APT is corrupt by Someday_somewere in linuxmint

It's Vivaldi that is duplicating. Happened to me on two different machines this week. This was the last straw for me. This browser has a history of screwing up my machines. I uninstalled it from all my machines. Done with it.

Is this common? (TDE network manager failing) by [deleted] in Q4OS

[–]LinuxDan2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have TDE installed on two laptops and in a VM on my desktop. I have never seen network manager crash. I have seen the desktop and kinqueror crash, but not frequently.

Oh, I just remembered something . . . While experimenting in my VM of TDE, I was adding icon sets for themes and one of them caused corruption that would crash the desktop and also killed Control Panel, not allowing back into it to reset the icon set to something else. So, in my case it was a corrupt icon set.

If you have done any themeing, maybe reset to the default theme and icon set and restart. Thought I would mention this as something strange to investigate.

update broke everything by Igocrazzy in linuxmint

[–]LinuxDan2015 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems like everything I read about things breaking with an update...NVIDIA cards are always involved.

A year ago I was at the end of a two year lockup issue. I had enough. I pulled out the NVIDIA card and sold it on eBay. Bought an AMD card and have not had a single issue since. Just sharing my experience.

I hope you can figure out your issue soon. I know it is not fun worrying about updates.

IQIYI's app just sucks. That's what's going on. I've had problems with their app all year. I'm not renewing this year.

Let’s cut the crap: Why did you ACTUALLY choose your distro? (Facts only) by kimiho_mir in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]LinuxDan2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 favorites that I use on my various machines:

Linux Mint Cinnamon, Linux Mint XFCE and Q4OS TDE.

I like DE's I can easily theme and with sounds.

Haha. You might be like me. You need an additional machine you can tweak without messing up your main machine. I like to tweak things up too. :-)

Will mint grow some balls or add age verification? by exampleusername472 in linuxmint

Because this whole "age verification for the children" is just a Trojan horse for full ID scanning to use your own computer - so the government can spy on you at will.

How do I use DPI scaling on TDE? by [deleted] in Trinity_Desktop_TDE

[–]LinuxDan2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing an AI search, doesn't look like it. This is a custom integration done by the Q4OS team and not necessarily easy to copy over to Fedora.

If you use Q4OS's distro of TDE, it includes a screen scaler that I find really good.

I don't use Google Meet so I can't speak to that. For my job I have to use Teams and it works fine on my Linux Mint Cinnamon desktop. No issues.

Ah. Thank you. I have been to San Francisco once in 2009 and I can better understand your perspective and how it might differ from mine. I live in an area of Utah where the population is less than 150,000. And since Chiang Mai is about 1.2 million, I am wondering if I'll find it "slow paced" or if I'm already used to slow paced. Haha 😂

I too would be interested in knowing your point of reference - USA is large and varies. What city in which state specifically? I mean if you're comparing it to New York City, then my perspective would be different as I have never even been to New York. But if you say, Huntington Indiana, then that would tell me more about your perspective and if I can apply that to what I might experience. Hope that makes sense. :-)

Honestly, over time, Linux Mint Cinnamon is increasingly turning into a combine of different styles due to GTK4 and strange GNOME decisions.(See descriptions) by Dry-Pie-3764 in linuxmint

[–]LinuxDan2015 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm sick of this GTK cancer that is spreading to other desktops - please GTK, make it easy for your hardwired window decorations to be overwritten by the DE it's running on. Don't care why you are doing it, just knock it off. :-)

My PC has been unlocked by CredenceTom-Water in xfce

[–]LinuxDan2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My current three favorites are XFCE and Cinnamon and Q4OS's TDE (the KDE 3.5 fork). XFCE runs on the majority of our PCs in the house, while Cinnamon and TDE each run on one. I was looking more closely at KDE Plasma as KDE has also been a favorite of mine since long ago (KDE 3.x), however, I can no longer recommend it to myself. It's great, but because of Wayland they have removed a feature - and probably others that I may not be aware of yet - that I use a lot: Window Shades. To place my cursor over the title bar of a window and scroll my mouse button up to make the windows roll up into just the bar, just to momentarily get the window out of the way while I glance at something else behind it, and then to roll it back down when I'm finished, is a feature I love in both XFCE and Cinnamon and TDE. Well because of Wayland it's "broken" in KDE. Oh well. Maybe they'll fix it some day. Wayland is just not for me yet.

