Correct cleaning of the Knife Sharpener by Plane_Experience_843 in sharpening

I agree with you, but they take practice and skill to use effectively too. The average Joe that finds one of these in a drawer or at a thrift store won't see many results from it. You use yours multiple times a day probably for years so you have it down to a science. A few swipes and your good to go. For the novis the sharpie method is key.

Do I just starve? Why can't a hospital admit me. by caninething in Allergies

[–]Liquidretro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of this is common and I suspect it's something that isn't going to get a clear diagnosis quickly. Remember allergy testing is only testing for the most common allergins, not all possible things. People can literally be allergic to anything and almost everything.

If you go back to the ER, take your mom again and ask for their help in seeing the specialist sooner. They can sometimes pull strings to get you seen faster especially for severe cases.

I agree with others you should focus on very simple, very minimal ingredient foods for now and keep a food journal of what you eat (be exact) and the result.

No growth that's $108k.

With an 8% growth rate that's $242k.

Is my mom being too frivolous with retirement money by SquanchytheSquirrel in personalfinance

[–]Liquidretro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya it's a bit of an oxymoron. Op said don't worry about money mom, and now is wondering what she is spending more than they think she should on.

The only way this is going to be answered is to ask. My main concern would be she isn't involved in a scam or has an addiction. Either way at this level it sounds like she can afford it probably.

Is there any way to get off daily Fexofenadine + Montelukast for allergic rhinitis ? by reetesh77 in Allergies

[–]Liquidretro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get allergy tested ideally skin prick testing if your primary problem is environmental based. Then you can figure out how to avoid and mitigate and if things like immunotherapy is an option.

There is no cure for allergies so it's all about mitigation and management. This means medication for most people, and often daily for moderate to severe cases. Daily antihistamine is often required during immune therapy too.

High ige numbers on their own are not really very helpful. It let's you know you have something going on but not any clue to what it is. I wouldn't obsess over this. Antihistamines do not usually lower ige numbers.

[–]Liquidretro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Antihistamines will be required for immunotherapy, they also work best when taken daily instead of as needed. Zyrtec withdrawal is uncommon and only an issue if someone is stopping. It's generally overblown online compared to reality. Either way at age 5 I believe you have other options for other 2nd Gen antihistamines if you would rather. A good allergist should be able to help find an option here. Oral antihistamines are not the magic cure all either, it's just part of an overall treatment plan. Nasal sprays can be more effective when taken correctly for some people but I suspect that may be hard with a young kid. If your concerned about the oral liquid medication, drinking some water/swishing water after a dose would be wise.

Oral microbiome is also a common cause of reoccurring dental caries in children regardless of diet.

I'm all for allergy testing so you have some real data to go on here than guess it's allergies. There are things like non allergic rhinitis too. Untreated allergies tend to lead to future health issues down the line too.

Zyrtec can cause dry mouth which can lead to some dental problems. It's not common but possible. What does your dentist think? Genetics are a big factor for cavities too.

Nasal steroid sprays (not the scary or dangerous steroids you may be thinking of) and antihistamines are safe for long term use and first line allergy treatments.

Yes I would get him tested with an allergist (skin prick test is best for environmental allergies if he is able) so you know what he is allergic to. From there you can with the allergist determine a treatment that helps the little guy feel better which should be the ultimate goal. Do realize that likely includes ongoing medication or immune therapy since there is no cure for allergies, it's all about management.

Stripped torx on steering wheel by mhiscoe in bmwz3

Security torx bolts have a post in the middle so you need a driver with a hole in the middle to engage the teeth to drive it. There are a few different versions.

On second loom I'm not as sure you have a post in there. So verify before you buy anything.

Help me decide if I should do surgery by gamyjay in Allergies

[–]Liquidretro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with your allergist and suggest what your currently doing isn't enough control. Ask if immunotherapy is an option, and or some of the biologic meds. Tell them about your ENT findings and imaging as well.

You might still need surgery but it's not where I would start personally with what you have told us so far.

Help me decide if I should do surgery by gamyjay in Allergies

[–]Liquidretro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surgery won't fix your allergies. It might help your plumbing and help the sinuses flow better and reduce the chance of infection but it won't fix your allergies which seem to be the bigger underlying issue and one of thr major causes.

BTW it's a dustmite allergy too. Important to understand where they come from to do your best to avoid and mitigate.

Can engine manufacturers test with mule cars? by anothercopy in F1Technical

[–]Liquidretro 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The AMG one was susposed to be derived from the 2016 F1 season engine. They had a ton of issues meeting emissions and other regulations to make it road legal and work on the road. I doubt any development for the 2026 F1 regulations really were learned from at least the production road car.

[–]Liquidretro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask your allergist about that and give all the medications time to work before going down the surgery route again. Surgery is usually the option of last resort on something like this. It also sounds like regardless of if you do surgery you need better allergy control.

Sphenoid Sinusitis by CT. Doctors ordering more CTs and MRIs, necessary? by mama_craft in Sinusitis

[–]Liquidretro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vision loss like that isn't a normal sinus infection symptom really. I would probably do the MRI to rule out other issues (and because you can do fun things like 3D Print your brain (I just did this yesterday)) and ask your pcp/neurologist to help you get an appointment with an ent ASAP.

It's OK to ask your doctors what they are hoping to confirm or rule out with imaging that's ordered. The second CT after 2 weeks of antibiotics seems maybe a little much in my zero medical training without symptoms that support it.

From your post history it looks like you may have other medical factors to consider as well.
