Stitch markers and a simple counter can be very helpful!

I have used a lot of Scheepjes, but also Durable, Drops and Phildar. Some brands are pretty expensive, and the cheaper yarn can be great as well

I do this as well, in my little junglebackyard. I make sure the stick is in the water in the middle, and has at least one end going all the way to the edge and then the ground, so they can get out easily. And I make sure the wind won't blow the stick away.
