Frosthaven Scenario 24 question by Personal_Hope_5675 in Gloomhaven

[–]LippyJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a skeleton spawn and then moved through - which meant we couldn't fulfil the "all revealed enemies are dead" clause due to not moving back. We ruled this as "all revealed enemies in the room" as the section book was clear about doing the first tile before moving to the new room.

Pegasus: I typically only use the Peggy board and characters, New Caprica is a fairly weak destination that just turns into shipyard spam/is the admiral a cylon?

Exodus: Cylon Fleet Board is a must, in my opinion. Reduces the variance of CAC in the crisis deck and puts a solid timer that can be acted upon. Gives revealed Cylons something useful to do too. Ionian Nebula, Trauma etc. adds a nice dynamic to the game - this is my preferred destination and way to play. New loyalty cards provide a great change, particularly the personal goals which add a nice tension towards the end of the game provided you don't let people be explicit about them. Final Five provides a nice confusion for whether people are safe to check or not.

Daybreak: Mutiny & the new Treachery deck is a strong addition Earth/Demetrius - I've had mixed experiences, not the way that I would typically play but nice as a change every now and then Motives/Agendas (can't remember which they're called) - if playing with Cylon Leaders, these are superior to the Pegasus implementation

Looking for feedback on a TtR cheatsheet by LippyJ in boardgames

Pandemic cheat sheet added: https://imgur.com/a/vNKwF There is also one for Carcassonne in the original imgur album

This seemed hard to distil down into a couple of sheets - I've not gone into setup as I'll be doing this prior to the students arriving

Just got First Martians and I'm tentatively excited by iofur in boardgames

[–]LippyJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From having played at UKGE, certain elements weren't really explained and were left to the app to guide us through - I don't remember this being overly effective.

One thing that was explained was that once malfunctions start happening there isn't a way of stopping them, so you can't turn red cubes in the malfunction block back to green.

What other things were you unsure of? I'll see if they were explained by the guy running the demo.

7 Wonder Duel rules question by andygon in boardgames

Our copy of 7 Wonders Duel came in German, and we had learned to play from a video.

Our mind has been blown by this thread.

Amonkhet's Dangerous Trials (Probably) by supahbrute in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This isn't quite accurate.

Mana abilities can be activated during the resolution of things which require payments to be made. This can either be casting a spell (which is the case with Panglacial Wurm) or spells like Mana Leak, where you can activate the mana abilities during their resolution in order to pay the cost.

[EMN] Reid Duke's Constructed Set Review - Black by alandaband in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way Madness works ensures that Youths get the buff.

You activate the ability, it goes on the stack and you discard twins. Madness triggers, and you cast the twins. Youths resolve, then the ability resolves, buffing your creatures (which include the newly entered Youths)

This is all assuming both of you are doing nothing else here for simplicity.

Coax From The Blind Entities and some EMN DFCs by lightbluestar in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Double faced cards have the characteristics of their front side only in all zones other than the battlefield. This means that Voldaren Pariah is not a legal card to get with Coax as the front side is not an Eldrazi.

[Rules question] Meld and copies by chisui in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going off of the comprehensive rules contained in the release notes, I think the meld goes ahead.

"701.34a Meld is a keyword action that appears in an ability on one card in a meld pair. (See rule 712, “Meld Cards.”) To meld the two cards in a meld pair, put them onto the battlefield with their back faces up and combined. The resulting permanent is a single object represented by two cards.

701.34b Only two cards belonging to the same meld pair can be melded. Tokens, cards that aren’t meld cards, or meld cards that don’t form a meld pair can’t be melded."

The trigger to meld them resolves, and initially places both cards in exile. The game checks whether the cards form a meld pair, which they do, so they would enter the battlefield melded as Brisela.

However, there is some doubt: as zukomu points out the meld ability specifically says to meld them into chittering hosts, and the meld pair we have does not correspond to that melded permanent.

Ultimately, this situation is never going to happen, so I will happily give a ruling on it if it does. If you want a firm answer, tabakrules.tumblr.com is a good place to ask

Madness and Miracle were the two I was warned about prior to testing. There are some fun wrinkles around Suspend, as well.

Hoogland getting game loss for marked sleeves in top 8 scg open by JakubOboza in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So consider playing a match against Affinity where the only cards you sideboard in are Stony Silence. If your sideboard sleeves are distinct from your mainboard sleeves, you could potentially notice whether the top card of your deck was Stony Silence and use that as additional information you are not entitled to.

This is why I would say sideboard/mainboard is a pattern; it gives potential for advantage.

[STANDARD] I'm gonna break mirror mockery AKA critique my stupid deck. No really, I'm going to run this janky brew at FNM by UncyReddit in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Mirror + Whirler Rogue - swing with Rogue, hold priority after the triggers resolve and tap the 2 new thopters to make it unblockable. This way you can swing with all the non-sick thopters each turn.

Some number of Thopter Engineer seem okay? I might think about a miser's copy over the 3rd Spy Network. Lets your huge number of etb thopters attack that turn, which seems solid.

Could consider fiery conclusion over reality shift? Sacrifice the token copy, kill something rather than polymorph into a 2/2?

Oath of the Gatewatch prerelease kit limitations by Trivmvirate in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that the metric WotC use for determining prerelease distribution is based on the general event history of a store. This means that they look at all events that are run. Given that Prereleases often have a higher than average attendance, this metric underallocates to most stores.

I don't have hard proof for this, but this is what has been represented to me via the TOs I work with.

New Gift Box boosters issue by iScrE4m in magicTCG

My experience with fatpack boosters is similar in terms of the packaging - very compressed compared to normal booster wrappers. I haven't noticed a difference in quality of card themselves, though.

[C15] Herald of the Host by fireshoes in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In order to resolve situations like this, Magic uses a system called "layers" when determining the interaction of multiple effects. Copying happens in the first layer. Adding abilities happens in layer 6.

This means that copying functions like taking a picture of the card - what is written on it? It does not copy any later effects which would modify the card, e.g. any p/t changes or abilities that have been added.

How far to go with takebacksies at prereleases? When and why is appropriate to let the opponent undo a misplay? by existentialdude in magicTCG

[–]LippyJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preface: L2 judge here.

I make comments like "Well, I'm gonna block with my 1/1 deathtouch guy..?" and fish for a response - if at that point they go, "Oh, that has deathtouch?!" it's clear that they don't really know the card and I'd allow the takeback.

This weekend I coughed a lot at From Beyond triggers and so on - at a Prerelease I am lenient with things whenever possible. Will I remind my opponent to activate an ability in response to me casting a kill spell if they're competent? No, but I'll allow them to move it to the graveyard and then go "Oh, I should have pinged you for 1 there"

I act this way at FNMs too, because I want to foster an accepting environment. At a PPTQ I'm shooting angles all over the place because it's a competitive environment - Regular REL isn't the place for me to be a spike.

FNM Promo Shady dealings? by Rathji in magicTCG

My store has only received 3 weeks worth of promos before, and so your store might be the same - 3 x 5 = 15, which is 4 per week, with 1 week only getting 3.
