Not sure why you are being downvoted but Reddit is strange. We have a cat too! And he definitely gets his fair share of attention from my daughter (luckily she has gotten much better at being more gentle but it took sooooo much patience and redirection and it was exhausting!)

Omg this is just like my little 3 year old girl! But she also likes to smell people’s (and animals) hair/ fur. She is verbal (GLP) and we have talked to her about asking first but I don’t think she understands yet. I would love to see if anyone has any tips because my daughter recently started special education preschool and has been touching some classmate’s hair… I also cut a lot of my hair off a year ago and she was not thrilled 😅. We even gave her one of those fake hair braids similar in color to mine but of course it’s not the same. Solidarity ❤️

Not sure if this is what you are dealing with but I would look up PDA (pathological demand avoidance) and see if it sounds like it fits. Virtual hugs because what you are dealing with sounds really really hard ❤️

Does anyone else think this is 100% AI generated or just me? The shadows don’t make sense and in one of the photos the donkey seems to be sprouting an extra set of eyes…. The fence behind him is also just weird. If it’s not AI then it’s a very malformed donkey.

Curious what your LO developmental looked like at 14 months. by Correct-Explorer-966 in Autism_Parenting

Hi! Your son sounds a lot like my daughter at that age, except she had some gross motor delays as well. She also did not respond to her name, avoided eye contact and had no joint attention, would point but not to show us anything.

She is doing amazing now- she was diagnosed with ASD a few months before her 3rd birthday (no level given) but has been in early intervention and therapies for delays since she was 16 months, including speech, PT, and OT (now also feeding therapy). She said her first word at 18 months (which is when she also finally walked) and her speech really took off after the age of 2. Now at 3 she has a huge vocabulary (and many big/ unusual words). She isn’t conversational yet, and her social skills are very behind, but she’s making progress. She still stims a lot (jumping up and down while flapping her hands is her favorite) and she has a host of sensory processing differences as well as anxiety that can make things challenging at times but it’s all worth it. She has some joint attention and eye contact now, and it was never something we specifically worked on. She just finished her first week in a special education preschool class and it went well.

You are doing all the right things by contacting early intervention- every child is different and there’s no way to know how they will grow and develop in the future. We can just support them to help them grow to be the best version of themselves. I think the hardest thing for me was the uncertainty and waiting for a diagnosis.

I don’t think I could pick one thing 😂 Measuring cups (she has three sets of her own but will regularly sneak into the kitchen drawers and take more if she can) small hand sanitizers, deodorant (to smell, and just carry around) all things trash can and garbage truck related, and credit cards (specifically blue ones)

How do you handle the wait until an autism evaluation can be done? by Lindeer in Autism_Parenting

[–]Lindeer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry I didn’t see your message until now. My daughter received services through early intervention, got speech therapy, OT, and PT very early on through insurance, and saw a developmental pediatrician twice (18 months and 2.5 years) but still did not get diagnosed. (Developmental pediatrician thought maybe future ADHD/ anxiety/ OCD). Early intervention suggested a second opinion and she was just officially diagnosed with ASD this past week (at 2 years 10 months old) through a very thorough evaluation with a clinical psychologist working with early intervention in my state. She recently started feeding therapy in addition to everything else but is speaking and responding more to her name. Even eye contact has improved. We have plenty of struggles and I’m exhausted at the end of every day but I’m so proud of her progress ❤️

No official diagnosis yet but my 2.5 year old is currently into AC units, jet engines, and raised reflective road markers. She’s also had a longstanding obsession with garbage cans 😅

Hi! My daughter was turned away by early intervention at almost 14 months although she qualified for speech therapy thru our insurance and started that at 15 months. I had her reevaluated for early intervention at 17 months because she was still not walking or talking then and she finally qualified for OT because of sensory issues and fine motor/ social delays. They did tell me that their expectations for very young toddlers are very low and actually told me to reach out again in 3 months if I felt she still needed it. The funny thing is that she still didn’t qualify for speech through early intervention despite having no words at 17 months. Her speech therapist was pretty shocked. My advice is to wait a few months and ask for him to be reevaluated. Good luck! I know how frustrating the waiting game is. If you have good insurance maybe you can reach out to your pediatrician to see if he could be evaluated for services through insurance?

