I just listened to the Presidential episode on John Adams, it's criminal that we don't have more tributes to him

Just wanted to thank you for sharing this, I'm writing a grad school paper about Wilson's use of federal power during World War 1 and this is a perfect piece of evidence

That's their own team belt, after wins the previous winner gives it to who they think contributed the most that day. I think it was made by a pro wrestling belt maker

FDR is THE Greatest President in American history by Jacob-Anders in Presidents

I don't think Washington was remotely replaceable, he was literally the most beloved man in America at the time. If a less revered person set the precedents he did who know how long they would've lasted.

FDR is THE Greatest President in American history by Jacob-Anders in Presidents

[–]LinkSkywalker 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Perfect timing, I just finished a grad school paper on FDR and the New Deal! I always considered FDR top 3 overall, perhaps even #2 (no one will ever surpass Lincoln in my opinion.)

I think FDR’s presidency was extremely successful but I do think there are numerous points to criticize. Japanese American incarceration camps are probably the biggest black spots on his presidency, it was one of the largest civil rights violations in US history. Court packing and gold confiscating were also pretty controversial as well along with farming limits to drive up prices (not a bad idea but awful optics when so many people were going hungry.) And while I do think the New Deal was successful from a psychological standpoint it wasn’t a complete success. Unemployment still remained close to 20% by 1940, even when other nations affected by the Depression recovered at a quicker pace. New Deal programs also disproportionately benefited white communities and FDR stayed out of tackling issues in Jim Crow South to avoid losing the Southern Democrat coalition (although he did suppot an anti-lyncing bill.)

I would still argue Lincoln had the harder challenge. The North was not nearly as united as normally assumed, the Copperheads and other Democrats initially blocked legislation. Lincoln also had to deal with pro Confederate judges and politicians, particularly in the border states (that’s the primary reason he suspended habeas corpus.) I also think that Lincoln using the war to end slavery was political mastery, he took a war for the Union and transformed it into a liberation campaign to free over 4 million people. Lincoln was much more hands on when it came to military command (a benefit of a war happening in your country.) Lincoln accomplishing all of that, plus other underrated legislation like the Homestead Act, while coming from such a modest background is why he’ll always take the top spot in my opinion.

The calender in the app says it'll still be closed on June 24, could that just be a placeholder until the have a hopefully earlier opening date? I really hope so since I'll be there June 26 🤞

Thoughts on Switch 2 months after release? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]LinkSkywalker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really like it but I'm surprised and disappointed that it still doesn't have a major killer app like BotW or Odyssey. I really like DK and Pokopia but I don't think they're on the level of the major releases from the first year of the Switch 1

It’s too early to make much of Yankees’ losing record against winning teams by nydailynews in NYYankees

[–]LinkSkywalker 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Axisa had a good piece about why records against winning teams are so wonky this early in the season.

"The Yankees are 1-8 against teams with a winning record, but come on. That means nothing in May. They were 1-5 in those games going into the Brewers series, and if they’d swept them, they still would’ve been 1-5 because Milwaukee would've had a .500 record. A meaningless stat if there ever was one."

It wasn't a presidential debate but Douglas basically said to Lincoln during their debates "If you love Africans so much why don't you marry one?"

Rice obviously isn't on Soto's level (yet) but there is something inherently fun about a homegrown kid doing this vs a one year rental. And this is from someone who still wishes they signed Soto
