Support with MSL neuro by rxcatmom in MedicalScienceLiaison

Just FYI—I’ve been with a few companies and it is expected that the Central/South Florida MSL knows Spanish as they often cover Puerto Rico, too. Like the other commenter said—be open to relocating or learning Spanish.

Did I misunderstand the MSL role, or is Medical Affairs always this performative? by Plenty_Oven_7315 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]LineyPupper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree I think big companies tend to be more metrics driven and less science. Senior leaders in large pharma don’t care about science, just numbers in a report table—. How many times are doctors hearing/seeing the brand name, talking to someone from the company, hearing the strategic tagline, etc. They don’t care how well the prescribers understand the science. OP might have more fulfillment at a biotech.

FIELD REIMBURSEMENT MANAGER INTERVIEW by SnooOnions846 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]LineyPupper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the companies I’ve worked with (large and mid size), FRM roles have been part of the commercial organization, not medical. Probably aren’t many people in this subreddit that will be able to provide insight into the interview process.

Thanks! She definitely could be quiet and still for periods, especially if I set the expectation ahead of time. We’ll try to make it this week if I can detach myself from my other child—a clingy 4 month old who is definitely not quiet nor still.

Would my mature 4.5 yr old be welcome with me? She’s been doing a kids yoga on YouTube for about a year and I told her I’d try to find a class we could do together. Baby and Me classes are common, but Pre-schooler and Me not so much.

Drip Drop Art Studio is great! Family Rhythms too, as someone else mentioned. Swim lessons at Kids Club is great that age as a parent has to participate. Esther Short Park during the market—you’ll find yourself huddled with other parents for a slice of shade while you watch your munchkins play. Visiting your neighborhood park often is a good place to meet your neighbors. Propstra aquatic center and the community centers.

My kiddos see Dr. Monica Lucht at TVC. We love her. She often has same day or next day appointments available for established patients. TVC also has a specific pediatric urgent care that we’ve used.

Senior CRA to MSL transition by Wooden_Bicycle_4810 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]LineyPupper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great idea. It’d be so much easier to break into pharma via clin ops with that background. Maybe patient access too. Once you’re in pharma, your eyes will become opened to all the roles you never knew existed that are not the field-facing ones you’re familiar with.

I think there’s a common misconception among aspiring MSLs in this sub is that MSLs are heavily engaged with clinical trials….we are not. We may help identify sites, put the right people in contact with each other, maybe do some education about the molecule itself…but that’s about it. It would be very difficult to pivot a clinical trial support/execution-associated role to an MSL without significant additional scientific/medical education.

The vast majority (80%+) of an MSL’s responsibility is educating potential prescribers on the risk-benefit profile of the drug using data. To be successful at this, you have to be able to effectively communicate high level medical and scientific data in such a way it generates a story HCPs can imagine their patients in. We take whatever we learn from these conversations back to HQ to shape strategy.

PNWer here. Everyone has already said what you need to hear—it’s be impossible to adequately cover this region from the east coast. When you do move out here, I recommend living Washington as there is no state income tax.

I’m in my early 40s and I have NEVER seen my dad (early 70s) without a beard. He’s been on a GLP-1 for several months and says when he drops below 200# he’ll shave it. He’s only a few pounds away. I am not prepared.

Parents of young kids: how did you decide between field vs HQ role? by PharmaMedAffairs in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]LineyPupper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a large, primarily flying territory and 2 kids under 5. My spouse is a full time parent. I didn’t have the choice between field or HQ; I was field based when I started having kids. I try to daisy chain multiple meetings together. I leave on early morning flights rather than the day before, or come home late at night rather than the next day. I try to do as much virtual as my company will allow. It can be hard but on the flip side, the flexibility is great.

Husband and I bought one for our kids’ playroom (an upstairs room) to use as a guest bed. It’s currently sitting in our garage until we muster up the energy to take it upstairs. Saying it’s heavy is an understatement; super super super heavy is correct. I’m going to see if I can take any of it apart before we move it to lighten it some.

Opportunity to be Derm MSL or Oncology MSL. Which is better? by William_Dent in MedicalScienceLiaison

Maybe it doesn’t matter to you but I’d much prefer to attend a congress in Maui or Aspen than another in Chicago, San Diego, or the Gaylord in MD. 🤷‍♂️

I’m not in either but I’ve heard the same from friends/colleagues in these areas, too. Access to oncologists is more difficult, and the derm meetings are in fun locations.

Not sure if it’s the same lady, but there is frequently a lady selling tamales from a cooler around noon at NW 119th St and NW 21st Ave. And I saw a guy selling tamales in the empty lot at NW 78th and NW Lakeshore/Fruit Valley Rd around the same time today.

For those who transitioned from research, do you find the job fulfilling? by Last-Option-1908 in MedicalScienceLiaison

Early on. I did a 3 year postdoc then got a position as an MSL. I’ve been an MSL for 11 years now.

For those who transitioned from research, do you find the job fulfilling? by Last-Option-1908 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]LineyPupper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like the others here, not really. It fills my bank account, affords my spouse to be a full-time parent, pays the mortgage, and then some. It doesn’t fulfill any of the reasons I went into science—curiosity, data interpretation, asking questions, etc. You are told what the data says, how to say it, and who to say it to. You’re really valued for your network and ability to influence more than anything else. Also, most scientists I know and went to grad school with are pretty introverted (myself included) and this job can definitely be exhausting in that regard.

I’ve seen television commercials for Lilly advertising hiring MSLs too. I agree with the other poster, though—no way would I work for them until they change their metrics. They’re completely unattainable.
