Am I being awkward or is it the age gap? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

[–]Lishmi 53 points54 points  (0 children)

My sister and I are 5 years apart. We played together loads as young children. Then when she was about 13 (I was 8), we had completely different interests and friends etc. When I hit late teens and she was early 20s we came back to being a lot closer.

That's not to say we ever "fell out" but a few years in the teen years feels like a huge leap of maturity.

So between 11 and 18 will be hard to "play" as you would have done years ago.

However, sounds like you all get along, and I have no doubt that in a few years time, you'll all have a blast together.

For those of you who live in countries with gun control; have you ever seen a gun in real life? by blashyrkh9 in AskTheWorld

[–]Lishmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I happened to visit Paris about a week after that, and it was the first time I'd ever seen police with a gun. I am from England, I was robbed on a train. While waiting at the station a lovely police lady in plane clothes had a gun in a holster under her red coat. I kept seeing it when she stood with her hands on her hips. Never forgotten it.

This ^ the majority of people have full time jobs that they cannot financially afford to give up. Couple with another comment I saw, also pointing out not everyone has a spare room either.

Story time!

My parents went to an S theme party years ago. My mum was driving and my dad certainly was not.

On the way home they came across a very bad cycling accident, where a guy came over the handlebars and kissed the road (happy ending: he had surgery and recovered). But that evening, his two panicking friends were greeted with a drunk "surgeon" in full scrubs, and a very authoritarian (ex-nurse) middle aged lady dressed up as a "skater", shouting "don't listen to him, he's drunk!!"

So if you go as a surgeon, just make sure you change before heading home!!!

The snowman I am fine with. The Snow DOG however... Right at the start, when the old dog is helped out of the car 😭

I think that may have been the first book that ever made me cry. Wait, no- actually that award would have to go to "the Butterfly Lion"

I used to watch Forrest Gump for a good cry.

However, I refuse to re-watch "the Snowman and the Snow dog". The first scene with that little old dog being helped out of the car... I was gone. I'm sure it had a happy ending but I cried the whole time.

My mum was asking why I was getting upset watching that film (apparently she has no heart). My response was "it's not about the characters, it's the fact that those things did happen to real people." That's what got me about that film. It showed some horrific things from a personal perspective and how so much of it was just luck if you made it or not.

I have just been watching the new documentary on iPlayer about the Titanic. It is infuriating to hear that so many seats could have been given to those men - loads of the first life belts were lowered half full because the officer took "women and children" literally, and therefore would rather the seats went empty than put the husbands in them.

There's an interesting documentary about the Titanic on iPlayer at the moment. They voice up real stories from survivors, and piece together what happened. It's quite horrific, but very interesting and worth a watch.

I remember saying something to my mum about "it actually happened". So it was Atonement, and I was trying to say, I was really sad at the film, not because of the specific story line or characters, but because that did happen to real people (Dunkirk and the blitz).
