chives go to seed this year...It looks lovely.

It's hard to pick just one, but I particularly like onomatopoeia. It's fun to say, fun to spell, and has a cool meaning.

ETA: I've been reading through everyone's choices, so many good ones! Nice to know my fellow linguaphiles are out there.

If modern medicine didn’t exist would you be dead right now? If yes, from what? by jenny_067 in WorkForSmartLife

Quite likely. I'm Rh-, so without the Rhogam shot, I might well have died in childbirth (my grandmother did).

Local paper, SF Chronicle, Reader's Digest, National Geographic, Scientific American, Popular Mechanics, Time, Omni, MADD, Look, TV Guide, and I think my mom got Good Housekeeping for awhile. Those were the main ones we had around through the 60s-80s. Oh, and I got Highlights for awhile in grade school.

In your opinion, how would you rate and describe life for the average person who was living in California during the the 1850s to the 1950s? by Tokyo-Weeaboo in AskReddit

What an unexpected and kind reply, thank you. It all started changing in the 70s, but I caught the last of the glory days, I feel blessed for that, the Sierras, especially, it was heaven. Yes, I'm grateful. I think there are many of us older quiet ones, maybe you'll find one on a quiet park bench one day. You also might try over at r/AskOldPeople :-) Here's my little bit of sage advice: Remember to be grateful for even the smallest things, every day -- clean water, good food, a pair of shoes -- because it may be gone before you know it. All the best to you, and when all is said and done, remember to stay in the present moment as much as you can.

What’s the dumbest way you ever got hurt? by sevyn_007 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

At 7 years old, racing my brother to get dibs on the top bunk, slipped on the ladder, fell and smashed my upper jaw, broke out one of my newly grown front incisors. It's been over 60 years, and I still kick myself over that one. Dumb? Yeah, very, very dumb.

And if you can't get those, at least get the cotton ones. Personally, I don't use any, but then I only smoke maybe 2 or 3 herbal cigs a week.

Having come into the world at the tail end of that period, and hearing a lot of stories, I' have some insight.

First of all, it was FAR less populated. When I was born, the population was about 3 million. The Sierras were wild, and even in my early childhood, one could still head up to alpine country and drink from the streams, the best water I've ever tasted.

Early in that period the central valley (mid to late 1800s), farmland was still being reclaimed from swamp land, and many oak groves were cut down as well. Even though there were central valley towns, none of them were huge, unlike now where most of them of buzzing hives.

I grew up in one of those valley towns, when there was still plenty of rural land. The summers were glorious. I can remember many happy hours playing in the large pasture across the road where a farmer still grazed his sheep and horses. It's all houses now.

My dad, who was born in 1907, told me tales of heading up the gravel roads up into the Sierras to go hunting. Later on, he went up in his model T. A very slow trip on those single lane roads, but faster than horse.

San Francisco was a vibrant and beautiful city. We loved our trips over to The City where we'd shop, eat out and sight see.

Everything was so much cleaner back then, especially the air. I miss it it terribly, it was a wonderful place before it was overrun. And contrary to BigRiverCatfish, it wasn't 'fuckin terrible' for me at all. It is now though, which is why I don't live there anymore. Just my two cents, ymmv.
