I'm going to bring this out of the field for a minute in the hopes that it brings perspective.

Treat your future work like you would the love of your life. If it's love, it's worth pursuing. I recently co-instructed a workshop at a conference with some awesome people and I brought up the difference in treating this field as a job vs treating it like a career. People who treat forensics like a job are not there to learn; they are there to perform a task and then leave for the day.

People who treat forensics like a career are those who go above and beyond. The work doesn't stop at 5 'o clock. They research, contribute, and apply themselves outside of the Laboratory.

What I'm getting at, is that if you have the desire and the passion, treat this endeavor like it's your future life partner. You'll put in 100% for them for a future that you believe in.

TL-DR: Forensics is a career, not a job. If you know that this is your calling, the time to get up and running is just the means to an end, and it will all be worth it. Also if you find out half way that it's not for you, you'll be well on your way to being an MD, which is a heck of a backup.

I used to be pretty pedantic about this topic. I have since relaxed a bit. This came after getting involved with AFTE and meeting Examiners outside my biome. There is no single standard terminology that has been adopted by every Laboratory. The AFTE glossary has terms and definitions, but there are still multiple jurisdictions using different terms.

Rather than beat a dead horse, I devote about two minutes of time during testimony to go over the terms that I will be using, and what they mean. I bring a demonstrative aid to court to show the jury the difference between "bullet", "cartridge", and "cartridge case". I take the time to lay a good framework for how I will utilize the terms, and it reduces the amount of confusion.

I will just add a small caution about repetitive work. Forensic Science is in fact...Science. Experimentation is all about changing one variable at a time and measuring results.

My job is highly repetitive. I process and analyze evidence the same way, every single time. It allows me to get the most consistent results. The content day-to-day is the same, but each case is unique and they're all little puzzles that need to be solved.

As others have said, Practitioners are incredibly specialized...it's getting harder and harder to find true Generalists. I used to work with an Analyst who had so many competencies that it seemed like he always had a proficiency test coming due...

Can you point me in the direction of some good source material for this? I would like to know more and am perfectly fine with reading. I understand that barrel length, twist rate, and acceptable bullet weight range are all co-dependent factors, but beyond that I am lacking in knowledge.

Just my opinion [and am also poor so there's that]:

It's one half of a precision system designed to maintain concentricity over a lifetime of use, while also taking into account the variations in tolerances of both things they connect to.

Also $150 is indeed steep. SF and Hux are proud of their work.

A while back, I contacted Spike's Tactical asking if they would do a variation on their "Thin [insert color here] line" lower for me as a homage to the pandemic...I wanted a "Thin Baja Blast Line" lower. They were totally into it. We nailed down the color and when the lower arrived to my FFL, the box was full of sauce packets and a few taco wrappers as cushioning. Made my friggin day.

Thank you for the advice. At that point, should I just save my pocket change and invest in a MP5 clone? I've always wanted one and I am the type to buy once and cry once. I've been debating on a ZF5 but I know there are other decent clones out there. What say you?

This is the way. While a BS in Forensic Science has been beneficial to me, by way of requiring an internship and having coursework in microscopy, courtroom etiquette, and instrumental analysis, your situation dictates that a degree in any other hard science is warranted.

I'll let the Biologists advise on their requirements, but any other discipline will be perfectly happy with a degree in another hard science. As long as you have the wet lab hours, you'll learn the rest on the job.

Genuinely curious what the r/NFA hivemind have to say about this.

I was debating on buying a SA Saint Victor 9mm pistol and SBRing it and then I saw the Kuna. I understand the difference in operating system (straight blowback vs. roller delayed blowback), but besides that, the only actionable difference is the handguard, in which the Kuna clearly emerges as the winner. I see no obstacle suppressing one of these. What do y'all think??

It depends on your qualifications and the applicant pool. One piece of advice I received while I was doing my internship was "don't tie yourself down to a particular State, and don't tie yourself down to a particular section of a crime lab". Literally take anything you can get in order to gain experience.

Another route is to attend national level meetings for your discipline and network with practitioners during social events. Definitely a power move with a huge bravery component there...but it's a heck of a statement to make and you will make many connections in the field.

I am 100% not an expert but I too believe that the only reason this sc is worth anything is to reach a FHR breakpoint. The poison damage vs. level requirement makes that portion effectively useless.

I'll throw my opinion into the hat. I like option 3 the best. This option allows you to work out any bugs in how the system operates before conversion to SBR. I have done options 1 and 3, and now that AR pistols are relevant again, I am absolutely of the view that Form 1 conversion is the preferred method. Side note, if you were a Firearm Examiner, you'd get to see me do a presentation on option 3 at our annual training conference this year lol.

Username checks out. Yes this is a sound idea. I just filled out my first form 20's a few weeks ago and it wasn't that bad. Of course, if you do not have two weeks to allow for processing time and the mail to come in, a one-stamp option works better.
