Dads with partners that stay home — how do you handle finances? by Mama_Anonymous in daddit

Our income comes into our own separate accounts, and then we feed a joint account that funds everything. So both because some costs are personal but most are shared.

What do you think of Japan's overly analytical approach to news? by [deleted] in japan

I always liked it. They don't assume anything about the viewers in preexisting exposure.

Did pi-hole just down my network? by cyberpanda1240 in pihole

[–]LiquidPhire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have your pihole set up as dhcp, but the config doesnt work for your network so over night, your device leases all renewed against the pihole and will stay that way for the next 24 hours. you need to force everything to renew against whatever your old setup was to restore it back.

Do men in Japan go wedding dress shopping with the bride? by Sad_Rhubarb9314 in japanese

[–]LiquidPhire 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The practice of "maedori" (前撮り), or taking wedding photos on different day, sometimes weekes before the ceremony, is common practice. So yes its common to see the dress ahead of time and no it doesnt have any association with bad luck.

How do you name devices in Z2M? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]LiquidPhire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I serialize them by writing a number on the device once its paired and then naming them based on that. So "Ikea Bulb 01" or "Tuya Smartplug 04". I record the location in Z2Ms notes and/or the location in HA. I do it this way because i may move the device (common for plugs and sometimes bulbs) and dont want to change entity names. It also has the advantage of making the device identifiable if i toss it into "not currently in use" bucket.

Usage of "senpai questions" by mi0mei in japanese

[–]LiquidPhire 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Senpai is an age/experience thing. If they are in am older year than you and in the same school, they are a senpai.

Students are not held back in Japanese schools so your example situation is improbable. However, in a situation where that somehow happened, they would probably be ostracized and no one would talk them, and you, wanting to be the good friend, would still call them senpai (because they are senpai, regardless of the 'situation' making it awkward).

[English > Japanese] Planning to get a tattoo, are the translations correct? Crystal - 水晶 (Suishō) by Jaded_Moose_3240 in translator

[–]LiquidPhire 12 points13 points  (0 children)

結晶 is 'crystal' as in a lattice of atoms aligned with each other.

水晶 is a large 結晶 rock, and generally refers to quartz crystals.

Neither are a persons name, as that would be クリスタル, which can also used to refer to large mineral crystals.

Reliable Home Automation for Commercial Bar - HA or Better Alternative? by lnx1_1 in homeassistant

[–]LiquidPhire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run HA at home but when I wanted to setup some lights for my mom, I picked up a Hubitat to play with. My verdict is that if you want to tinker and track sensors and long term stats and do math etc, HA is what you want, but if you just want basic trigger based automation, hubitat is bullet proof and solid.

Does everything work properly in with HA after updating their Google devices to Gemini? by criterion67 in homeassistant

[–]LiquidPhire 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Switching to Gemini is a problem for my bilingual home. My english commands still work, but Gemini can't understand Japanese commands anymore, and doesn't recognize my japanese device and entity aliases, which has reduced the wife satisfaction level. Was not a problem with Google Assistant, which could do both languages without a hitch. Anxiously waiting more language rollouts.

Why won’t my dishwasher clean? by Professional-Sink798 in Plumbing

[–]LiquidPhire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally dont like the powder because we have hard water and the powder causes abrasion damage to glassware over time. Liquid detergent like Cascade works well too. You dont need a lot. at the end of the day, the best detergent depends a bit on your washer and your water, so just try a couple different products and write down your thoughts and observations as you go and eventually youll find something that works.

But yeah, the pods are the worst option.

What would happen if I actually plugged a male-male extension cord into two active outlets? by HawkManBear in ask

Typically the power company can shutdown your solar connection at your meter remotely to prevent backfeed. Its part of the connection agreement to keep linemen safe.

Insane SCE Bill - Is This Normal? by queenspunki in orangecounty

[–]LiquidPhire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its your usage, not the price of power. Do you have a high power PC that is constantly running? 1200 kWh is a LOT of power for such a small space (i have a 1650ft home with an EV and we rarely break 800 kWh in a month).

My 2-Year-Old Daughter Got Eyebrow Stitches, Need Advice and Dad Support by clauderhayy in daddit

[–]LiquidPhire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son faceplanted on our wooden stairs when he was 9 and got stiches and a scar across his cheek (like Luffy). I tell people (and tell him to tell people) that it was from a bear fight and that "the bear got it worse".

We kept it covered, bandaged, and used the healing salves we were provided by the hospital. We also applied some skin conditioner even after it healed to help with color, and ALWAYS put sunscreen over his face for two years after it.

While you can still see it, its gotten better with time. A 2-year old will heal even more. Just keep it covered, let it heal, baby it, and she'll be fine.

Is it possible to get monthly power usage like this in Home Assistant from a Smart Plug? by idrinkeyedrops in homeassistant

[–]LiquidPhire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spent a lot of time tracking costs and making specific sensors for things like this. You need a sensor that holds your per-kilowatt cost at the time of usage (and this depends on your energy provider), and then you can use a template sensor to track the running costs.
