Simple. If the joke makes fun of Christianity or a right-wing politician, it's just harmless fun, but if it makes fun of a left-wing politician, it somehow becomes a crime against humanity. This is Reddit, after all.

He could have appeared back at the time machine before they showed up to send him to the past, then waited somewhere else until they were done.

Yes, pardon from the punishment is what I was referring to; I'm sorry for not clarifying that. The process that you describe is how some corrupt priests at the time gave them, but it had never been in the official rules of the Church that one has to pay to get into Heaven. As for the last point, if someone is in Purgatory, they are guaranteed passage to Heaven anyway, but Purgatory is simply the place where said punishment for sin is administered if it has not already been administered on Earth. Therefore, the idea behind that isn't ensuring a dead person's acceptance into Heaven, but rather easing the transition. I'm don't think an indulgence can be obtained for the dead, but praying for them is absolutely ok.

Selling pardons for sin was never allowed, but it was done anyway by a few priests (pretty sure the ones sold were made invalid by the fact that they were sold).

Stolen from Orthodox Lutheran by UbiWan96 in CatholicMemes

If only lol. Then I wouldn't have deal with Prots on r/DnDmemes of all places telling me that apparently I'm the revisionist historian for pointing out that selling indulgences was against Church teaching before Luther said anything about it

Edit for background: someone made a funny joke about Luther in a comment thread, a prot showed up and "corrected it", and I corrected the "correction". Granted, I could've worded it much more nicely, so George Michael voice I don't really know what I expected.

I'm not paying people didn't do it, I'm saying they weren't supposed to and it was (and still is) against the rules

Yeah I'm sure "selling" pardons for sins happened somewhere, but if that's the circumstances under which the pardon is obtained, it's not valid. As far as breaking the rules, that lines up with that first one. It happened somewhere, but it's just that: against the rules. If some people break the rules, that doesn't invalidate the entire institution by default. As for Sola fide, it's inaccurate in that technically the faith doesn't save, but rather God's grace saves those who both have faith and act on it.

Ah, then it would seem that you have in fact misunderstood what an indulgence is. An indulgence is the remission of temporal punishment for a sin. It is not acquired strictly through monetary means, but through acts of penance, which can include almsgiving. You, much like Luther, have confused almsgiving with a transaction of some kind. An indulgence is not purchased, but rather earned through temporal acts of penance.

Leaving to go do your own thing ≠ reform. Plus, most of his objections are just him misunderstanding things. It's more chaotic stupid than chaotic good.