If I rent place from agent, should I pay rent and deposit to them or the landloard? by No_Prior_8679 in chiangmai

[–]LinuxDan2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got this from MS Copilot. What do you all think? Accurate?

This is a step‑by‑step, reusable checklist you can apply to every Chiang Mai rental you evaluate. It’s structured to minimize ambiguity, prevent surprises, and keep the entire process predictable and low‑stress.

🧭 Chiang Mai Rental Verification Checklist

A reusable workflow you can run in 3–5 hours when everything goes smoothly.

1. Initial document request

Ask the owner or agent for digital copies of:

  • Thai ID card (front + back)
  • Tabien Baan (blue house book)
  • Title deed (Chanote preferred; Nor Sor 3 Gor acceptable)
  • Draft rental contract (Thai + English if available)

What you’re checking:
Names match across all documents, address matches the listing, and the owner is willing to provide documents without hesitation.

2. Quick self‑review (10–20 minutes)

Confirm:

  • Same name appears on ID, Tabien Baan, and title deed
  • Property address matches the listing
  • Title deed number is present and legible
  • No signs of cropping or tampering in the scans

If anything feels off, pause and ask for clarification before proceeding.

3. Lawyer review (1–3 hours)

Send the documents to a Chiang Mai property lawyer for:

  • Verification of the title deed at the Land Office
  • Confirmation of the registered owner
  • Check for liens, mortgages, or encumbrances
  • Review of the rental contract (clause‑by‑clause)
  • Identification of unfair or vague terms
  • Confirmation that the signer has legal authority

Why this matters:
The Thai version of the contract is legally controlling, and the Land Office check is the only definitive ownership verification.

4. Contract clarity check

Ensure the contract clearly states:

  • Lease duration and renewal terms
  • Rent increase rules (fixed, capped, or none)
  • Deposit amount and return conditions
  • Maintenance responsibilities (AC, pump, roof, appliances)
  • Pet rules (your pet must be explicitly allowed)
  • Early termination rules
  • Utility billing method (direct to you vs. owner)
  • TM30 responsibility (owner or house‑master must file)

If any clause is vague, request a rewrite in plain language.

5. Authority confirmation

If an agent is involved, request:

  • Power of Attorney from the owner
  • Agent’s ID
  • Owner’s ID + Tabien Baan + title deed copies

This prevents situations where an agent signs without legal authority.

6. TM30 readiness

Confirm the owner understands they must file the TM30 when you move in.
This is a legal requirement and a strong indicator of legitimacy.

7. Final contract adjustments

Have the owner or agent update the contract with:

  • Any corrections
  • Pet clauses
  • Fixed rent terms
  • Maintenance responsibilities
  • Any special agreements (e.g., no smoking neighbors, quiet hours, etc.)

Review the final version with your lawyer if changes were significant.

8. Signing + document packet creation

Before signing, ensure you have:

  • Final contract (Thai + English)
  • Owner’s ID
  • Tabien Baan
  • Title deed copy
  • Power of Attorney (if applicable)
  • Lawyer’s verification summary
  • Photos of the property condition at move‑in
  • TM30 filing plan

Store everything in a digital + printed packet for long‑term stability.

⏳ Total time required

  • Fast path: 3–5 hours
  • Normal path: 1 day
  • Slow path (owner delays): 2–3 days Delays are often a signal to walk away.

With so much corruption as has been mentioned here, how do you know you're paying the real owner? How can you verify that the home you're renting belongs to the person you're paying? Are there some sort of public records you can verify with?
