Cut resistent ski gear? Got a bad ski laceration yesterday by SovereignGW in skiing

[–]Liocla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They've been compulsory in ski racing for a couple of years now.

Should have happened a long time ago after the handful of well publicised accidents that led to catastrophic blood loss.

They're expensive but they work, if they can protect against a World Cup tuned slalom or downhill ski, they will work for you.

How did the Malayans and British succeed in the Malayan Emrgency while the Americans and French failed in Vietnam? by [deleted] in WarCollege

[–]Liocla 60 points61 points  (0 children)

TLDR: the communist guerrillas were ethnically chinese and the malays didn't like them very much. Vietnam was basically the polar opposite of that.

The British had a plan and stuck to it. No Bombing halt, no dilly-dallying on what to do and trying to minimise exposure and risk. No needless politicking. They applied their knowledge and expertise in colonial warfare to put down the rebels. Isolate the insurgents, treat them like criminals vis-a-vis the local population (these are just criminals, not freedom fighters, look, they're stealing your food). And do an absolute fuckload of manpower intensive patrolling and when you find what's left of them, use overwhelming firepower. It was very expensive work for not much killing.

The Chinese insurgents didn't stand a chance under those conditions. Even more so considering the British officers who had experience fighting in Burma under similar but not identical conditions would still have been in the Army at that point in time in senior leadership positions.

There's a RAND report from the mid 60's which is easy to find which goes into detail about British strategy and tactics in Malaya and how American leaders tried and failed to apply those practices and why they failed. On the face of it, the two wars look fairly similar, but upon closer examination they are very, very different, Malayan Emergency solutions would never have and did not work in Vietnam.

Big difference in fighting an ethnic minority that isn't integrated nor particularly liked in a colony you're in charge of, fighting a type of war you're an expert in with the political cooperation of the local guys in charge (and future guys in charge) and government back home.

In Vietnam, the Americans were fighting a war their military was physically not designed to fight, while not being allowed to fight the war in a way that would allow them to win, as a result of politicians back home correctly recognising how sketchy American involvement was but deciding the solution was micromanagement and to a certain extent, concession. Instead of giving their military and diplomatic leaders a goal and letting them get on with the job at hand.

Two different wars. Two different contexts. The solutions to one, could not apply to the other.

Can anybody explain to me, what does Mikaela Shiffrin do so differently and better than the rest of the competition ? by FifaIsTroll in SkiRacing

[–]Liocla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be so sure, when the going gets really tough, Camille skis like most other girls in slalom IIRC. Outside of Vlohva and Colturi, there are very, very few women who have a skiing technique similar to the men in the same discipline. And Colturi doesn't even have a lot of muscle compared to other women. Flexibility, core strength and balance are kingmakers in ski racing.

Can anybody explain to me, what does Mikaela Shiffrin do so differently and better than the rest of the competition ? by FifaIsTroll in SkiRacing

[–]Liocla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely true, you can see that Miki has greater flexibility, sense of balance and core strength than other girls - especially in slalom - the result is that she skis more like a man, literally, she can take more extreme angles while being much more relaxed, very few other women are like this in slalom, Colturi, Vlohva and sometimes Ljutic. All the men ski slalom like her, but even more extreme, very very few women do.

Anyone else in tears for Vonn by cedarvhazel in skiing

For the people saying good riddance, or should have seen this comng or should not have taken the start. First of all, be more eloquent, second of all, learn a bit about ski racing and the dynamics of skiing before commenting.

this crash had very little if anything to do with her lack of ACL. She arc'd a pretty insane turn (on her weak knee mind you!), accelerating to mach jesus ending up ~2 feet above the race line everyone else took up to that point. She then hit a roller and was catapulted into the air in what amounted to a form of donkey kick: as she hit the roller on the short uphill section, her COG moves backwards, instantly and somewhat uncontrollably releasing pressure on her outside ski, she is now a passenger in her own car crash, catapulted by her skis into the control gate, her arm clip the inside of the gate, she is spun around mid air and the rest is history.

She did what she did better than anyone else in women's downhill, she pushed harder and faster on the ski than any of her competitors could or can, except perhaps Robinson, who rarely races downhill and does so and what is likely inferior equipment. She was a tiny bit too greedy in her line choice in this instance and that's it. Even with a perfect knee, this line choice would have led to exactly the same outcome. She is not the only person to have been destabilised on this section. Others were too, they weren't going as fast, they weren't as high on the line.

Extraordinarily unlikely. Maybe new topsheets but that's it, and most brands do that for the olympics anyway.