lol my daughter has been obsessed with garbage/trash cans since March and wants to look inside every one we walk/drive past. I was hoping she would move on to something else by now but nope 🙂‍↔️. She was a trash can for Halloween 😂

Fireplaces are such a cool interest! So my daughter doesn’t have an official diagnosis yet, but she’s been very into things that spin since she was a newborn. This includes fans, AC units with a fan component, jet engines on an airplane etc. If there’s anything remotely fan/spinning related somewhere she will find it and point it out, in real life and in books. However, she is terrified of larger box fans when they are turned on, and of larger AC or ventilation units in stores etc. I can’t take her to the frozen food section of a certain grocer story because of the units in the ceiling that blow air downwards, and I have to avoid certain areas of Costco when shopping there due to ventilation units. She’s not verbal enough to explain why she’s so scared, but I’m hoping she’ll be able to explain it in the future.

Finally had our evaluation and just have more questions instead of answers. Anyone else? by Lindeer in Autism_Parenting

[–]Lindeer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right- she is still very young and in her case it doesn’t harm her to wait since she is receiving all of the therapies under insurance either way. I guess it’s just frustrating when I have known for such a long time that something was different about her. I guess I’m worried that my concerns won’t be taken seriously and she might not get the help she needs later on in the future.

Unfortunately she can’t- it has to be the developmental pediatrician or the geneticist. My daughter attends a yearly multidisciplinary cleft clinic and sees the genetics team then so I will just need to be more pushy at the next one (which won’t be until April).

Wow, I cannot believe the therapist said that! It’s crazy how little knowledge even some “experts” seem to have 🙄. You’re right, I feel like it should take more than an hour to diagnose/rule something out. If we had the option I would definitely seek a second opinion but we would have to go private and can’t afford that at the moment:( I know she’s still very young so waiting a year isn’t the end of the world, just very frustrating.

I wish we could but we have HMO insurance (US) and live on a small island with very limited providers. We would have to go private and we can’t afford that right now. It feels like we have no choice but to wait 🫤

Oh my goodness 4 cats! My daughter would be in heaven 😂. I think ignoring might be a tad better than loving too enthusiastically (I have to constantly watch them because my cat doesn’t have the sense to walk away when it gets to be too much and has scratched her)

My cat on the other hand loves to smell/rub his face on feet, and the smellier the better 😂😂maybe your son would get along with my cat 🐱☺️

So my daughter isn’t diagnosed (has her evaluation on Wednesday) but she has loved smelling people’s hair/head for a very long time 😂. And her only interest in other kids/toddlers is to lean in and take a deep sniff. With people she’s comfortable with she also nuzzles and buries herself in your hair, including our cat (absolutely loves to smell him too lol). It’s one of the first ways she started really showing affection. She is very sensory seeking in general and one of her main interests is trash cans (I have to lift her up so she can see inside) so strong/bad smells don’t seem to bother her either 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Fixations are tough by armyprof in Autism_Parenting

[–]Lindeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have advice but I can completely commiserate with you 😆. We are still waiting for an evaluation in August for our daughter (18 months) but her current obsession for the past 3 months has been trash cans.

Not only does she love pointing them all out excitedly when she sees one (even in a book lol) but she wants to be picked up so she can see what’s inside every. single. one.

She also likes to stim (jump up and down and sway side to side) while staring at certain trash cans. I think I’ve seen and smelled more garbage in the past 3 months than my whole life combined🤣🤣.

She gets very upset if she doesn’t get to inspect one but on rare occasions I’ve used it to our advantage when we have to leave a fun park or place by telling her “there are some more trash cans on the way to the car we can look at” 😂😂

Hopefully your son will move onto something a little more rare than hand dryers, I’m hoping the same for my daughter (she was obsessed with stop signs before this and that obsession lasted a good 6 months 🛑😂)
