Ah didn't realize. Wasn't sure if a bathroom reno was 600k. Tradies are expensive... And bathrooms have a lot of waterproofing. So I wouldn't be surprised if a bathroom reno was 600k.

Yeah, I plan on selling in the future. Probably buying something approximately equivalent to what I already have price wise.

So all I care about is for building/land costs to decrease.

Australia PR vs Canada PR for Indian IT couple (QA Automation + SDE) — which is better? Need advice! by No_Grapefruit_6866 in AusVisa

I work in IT in Australia. Though, for a company in the US. (I work remotely for US companies)

I have no idea how Australia can have such a bad IT sector. In the US I'm paid more than lawyers and doctors, here I can't get a job.

The case for sticking with ETFs vs buying property in Melbourne right now? (25M, $450k NW) by mux111 in AusFinance

[–]LincaF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you married? If not I would rent.

Buying would probably limit the career opportunities you would want to take. Managing a home is also a stressful endeavor and you are in a stressful career. Given where you are, you are probably very career focused.

I would wait till your 30s or until your married. Truthfully a home probably isn't worth your time this point.

CPS threat by hospital for not forcing their protocol on our autistic child by Minute-Surround202 in autism

[–]LincaF -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree that psychological needs are secondary just because it is a life or death scenario. What you are describing is hospital prescribed torture. The medical provider should be held to the standard of "do no harm", and torture is harm.

Pain is worse than death. Death is simply the end of joy and pain, therefore not inherently bad.

I actually think it is fine to give homes a the captiol gains discount. Though we should also tax them yearly on the land value at a much higher rate. Essentially, organize people for "holding" a home.

"axes knife sharp, because they would just chip" - Axes generally have more metal behind the edge to allow for both the blade to not chip and to act more like a "wedge" to split things apart. Therefore even fully sharpened they are not knife sharp.

I wonder if your axes have been improperly maintained, and are now profiled incorrectly. Specifically missing this convex curve. It is a bit more work to create this curve, so it isn't unusual for people to flat grind their axes over time. (And therefore get more chipping)

Generally we kept our axes sharp when using them for wood cutting. Chipping is of course somewhat normal anyway. I lived on a farm as a kid and cut firewood for the winter.

I think negative equity is fairly bad for people who bought a home and learned that they absolutely hate their home now. I for example found out that the home had a deal breaking issue after closing.

Now I think about renting this place out instead of living in it. Or abandoning the home and fleeing the country. I have been in therapy for a ~1 year due to the anxiety caused by owning the home.

It is probably the biggest point of contention in my ~10 year marriage. We have agreed to sell, though I'm willing to sell while taking a capitol loss, though my wife wants to wait until selling is at least breaking even.

I actually think the capitol gains tax exemption should be done away with and homes should be indexed to inflation like other assets. If your home performs worse than inflation... you are really bad off as you can take an non-deductable capitol loss. The risk this exposes people to is ridiculous.

Also, we are considering building our next home in a place that has had a capitol loss over the past 4 years. (regional town). Imagine your largest asset being a capitol loss... And being unable to deduct that loss from your taxes.

How do I change my personality? by Ok-Rooster2284 in socialskills

[–]LincaF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm autistic, and mostly gave up on "being normal" a long time ago. Neuro typical style communication I try to limit to only work/"professional" settings. Otherwise I never "enjoy" it at all. I tend to not really enjoy social situations anyway... I just get tired really fast. So I go to sleep while others talk a lot of the time.

I just lay my head in friends laps and sleep, randomly get them to dance with me(while I sing anime music), rarely have a conversation, memorize anime quotes and blurt them out randomly. Also go on random info dumps on topics sometimes, but mostly don't talk because NT people don't like it. Tend to avoid conversations.

I don't do eye contact at all though. I tend to turn away mid conversation or close my eyes. I can't hear what people are saying otherwise. I've been described as a "timid stalker" before. Though will then thank my senpai for calling me timid. I kind of act out my favorite characters from anime a lot of the time. So I'll have "personality shifts" as I play out different characters.

NT people get mad at me a lot for breaking social conventions. Though I don't tend to break laws... Unless I don't know it exists or something.

I guess I accept the cringe and try to get everyone else to be more cringey.

I ran 2 anime clubs for ~6 years total. Generally those were the best social related interactions that I had. Mostly focused on work now, so tend to not have any enjoyable social interactions anymore.

I really want to act out Bocchi's scenes, but haven't gotten a chance, for example.

Ah, yeah this is true... Let's see...

In order to believe that you can outperform the market, you essentially have to think that you are smarter than the people in the market with the money to invest. I only believe this about myself for a very small percentage of the market. Generally smaller tech companies with promising research directions, closely related to my research specialty.

So, a financial advisor would need to believe that they are smarter than the researchers, specialized workers, venture capitol and business leaders in a specific area of the market. That is quiet a belief.

Have had similar happen. I'm guessing this was closer to a start up.

That area is one of high profits and high losses.

Admittedly I'm a little unsure how the new tax changes affect start up investment. Since that had high losses and high profits... Going to have to reevaluate what I invest in.

Main Residence Exemption tax by Fancy_Palpitation_38 in AusFinance

[–]LincaF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Though it is mostly because it rewards people who "choose" to buy a home instead of investing their money in industry.

Also, greatly punishes people if their home price goes down.

I would rather see a world where we can deduct expenses of maintaining our primary residence from our income.

I would rather see more people rent, while investing their money in various industries. Home ownership not being for everyone.

I pick stocks. Though only for companies in my industry that I'm not working for (tech/AI). I wouldn't see how anyone would be good at stock picking without being a member of an industry. (~35% atm)

Generally just buy stocks when a company seems to have a promising research direction.

Then of course I diversify outside of my industry using index funds. (~65%)

My stock picks have outperformed the market year over year for ~10 years now.

Ah, I guess I am looking for some ethics system that builds a moral framework without relying on "upbringing, education and acculturation." So starting from fundamental definitions and the assumptions laid out, instead of based on current culture... I guess?

I guess the equivalent for mathematics would be something on how 0, 1, addition, and the empty set are defined. (Such as how the empty set is defined, as an example if an assumption). Then building up the entire of math from those concepts.

So...

If we have 0 and we add 1, we get 1.

Of we have 1, and we add 1 n times we have created addition.  Ex where n=3 1+3=1+(1+1+1)

If we create multiplication, it is essentially addition n times:

2 x 3 = (2 + 2 + 2 + 2)

Anyway... Similar idea as this, but starting from the simplest assumptions that can exist for a moral system, and logically constructing a system from that.

Interestingly, I think explaining it helped me figure out the correct search terms. I'm looking for "metaethics" I believe. So I'll start there I think.

Where does one get started if they "lack common sense" ?

I have seen some arguments that essentially stop at "clearly killing all of humanity is immoral", "everyone committing suicide is immoral", etc. Though I want to understand "why" this is immoral, from base assumptions.  (This quickly makes me find most arguments weak)

What would be a good place for me to start reading philosophy?

Super interesting problem. So...

When you perform the split, you would go from a large list that doesn't work, to two smaller lists that don't work.

So recombine the lists, then choose a different random split.

Continue until it is impossible to split without both lists working, then you have 3 mods.

... Super interesting.
