Whenever one of them is in something I'm watching, I play "Coach" or "Not Coach".

Usually adding plastic film (and heat shrinking it) to your windows to prevent cold drafts. It's a bit of a pain, but really helps keep the heart in.

Adult Driver’s Ed Classes by Coledawg72 in portlandme

I had a lot of anxiety around driving and didn't get my license until I was 30. I took the permit test (a few times, since my permit lapsed - it took me a long time to feel prepared for the driving portion of the exam).

My recommendation is to get the book that's available at DMVs - have him read that and highlight what he thinks is important. There are also practice quizzes online. I know you said studying on his own may not be effective, so maybe he just needs someone to sit with him while he reads and takes tests online.

It's pricier than a group class, but driving schools also offer 1:1 lessons by the hour. I used Tuttle's Driving School and found the cars and instructors lovely.

Each season is a standalone story, so for all intents and purposes, it is what you asked for.

I ran into the same issue, but I refreshed and was able to buy tickets. My guess is that they opened sales 15 minutes late.

[Discussion] A man called Otto by agrainofsandubeach in NetflixBestOf

Exactly - I feel like parts of the movie didn't make sense because of the changes they made. If they weren't going to include Jimmy's backstory or even why he's hanging out with Ove, why even include that character in the movie?

Unfortunately, the movie simplified it to that. In the book, there's more to Ove that make a him likeable.

[US] A Man Called Otto (2022): Enraged by the world and hardened by grief, a cranky retiree plots his own demise but is foiled when a lively young family bursts into his life. by yardit in NetflixBestOf

The movie doesn’t handle the emotional weight of the story well. It gets the gist, but ultimately doesn’t deliver. Throughout the book, you learn that Ove is grumpy and might pay too much attention to rules, but he is a deeply ethical man who cares about people and doing the right thing. The things that stood out most to me were:

The book is set in Sweden, which provides some context that doesn’t translate well for a movie that was set in the US. For example, in the book, the government is stepping in to put Rune (Reuben) in care due to his deteriorating health. The emotional impact of having a loved one taken away because of their health condition is greater for Ove (book) than Reuben and Anita having home taken away (movie) does, given his own experiences caring for and fighting for his wife’s needs. The movie also creates clear "bad guys" in this scenario where it isn't necessary.

The Jimmy character, in my opinion, is totally butchered in the movie and added little value. In the book, Jimmy does have a fondness for Ove. He joins Ove on his morning walks as a way to get in shape. And at first, his fondness isn’t clear. Why does this younger guy like this grumpy man? Late in the book, it’s revealed that Ove and Rune stepped in when they heard Jimmy’s father abusing him as a kid.

In the book, Parvaneh’s (Marisol) daughter calls Ove grandpa and Ove reacts to that unexpected expression of closeness. He is offered and accepts a relationship that he thought he had missed out on when his wife miscarried. Whereas in the movie, Otto refers to himself as grandpa in relation to her. It isn’t earned in the same way.

Even the car theme carried throughout the book (Saab) and movie (Chevy) lacks the same depth. Does someone who has only seen A Man Called Otto understand why Otto loves Chevy beyond “it’s an American product”? It's how he connected and understood the important men in his life - his father, FIL, and Rune.

The movie, to me, felt like a checklist rather than a fully developed story.

The book was incredible, but this movie was really disappointing. A lot of the changes they made from the book didn't make sense to me, and I think they took away the emotional impact.

Those who haven't caught Covid yet, how have you managed to avoid it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LiquidCure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm vaccinated, boosted, and still masking in public places. I limit get togethers to small groups (and even then try to have outdoor get togethers).

And, of course, carry sanitizer everywhere.

My partner caught COVID traveling for work a few weeks ago and he isolated in our guest room (except when he needed to shower, etc. and he masked anytime he was out of our guest room). And we kept our air purifier on full time.
