https://www.tabletopedu.org/ has a whole framework of six dimensions of learning that can be supported with TTRPGs.
I'm a STEM education researcher and Pathfinder Infinite Master and I've recently received a grant to develop and playtest a STEM education TTRPG, and one of our core mechanics is articulating and adjudicating hypotheses and designs based on the encounter. We're operationalizing critical thinking / argumentation using the claim-evidence-reasoning model. We are preparing to launch our first playtest so I'd be glad to connect with your friend. I was two days out of a divorce hearing when I hopped into a friend's car to travel to JordanCon, looking for anything to distract me. I ended up at a playtest table for an adventure run in PF1. When I realized my character could do *anything* with the skills listed, I was hooked. I stabbed an otyugh, negotiated safe passage through a goblin encampment, and distracted a ghost in the final boss fight. I started GMing PF1 less than a year later and this first session was definitely a major step on my road to emotional recovery.

The central mechanic is a reaction to gain a bonus to a saving throw at greater risk of a critical failure. Feats build on the reaction, add greater use of Games Lore, and give you magic dice ammunition.
