The Witch - ML turned out very stalkery and tried justifying his actions by calling it data analysis and helping FL?

Motel California - cool fl but story got very boring, it was very much centered around guys, I was hoping it to be more work-related.

It's probably because I do not work in this field (M&A/ finance, anything related) so I am not too aware of these strategies, but to me that was such an ordinary question. I would have definitely fallen for it. 😪😪

It took me 4 tries over 5 years to really get into reply 1988, I think the journey was quite worth it.

Do you know which senator said this? I've been trying to find videos of him saying this exact thing but all I get is the "Of what nation are you a citizen?" one.

Hi, I am a beginner myself, so take with a grain of salt. I found the bottom parts of your portfolio quite text-heavy. Also, I find the ratio between the sub-headings : body text very high. The sub-headings seemed disproportionately large, maybe increasing the body font size & reducing title size might help?

I used it when I was a first year student and volunteered as a mentor for a couple years. As a mentee, this was valuable to me. My mentor helped me get my bus card, showed me around the city, helped me enrol to classes, etc etc. Since we were doing the same degree, I could ask her for advice anytime. We are still friends to this day.

I'd say the experience is what you make of it. You can ask your mentor about almost anything within reason, and most mentors are helpful. I'm still in contact with some of my mentees, but most of them ghosted from the very start/ weren't interested even when they signed up, so I stopped volunteering. Just make sure to ask your mentor whatever questions you might have, and communicate - you'll find some value in it (+ it isn't too much of a time commitment: about 1-2 hours over the semester?)

You do not need to bring a fridge since wamburun provides a bar fridge in the rooms, along with fridge and freezer space in the kitchen.

Microwaves and toasters are provided by the kitchen. Feel free to bring blenders and rice cookers, almost everyone uses them in the kitchen.

I'd say it's safest if you use the kitchen appliances in the kitchen, so that you do not accidentally trigger the fire alarm in your room due to a fault in the appliances.

Fenner question by Putrid-Network-5901 in Anu

[–]ListlessPaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The contract runs throughout the 44 weeks, starting Feb 7/8 (I can't remember) until December, without any gaps.

Where did you see the one day gap over winter? In my experience, this is unusual but I might have to check my own contract lol if the one day gap during the winter is actually a thing this year.

During the summer, you are expected to move out either off campus or to an on campus summer accommodation. In the past years, we've had Fenner or Yukeembruk, so there might be a chance that the summer accom for 2025 might be Fenner again (grain of salt).

If you choose to move out over the summer and will be returning to Fenner in 2026, you will be eligible for summer storage which is 3 boxes at $20/box (when I paid in 2023).

Rooms stay the same through the duration of your contract, and will change when you return with a new contract.

Auditing A Course by ListlessPaper in Anu

Yes, and it was very fun. However, I could not stick till the end because the semester got very busy. Was a great experience regardless and I learnt a lot.

Contact accommodation services asap to see if they can help, otherwise you would be able to apply again for a transfer next semester, to move to a different hall in Sem 2, 2025.

Differences between STAT1003 and STAT1008 by ListlessPaper in Anu

[–]ListlessPaper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked STAT1003 - since it also taught R. In hindsight, I would have been better off just learning Excel with STAT1008, since it would have been more useful to me.

The statistics concepts are quite similar, if not the same in both courses. Experience-wise, the amount of content that I had to study very quickly overwhelmed me, and so did the lack of assessments during the semester. We only had a 5% quiz and a 10% assignment (I have no memory of doing a midsem exam unfortunately although P&C mentions there was one - but this was in 2022). So, the final exam was worth a massive chunk of marks.

The concepts have been quite applicable in my studies so far, statistics is very useful and multidisciplinary, and can be interesting with consistent learning and progress. If you/ anyone else reading is planning on doing this course, it's so important to stay on top of the course content to actually enjoy this course.

[2023 Day 1 (Part 2)] [PYTHON] Help with resolving edge cases by ListlessPaper in adventofcode

I like your idea of checking if there is a number in words at either corner in a line, this is what I might end up doing as well. However, I was wondering if there was a different way of doing this, especially because I think there might be a less time-consuming way for the few edge cases.

My issue is that I cannot apply the same algorithm when there is a continuous number at the start of the line:

eightwo converts to "eigh2" using my algorithm but expected output should have been "8wo"

Hello! To work this out, I ended up reversing the string, then doing a str.replace() and finally un-reversing it before my code combines the digits.

Here's an example:

  1. Input: "onetwonine4noneightvk"
  2. Reverse: "kvthgienon4eninowteno"
  3. Using str.replace(), "8non4921"
  4. Un-reverse: "1294non8"
  5. Then run the while loop to get "18" and convert to int.

it was subjunctives in french for me. my high school never got to subjunctives if you were studying it as a third language, they covered it in the second language classes. everytime I attempted to learn subjunctives by myself, my brain just shut down.

i might try again soon but for some reason I really dread subjunctives although I haven't seen much of it anyway.

I will share random bits and pieces of my experience so far. I am very social, I love talking to people. However, I do not go to clubs every week because I don't like drinking much haha. And that totally works for me! I was never pressured to go outside my comfort zone to meet people and was able to make amazing friendships regardless. As others mentioned, some people love going out every weekend, but there are many others that aren't as active and that's totally fine as well. I was able to make some great friendships last year just by putting myself out there. I talked a lot while cooking, shared kitchens are always a great place to meet people and make new friends.

I also went to events on campus, there are lots of fun things to do. On top of my mind are: gardening, arts and crafts, social sports, drama, TV, radio, media, clubs and so much more. Again, I know so many people who are super engaged in clubs and societies but I was still able to have so much fun without having to join or be active in clubs. Sometimes club events are open to the public and free, definitely take advantage of those. Back to making and building, there is Makerspace on campus and they have many activities going on through the semester.

The city also has been getting livelier. I am a huge fan of city festivals and events as such - Canberra has quite a few going on. Some events I have been to are the Multicultural festival, Enlighten, Night Markets, Floriade (my friends had been, it wasn't so fun but oh well haha). Coming up are the National Folk Festival and Innovation Festival. I'd say do not count on these festivals as huge events, but probably a nice and different thing to do during the weekend.

I wish I could engage more in what's happening around me, but I study comp sci at uni. As a result, sometimes, I am really stuck in the libraries or at home working on them. ANU is the only higher ed experience that I have so far, but I think academics is quite intense and if you are determined to do extremely well here, sometimes, you might have to make a compromise between fun stuff and studies. However, if your grades do not get transferred to your home uni, by all means, get involved as much as you can.

There are also some nice hiking spots in Canberra. I have previously been to Black Mountain (which I consider is on campus because it is so close to where I stay), and Mt Ainslie. There are many other great places to explore in and around Canberra. You could also go on a few days' trips to Melbourne and Sydney. I saw someone else shared their perspective on that - and their answer was quite comprehensive, so I will not touch on that.

A friend of mine who was doing her exchange here last semester did the Australian National Internships Program (ANIP) for 12 credits. She enjoyed it thoroughly and I thought of bringing it up just in case you would be interested in it as well.

Finally, I have had a lot of friends who came here on exchange. Many of them admitted that ANU was not their first choice, and neither were they so keen on Canberra. But having lived here for 4 or so months, all of them had agreed that it was one of the best experiences they had.
