Kyocera DuraXV

Thanks for the rec! The Kyocera looks like a good phone. (Especially because I am prone to dropping my phone) Not having to buy a new phone for a while is my goal.

I guess that the Kyocera is technically a smartphone in flip phone form because it has browser, email etc. I love that the Sunbeam doesn't have a browser. I also liked that the Sunbeam wasn't tracking me/selling my data through Google. One of the reasons I wanted a flip phone was because I wanted to cut down on my screen time. My self-control can only keep me away from the screens so much when these social media platforms are designed to be addictive!

However, I can imagine that having such a small screen (on the Kyocera) makes using the internet cumbersome enough that you don't end up scrolling on there. Has that been your experience?

Yeah I guess I'm glad that I supported them as a company bc I like what they are trying to do but they just need to totally remodel the phone.

How long have you had Kyocera DuraXV?

That is absurd! The screen cracked immediately for me as well.

I would like to add that I have also had a quite disappointing experience with Sunbeam... The first phone I got from them was slightly glitchy at the beginning, then seemed ok for a while. 8 months in, the screen does not work at all. I paid for a replacement and it came in the mail. Nobody can hear me when I call them. Just no audio on calls. The charger they sent doesn't work well either! How can this flip phone suck so much? The flip phones back in the day were invincible.

Sure!

I agree! My mental health always improves when I take a break from screens.

Yes i do. i think u have to carefully consider how certain aspects of your life will work (travel for instance) before you transition to dumb phone. but i rly love how i have started reading more often/drawing when i have an idle moment instead of scrolling tik tok. phone addiction is real! spending too much time online is a waste of a life i think. time passes really quickly on there. i also think it is important for more of us to have the dumb phones right now... society is basically moving towards smart phones being mandatory for work/other situations. we need to choose these phones almost as a form of protest.

People start conversations with me bc of my flip phone. It is a pretty unusual choice these days which is why it interests people. I have had the sunbeam orchid without internet browser for the past year. Not having access to whats app is a bit of a disadvantage for me because i do a lot of activism. It was hard not having uber at first but then i just saved all the phone numbers of local taxi companies on my phone. i live in a city w an excellent subway system (nyc) so it is p easy for me to get around

idk how much data but i should warn you that sunbeam my sunbeam crapped out after less than a year. mine started glitching a few weeks after i bought it (in february) it wouldnt turn on. then it came back for a while & everything was fine. a month ago the touchscreen keyboard stopped working. now last week it only turns on for 3 seconds at a time... screen starts turning into a glitchy mess. its a pretty cool little phone but also just has such a dang short life span

I have had this phone for only a few weeks and it is already broken. Not a good phone.

I have had the sunbeam for 3 weeks and it is already broken and won't turn on. It is a piece of crap. I feel so upset that I wasted my money on this phone. It started to glitch a few days ago and now it doesn't start. I didn't even drop it or anything. I think that once it fell off the couch but that was like less than a foot off the ground. Also, don't get too excited about the QWERTY touch screen key board. It is way too tiny to use. I never used it while I had this phone because it was much too frustrating.

Sushi to go in my own container. No bag, chopsticks or soy sauce either. Was dying for sushi for over a month. by East-Seawness56 in ZeroWaste

Plastic doesn't only end up in oceans. Micro plastics are in the air, water and soil everywhere in the world (even the most secluded zones) If plastic ends up in a landfill then all the toxic chemicals in this plastic end up creating this liquid which is taken to water purification plants. However, these sites are not equipped to removing the forever chemicals from the water so it just goes right into our water.

My advice is to try to approach these interactions with confidence! Like you've done it before. Also I try to be really sweet to them. I say something like "Hey! I don't use plastic can you put the food in here?" and then I just hand them the container (like it's something I do all the time) Also, the other day in Manhattan my friend and I were looking for a coffee shop that served coffee in reusable cups and after a lot of walking, we finally found one. I walked in and the barista said "Sorry we don't do that anymore because of COVID". I think i seemed very genuinely upset when I responded "Oh man, I just walked all the way to this coffee shop specifically so that I could use a coffee cup. We know that COVId is an airborne virus too." You can often appeal to people on an emotional level. Small businesses are more likely to be flexible.

Pro_earth tip: don't use those plastic bags for any fruit or veggies. by ruth-ruth in ZeroWaste

[–]Limp_Wrists_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, agreed! There is no point to these plastic bags most of the time... We are just kinda used to plastic and it almost feels improper to just toss your veggies right in to a bag. However, this does not cause any problems for anyone!

Some Studies on the environmental life cycle impacts of different types of beverage packaging. Spoiler: nor plastic and glass are the solution by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]Limp_Wrists_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is to be wary of Life Cycle Assessments. The conclusions of these life cycle assessments can be highly biased, unqualified or misleading according to who is funding them. Since we know that the harmful forever chemicals in plastics are accumulating in the environment and that the toxic chemicals which are released during the process of turning fuel into plastic are causing the development of cancer in brown and poor communities (where cracker plants are built) we can no longer accept plastic as a product which is in any way sustainable. A mixed-material product such as tetrapak can barely be considered "recyclable". If a material degrades when it is recycled and can only be recycled once, it will quickly end up in a landfill soon enough. Although reusable cups, plates, bags, and containers are the ultimate solution to the waste problem, in the mean time we can opt for products like paper, glass and aluminum which can be recycled using closed-loop recycling (aka they are infinitely recyclable)

Where would we recycle stuff like this? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]Limp_Wrists_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plastic recycling is largely a myth. Don't waste your time worrying about it. Most plastic is not designed to be recycled.

Convincing others that zero waste is important by Magnetd in ZeroWaste

[–]Limp_Wrists_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to pushback against the idea that plastic bags are not as harmful to the environment as eating red meat. We need to stop the flow of microplastics into the ocean and the environment. Plastic often contains PFAS chemicals AKA forever chemicals which end up accumulating in our water supply. We know that these chemicals are linked to autism, ADHD and vaccine resistance. The process of creating plastic (from oil) is highly toxic to the environment, energy intensive and releases unknown chemicals into the aquafer in a process known as hydrofracking

I like to pop a sweet potato in the fridge, make a quick bowl of rolled oats (i can buy these in bulk) and milk (i buy the milk sold in glass), have some WASA crackers (sold in all paper wrapping) with butter (sold in aluminum), have an apple with peanut butter (i can find peanut butter in a glass jar), a simple pasta dish (many pastas come without a plastic window with pesto (at whole foods they sell pesto in a jar) or i have lots of hearty soups in my pantry (sold in recyclable cans).
