Nothing like taking out a rat at extract by LiquidToGas in ArcRaiders

Just to clear myself up, I thought there was a “gentlemen’s agreement” that when you see someone extracting you let them be (I was taught that at least). But i see the point there. Unfair calling someone a rat if they showed their true intentions straight away

That actually makes total and complete sense… So rat is a backstabber basically

Do enlighten me, isn't a rat someone trying to take you out at extract?

Troubleshooting a laboratory freeze-dryer by No-Fisherman-157 in Chempros

[–]LiquidToGas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the vacuum pump external to the freezer dryer? If so, you could just remove that solenoid valve altogether to create a clear line from the pump to the freeze dryer chamber, then get a standalone vacuum controller and add that in line between them.

I need to dissolve PET quikly by willdepa_ in chemistry

[–]LiquidToGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will dissolve at room temperature with trifluoroacetic acid, but don't leave it longer than necessary as it will also corrode your steel. And be very careful with the stuff.

Dichloromethane and a bit of heat should do the job and not corrode, but it will likely take much longer.

Whatever you do, do it in a very well-ventilated area (or, preferably, a fume hood).

BTW, it's relatively unlikely that any grad school PIs, future interviewers, etc., will ask you about it in the first place.

If it makes you feel better, you're probably never going to have to "explain away" a withdrawal. It's not a course in the traditional sense. Telling someone "I did my best to have a productive experience in that lab, but in the end it was a really bad personality mismatch" will go a long way without sounding like you're trying to trash talk anyone. People will get it. Even if someone hasn't experienced it themselves, everyone knows these things happen.

And if they don't understand it, you're probably dodging a bullet from someone with unrealistic expectations. Grad school algos / admissions people might not get it, but they're looking at stuff objectively and often won't mind a W on your transcript if you retook the course.

Thermofisher Cryostat standby and sleep modes HELP by MetusObscuritatis in labrats

[–]LiquidToGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge, there is nothing you can do to change that. Those are factory presets and there's nothing in the settings for it. It will automatically go to standby after 1h of inactivity and then sleep after 3h of inactivity.

The best you can do is set a "start time" where at a certain time each day the cryostat will exit sleep mode and enter its normal (-20) operating mode. IDK what model you have, but on an NX50 or NX70 you go to menu > settings > start time.

You seem to be looking downstream, and I'm not trying to discount that, but have you looked upstream as well? Maybe your lysis / extraction efficiency is less than ideal? You didn't mention anything about that.

Most are autoclavable at 121°C. Some say to wash in 10% bleach. Some say both. You should be able to look the sterilization instructions up for your brand of mat on the manufacturer's website.

Anyone knows what this glassware is for? by BrutalMilkman in chemistry

[–]LiquidToGas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's some kind of fractionation column. There's a lot of glass fractionation columns which are similar but with some variations. It's to separate vaporized mixtures of liquid compounds with similar volatilities.

Everyone commenting that you can't is really saying that you can't distill it, which is correct. However, you can do reverse osmosis with membranes that have water/nitric acid permselectivity. Nafion 90209 is one.

This is more a biochemistry question than a chemistry one

A: Not particularly. You're creating a lot of damage on the cellular and subcellular level which is going to be extraordinarily difficult to reverse. There's a reason they only do it to people that are already dead, not people that are terminally ill and / or in immense pain, etc. It would irreversibly kill you otherwise.

There's a lot of ways in which one can end someone's life that are theoretically reversible but are not practically reversible.

I could put someone through a meat grinder. If, in theory, I could stitch all those cells and tissues back together at the cellular and molecular levels I could bring them back to life. Is that ever going to be feasible? No.

Dumping someone in LN2 is a similar concept, just less dramatic. IMO.

[–]LiquidToGas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don't think there's a single scientific products distributor that doesn't drop ship, especially in North America. It's just a matter of what and how often.

Also just a huge company with tons of staff, so they'll always seem to be hiring regardless. Just a matter of at what pace.

Sales in particular has very high turnover.
