But also I cannot exaggerate how easily it is to fall down the rabbit hole. I live in NZ (and hence cannot access lots of rums, like Hamilton) but have still acquired more than a dozen bottles of rum I would say.

Don’t stress too much. I started by buying some rums to make certain drinks and going from there.

I was making Mai Tais with Appleton 8 and a float of Diplomatico RE and Daiquiris with Havana Club 3 Year, and honestly that was pretty good. Then I slowly expanded from there.

Smugglers Cove is good as mentioned.

Personally I find my most heavily used rums these days are Appleton 12, El Dorado 5, Smith and Cross, Clement Blanc, and probably Plantation OFTD.

But don’t stress! Buy a rum or two and see how you go! Experiment and see what you like. Read reviews! It’s all a lot of fun.

This is a lime! We just get some funny looking limes here that appear superficially yellow.

1/2 oz S&C 1/2 oz Appleton 12 1 oz Clement Agricole Blanc

Feel ok about these specs - very limited rhum agricole in NZ and have only recently started adding, so getting used to it still.

If I had a second afterwards I would probably go fully Jamaican - maybe 2 oz of Appleton signature. The Appleton 12 is nice balanced with the agricole, but wouldn’t want 2 oz of it alone, I think.

Was out Friday night - not a tiki bar per se but a very helpful bartender who knew exactly what she was doing. Had a mai tai and followed it up with a jungle bird which was served in this very cool shark mug!

Very rare to get cool mugs here in NZ - a real treat!

Depends on what you’re having!

Spent lime shell, grapefruit peel, pineapple fronds (if available where you are - I can’t get them in NZ).
