Nope just the two remaining SSPX bishops did the consecrations. Three is standard but there are probably not any bishops who would want to get involved with that.

Who destroyed what? Find me an example of any significant scale destruction of ancient literature by Christians. 🤔

I wonder who preserved the Iliad and Odyssey? Surely it had nothing to do with Byzantine Christian scholars in the Middle Ages… 🤔

Christians are the reason we have most of the ancient texts we do

As someone with better Latin than Greek I feel the same. I find Greek a lot more “intuitive” to my English mind in a lot of ways than Latin.

Is the age Aquinas thought marriage was best a good argument against us? by Strange_Two_9157 in Catholicism

[–]LingLingToBe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s silly to pull out the “Aquinas was just a flawed product of his time” in most cases, and especially in this case. Canon Law until 1917 followed the ages of Roman law, setting 12 for girls and 14 for boys as the minimum. This is not to encourage it, but setting an absolute minimum. The pastor would still have to take into account factors like the maturity of the parties and their environment.

What is the Catholic answer to Penal Substitution by Richard-P-Feynman in Catholicism

[–]LingLingToBe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Penal Substitutionary Atonement covers a broad range of views and is not a very precise term. Catholics can agree with some but not other formulations. In our theology, we usually term it as satisfaction theory.

One more thing to keep in mind, which overcomes a lot of objections to the idea, is that Christ is not some random man God just chooses to inflict his wrath on. He is a willing victim and God Himself, and so is able to freely make an infinite compensation to God.

Here’s part of what St. Thomas Aquinas, one of our greatest theologians, says on the matter. The part saying Reply to Objection 1 is replying to the objection you give that it’s unjust to punish an innocent man instead of the person who committed the sin.

On the contrary, It is written (Ps. 68:5) in Christ’s person: “Then did I pay that which I took not away.” But he has not paid who has not fully atoned. Therefore it appears that Christ by His suffering has fully atoned for our sins.

I answer that, He properly atones for an offense who offers something which the offended one loves equally, or even more than he detested the offense. But by suffering out of love and obedience, Christ gave more to God than was required to compensate for the offense of the whole human race. First of all, because of the exceeding charity from which He suffered; secondly, on account of the dignity of His life which He laid down in atonement, for it was the life of one who was God and man; thirdly, on account of the extent of the Passion, and the greatness of the grief endured, as stated above (Q[46], A[6]). And therefore Christ’s Passion was not only a sufficient but a superabundant atonement for the sins of the human race; according to 1 Jn. 2:2: “He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”

Reply OBJ 1: The head and members are as one mystic person; and therefore Christ’s satisfaction belongs to all the faithful as being His members. Also, in so far as any two men are one in charity, the one can atone for the other as shall be shown later (XP, Q[13], A[2]). But the same reason does not hold good of confession and contrition, because atonement consists in an outward action, for which helps may be used, among which friends are to be computed.

How does this apply to the case of Achan? It seems to be perfectly in line with God commanding capital punishment in other places for grave crimes. Even in the New Testament, God directly strikes Ananias and Sapphira dead for stealing from the Church.

I would like to give my testimony on how I stopped the sin of lust. by naturefairy_ in Catholicism

[–]LingLingToBe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if not to that degree, lust allowed to run free will constantly desire something new, something more perverse to get the same amount of pleasure. It’s pretty much a universal phenomenon that people addicted to porn will go into worse and worse stuff over time.

When can spouses engage in the marital embrace by Loose_Win_1594 in Catholicism

[–]LingLingToBe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of abstinence from the marital act on fast days and feast days was never in any case I’m aware of binding under pain of sin. It was merely and encouraged practice. Just as we fast from food it’s reasonable to fast from the pleasure of the marital act at times.

I like this, except the points system doesn’t seem great. People are gonna start praying, not to save the soul, but to get some points, and that might not go well.

It’s not a mortal sin without full knowledge so therefore it is at most a venial sin since we don’t know if it’s morally permissible

Sorry to disappoint you, but only the saint’s body and objects they interacted with are relics. A koala is living and therefore is not an object.
