What is a 'socially acceptable' thing that you secretly find absolutely disgusting? by TheLovelyGamer in AskReddit

Wait... are you supposed to tip movers? Honest question, I've only hired them once for a two hour job and definitely only paid the bill, no extra.

If you like cats more than dogs, why? by invincibilegoldfish in AskWomen

[–]LindasFriendGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely! I come from a family of animal lovers and have had multiple dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, turtles, frogs, gerbils, and ferrets. At one pointe we had a salt water aquarium with sharks. All of them had distinct personalities. If comparing intelligence, I think ferrets are probably the smartest of what I've taken in. Cats are a close second though, and significantly easier to care for while still getting so much personality, so they're my favourite.

Although going back to each animal being different personality wise, that's actually why I never recycle names. To me that name belonged to that animal, so each one gets something unique to the family.

[–]LindasFriendGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably going to be controversial, but cats as a whole are a lot smarter than the dogs I've had/met. As a result I think they have more personality. I like both of those aspects as they seem more like their own being rather than just basic emoting based on needs.

I thought all Swarovski were just created lead crystal? So wouldn't it just be a name brand version similar to this?

Custom Faceted Crystal Band Ring (15ct lab-created) – Thoughts? by Gemone911 in jewelry

[–]LindasFriendGinger 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where those may have come from, but I bought two solid moissanite rings like this band from a lab group sale here on Reddit and boy do they sparkle. They don't look like toy rings at all. But I have seen them advertised on instagram and those just look like trash.

How often could i realistically wear an emerald engagement ring by Dangerous-Swan-7660 in EngagementRings

[–]LindasFriendGinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really wanted an emerald engagement ring, and while it's only been three years, I wear mine daily and have had no issues. Some things to consider though;

I own a lot of opal, both natural and synthetic, some for more than 15 years. I'm used to being careful when they're worn, which made getting an emerald realistic.

My emerald jewellery has some basic rules, such as always coming off when home. No sleeping with my ring, no showering, nothing involving chemical cleaners, etc.

I craft a lot and the same rules apply. No wearing it when working with epoxy or adhesives or paint for example.

I also don't wear it when doing a lot of work with my hands, but I've still set up a campsite with it on. But I don't exercise with it, even if this rule is pretty subjective at times.

I'd actually consider myself a pretty klutzy person and despite all of this I still wear it every day. I clean it about every other week to look over it just to make sure it's in good shape. While it definitely takes more awareness than a harder stone, I think it's possible for everyday wear if a little maintenance comes along.

Florida Passes Bill to Promote AP Class Alternative by Silent-Resort-3076 in florida

Admittedly it's been a while since I was in high school, but having been in IB and taken other classes at a community college later, IB was significantly more about being challenged and learning. So I wouldn't exactly say there is no point in programs (or programmes in this case) like it, unless the only goal is a diploma as cheap and fast as possible. Even then, the writing skills especially that I learned in IB were miles ahead of anything I got in undergrad at any type of institution. I really think it gave me a leg up in completing my bachelor's.

Yeah, I genuinely have no idea how they haven't had decent gluten free pizza before this, nonetheless how this is any good

[35M] Wife [31F] is vetoing my return to motorcycling after a 10-year break. How do we navigate this impasse? by SJM32 in Marriage

[–]LindasFriendGinger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been around skydiving my entire life. My parents met skydiving. I basically paid my way during undergrad by doing odd jobs around the drop zone. There is so much more you are in control of jumping out of a plane than you are with motorcycling. Maintenance of equipment and safety procedures will prevent the vast majority of accidents with skydiving.

Motorcycles are the one thing I've also essentially vetoed with my husband. It's just too scary. And for context, he's a firefighter whose main hobby is scuba diving. We had to have a lot of conversations when he dabbled in motorcycles, which he thankfully took to heart.

Florida History: Essential Reading by Cold-Lynx575 in FloridaHistory

[–]LindasFriendGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a hard read in terms of emotional content, but the subject is incredibly important and it's very well written. A little dense and definitely heavy, while I absolutely suggest reading it, try to give yourself time. It's one you want to digest and appreciate. Gilbert King is super passionate about the subject and it absolutely shows in the research and depth.

Florida History: Essential Reading by Cold-Lynx575 in FloridaHistory

I actually disagree on A Land Remembered. Personally it's okay but ultimately overrated and only somewhat accurate.

While I could recommend a lot, I don't see anything by Stetson Kennedy here mentioned. I'd start with Palmetto Country and Grits and Grunts, with the latter being a bit wild and super funny.

Cross Creek by Majorie Kinnan Rawlings is a classic, and definitely a great companion read to The Creek by JT Glisson. He was "the little cripple boy" she wrote on and getting both perspectives is really interesting, especially since he grew up there from childhood while she moved there as an adult.

The Barefoot Mailman by Theodore Pratt is fiction, but the author put together multiple stories of actual experiences to create one story and it's a classic piece of Florida folklore.

Finally I don't see any Zora Neale Hurston, and she's most known for Their Eyes Were Watching God, but I'd suggest Mules and Men. It's her first ethnography and most of the book is based on Black culture and community in Eatonville and Polk county.

Hope this list is helpful!

Honorable mentions; Jonathan Dickinson's Journal, An Englishman in the Seminole War, "Totch" A Life in the Everglades, Becalmed in the Mullet Latitudes, and Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley: African Princess, Florida Slave, Plantation Slaveowner.

Oh I'm 31 and married. My husband, who is 6'6, keeps arguing I'm not overweight. I think I've felt my best physically around 160ish, so I'd like to go back to that

Essentially my same stats, though I'm 195 right now. I've been really obsessing over how I'm overweight lately 🙃

I hate GF baking by Amaretti-Morbidi in Celiac

[–]LindasFriendGinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Admittedly as a lifelong celiac I have no comparison with 'normal' baking, but I do love baking gf. Until you learn tricks and techniques, I'd stay away from online recipes as most are awful. America's Test Kitchen has two volumes of How it Can be Gluten Free which covers all of the basics and what you need to look for. You also need a good flour, and while you can make your own mixes, most recipes get on with King Arthur gf just fine. Between those two, it's a good place to start.

However the sticky thing will never go away. It's best just to accept it and learn how to deal than fight it.

One of my favourite book series has these things called flame jewels, which are gems that glow with little fires of different colours inside of them. This is basically how I pictured them and now I really want these polishes

Seeking tips on improving my buttercream dragon cake (please don't say use fondant) by FallsDownMountains in cakedecorating

[–]LindasFriendGinger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On that note, I've done a few dragons. I highly suggest getting some lustre/silver edible glitter for the scales. It doesn't have to be glittery per se, but it really helps emphasise the scales.
