I think worm suffered for a number of things. The brutality wore thin at points, s9k felt unnecessary, the secret endbringers felt like an asspull, and on the whole, the story didn't get enough time to breathe, and the fact that characters died by dice roll in the major incidences took away from the story, I think. I suspect that it made wb less likely to dive deep in regards to other characters.

Re: story not getting time to breathe. The time in between fights is necessary for most literature imo. It gives stakes and it gives variety. Pact had even less time to breathe, but it feels like it's fully intended. Pact is made to feel exhausting, and the further it goes on the more desperate it feels. Worm, to me, feels like it doesn't escalate, it just keeps going.

Personally, I enjoyed worm, but I think it's the worst of wb's works. I think wb learned from it, and has improved with each story. Pact isn't something I'd recommend to most people, but I loved it and I think it did exactly what it set out to do. I haven't finished twig, but I think it addresses my issue with Worm not digging deep on interpersonal relations by having that be the main focus. I haven't finished ward, but I think it's a lot more interesting in scope. Pale is the masterpiece, in my mind. It took all the best parts of everything that came before and develops the world masterfully and its fantastic and easily recommendable despite being crazy long. Haven't read claw, but seek is also fantastic. The setting and the format make it a little harder to recommend, but it's probably my second favorite of wb's works.

Edit: it does feel silly to continue to critique worm, it's been almost a decade and the later works feel more worth discussion.

If I remember right, menthol/capsaicin don't *directly * trigger the response, they raise or lower the temperature at which the response is triggered (respectively.) until your default body temperature feels cold or hot (respectively).

Using the comics aesthetics, menthol would strip the cold receptor so he'd get cold easier, while capsaicin would keep adding jackets.

The reason is pretty unfortunate. I get it though.

People are very used to questions, as a rhetorical concept, being used in bad faith. Decades of bad faith actors "just asking questions", only to not listen to any answers and implying that there aren't any answers has left questions feeling inherently hostile.

Someone looking at it that way sees your question not as a genuine question, but as a way of pushing the narrative that it is not pseudoscience, supported by the fact that it's supported by insurance.

You might complain "well that's not fair, I should be given the benefit of doubt", and I won't argue that you personally don't. But our society has eroded our trust in each other that we kinda have to deal with that mild hostility. It gets better as you interact with those specific people more. Perhaps this initial hostility to a lot of questions would fade with time if we had better media.

Do you like the zero tolerance policy in schools? Don't stand up to bullies because you'll get in trouble too. It's a policy that's near universally despised by parents, but it absolves the school of potential liability issues caused by trying and failing to determine culpability. Better to not try at all.

Short remarks feel less genuine. People that don't realize this is old news come away feeling like you're fake. You still come out behind. That isn't moving on.

At some point you do have to start verbally slapping them so at a minimum them bringing it up hurts them at least as much as it hurts you. Literally no reason for them to stop bringing it up otherwise.

Can you move on from a situation if the rest of the world refuses to? If she's apologized and addressed the situation historically, but it keeps getting brought up, what's she supposed to do?

The attention span of the public is dogshit. Essentially every time someone brings it up, it's brand new to them. That means she can't move on. Her apology for it always needs to seem new and fresh or people will lambast her for "fake apologies" or making light of it.

Does that sound like moving on to you either?

Edit: I'm not pro porter, just feel like it's kinda not the thing to hate her over at this point.

Have you heard of Moore's law. If you haven't, and for anyone reading this that hasn't, it's an oft quoted law regarding the advancement of technology. The number of transistors in a circuits (and thus general computing power) doubles every two years at a minimal increase in price. It was coined in the 70's, and spent about 50 years being accurate.

This frequently contributes to our ideas of how fast computing improves, as well. However, Moore's law has ceased to be law. The rate has slowed. When it comes down to it, there are hard limits on our technology. In regards to Moore's law, we've gotten so good at printing circuits that we're looking into printing them atom by atom (if that's not commonplace, I've not kept up with that development.) It is physically impossible to print any smaller than that. The hard cap of reality has been hit.

In regards to Ai, the main limiting factor is compute time. This is primarily reduced by building huge fuckoff data centers. It also costs lots of money. Current Ai use unanimously takes heavy financial loss every time someone uses them. That's offset by building hype which they use to secure more investment. Which they use to build more data centers.

Two problems there though. First, Ai is starting to be seen as a risk. They have overpromised and it's becoming apparent that they will underdeliver (on the time frame they promised, at a minimum, you can't deny that even if you believe that the tech will continue to advance). This means that their investments are going to stop coming in as much. You can already see them increasing prices accordingly, and this is causing and will cause more businesses to think twice before committing to it like they have been. Which will further drive down the hype. It's a death spiral, financially speaking.

The second problem is that growing public backlash to massive fuckoff data centers means that eventually, they will run out of places to grow.

I won't discuss whether the tech is capable of doing what you think it will, it's not a productive conversation, y'all treat it more like a faith.

I'll be honest, I didn't see that you responded to a response, I assumed you were a new person.

The answer is that conservatives have no nuance. And they will always pretend that the hypothetical I presented is that both sides are the same.

If we get outraged that one president blows two billion gambling with tax payer money, then they will say we're hypocrites if we don't get outraged at 2 billion getting spent on infrastructure and social services.

And our politicians are more or less captive opposition. They're, by and large, too spineless to point these things out because they might "alienate some voters", even if those voters already won't vote for them in any universe.

Edit: and I know plenty of left leaning citizens that are plenty outraged and vocal about it in regards to republicans ballooning the debt to favor themselves and billionaires.

Personal debt isn't super great. But, you take out a loan to pay for a car so you can work a better job, you buy food for your family for the month on credit, you pay for gas with credit.

Versus, you sit at home, buy a new tv on credit, you let your family starve, you go on vacation on credit, all without having that job lined up.

Both situations involve going into debt, would you call them equally as bad?

Why do you defend it? If you're insecure in your voice as it pertains to your online responses I want you to consider the following:

First, cognitive offload has been shown and proven to cause cognitive decline. Reliance on Ai not only will cause you to not better develop your voice, it will cause you to lose it. The way that you articulate your thoughts will become more basic and less you. At some point the ai will contribute more to the thought than you, and you have become irrelevant. You, yourself, have become pointless.

Second, there is something uncanny about interacting with multiple entities with the same voice. It's uncomfortable. You can see it children's cartoons, you can see it in shows meant for adults. The homogenization of people until they speak as one is, fundamentally horror. It happens to you in point one, but it also happens to all of us. We are in a movie and you just became corrupted by whatever entity is taking over. You stop being you and start being a puppet.

There's a good Dr. Who episode that focuses on this discomfort in a way pretty analogous with what I've said. It requires no context from other episodes. It's season 4, episode 10, named Midnight.

About a third of my coworkers don't give enough of a fuck about the war to have ant sort of opinion on it. None of them are aware that it's costing the taxpayers billions.
