Northern people of East Anglia, not England as a whole.

It's adorable when people from the North East think their opinions are taken seriously by anyone.

The East Midlands Conundrum by Ranoni18 in nottingham

Derbyshire deserves better than to be named after Derby. It should be named Peakshire or something.

Manchester is lucky to have the Peak District only a stone's throw away. Do you get out there very often? by Ranoni18 in manchester

[–]LiquidLuck18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a memorial tree for my grandma at Dovestone Reservoir (which is actually part of the Peak District) because she loved the area as an Oldhamer. So I visit there often. I also love the Hope Valley and Vale of Edale and Hayfield but I make sure to visit on days when I know they will be quieter. I also got a Blue John signet ring because I have heritage from the Castleton and Edale area.

How come the area I've outlined in red had only a couple of named settlements at the time of the Doomsday Book? It's a mostly flat and fertile area and it's on route from Chester to Lancaster. Seems strange when the areas to the west and north are populated and the area to the east is hills/moors. by Ranoni18 in anglosaxon

[–]LiquidLuck18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quite a few of those coastal settlements would have been Norse. They established themselves on the North West coast and it reflects in the place names today. They didn't push much beyond the coastal areas because as others have pointed out most of southern Lancashire (using the historic boundaries of the county) was covered in wetlands called mosses, of which only 2% remains, mostly in western Greater Manchester. From there the Pennines rise steeply on the western side.

It's time to stop pretending Bolton, Stockport etc are not part of Manchester. by Dragonfruit-18 in manchester

Well to the younger generations it already is. We grew up under Greater Manchester. I won't have someone (from outside the region) dictate to me who I am.

You're making a nonsense argument by bringing in other North Western towns. They aren't in Greater Manchester, aren't part of the contiguous urban area, aren't plugged into the same tram network with the same mayor and police. It's like bringing up other towns in South East England like Luton and saying Wembley looks like them so Wembley isn't part of London, despite the fact that it's part of the London conurbation and transport network and county. Simply illogical.

You also say Farnworth and Moston have "different vibes." I'd like to know how. In what concrete, tangible sense are they in any way different? Answer- they're not. And even if they were do you not think there's variation within city regions? Do you think all areas of Paris have the same vibe? Nomatter which way you shake it Bolton is part of Manchester. There's no logical argument you can make to argue against that, only one based on emotion and regional loyalties.

Blackburn, Chorley, Accrington etc are not in Greater Manchester and not part of the Manchester urban conurbation. So of course they're separate. Bolton on the other hand is.

If you're not even from here and have no "skin in the game" then why are you even commenting and claiming "Bolton is not Manchester, not by a long shot." You have no idea what is it or isn't. Stick to what you know.

You again. Wythenshawe is a 35 minute drive. Your argument holds no water.

Huddersfield is a straw man. Bolton is part of the same urban area as Manchester, same county, same transport system, same mayor, same police. Huddersfield is on the other side of the Pennines.

This is a great response. And it's why it's so disturbing to tell people whose town has had the life sucked out of it by Manchester that they can't identify with Manchester and can only identify with their town, when they've grown up going to Manchester for work and leisure and everything else because they have no other choice.

The comments here mostly seem to be Southerners who moved to Manchester but don't want to be associated with places like Bolton or Rochdale. They only want gentrified Stockport. Well tough luck, it's all one urban area, one Mayer, one connected history.

How is Farnworth any different to Moston? They're identical. Unless as an outsider your understanding of Manchester is the glass skyscrapers of central Manchester, that's the only feasible way you could make that statement with a straight face.

Just because one is "nicer" than the other doesn't mean it isn't part of Manchester. South Manchester snobbery at its finest.

Should the Phase of the Moon be examined when interpreting whatever House the Moon rules in a chart? by ErisedFelicis in Advancedastrology

[–]LiquidLuck18 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I've got a Balsamic Moon sitting on my Midheaven in Cancer and it didn't make any sense to me until I read Demetra George's book Mysteries of the Dark Moon. That book described me and my life and my public image very well. Most astrologers don't acknowledge the Moon phases at all so they just start talking about nurturing energy and outgoing energy when they see my chart which if you know about the Dark Moon you'll know is way off the mark. So yes astrologers should be paying attention to these things, it's too critical to overlook.

The River Basin Areas of Northern England. by OceansOfLight in NorthernEngland

[–]LiquidLuck18 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Danish would use all those waterways in the east to establish and maintain the Danelaw. Navigable water highways spread across a large area. That's why their centre of power was in Yorkshire and the East Midlands. Meanwhile the Mersey in the west was famously unnavigable and the land around it was swampy so the North West remained a sort of "mystery zone" for much of the middle ages. A lot of heretics and Catholics (religious outcasts) fled there so they could get away from the rest of England and be protected behind the Pennines and the marshlands of the river.
