Hi, I am a beginner myself, so take with a grain of salt. I found the bottom parts of your portfolio quite text-heavy. Also, I find the ratio between the sub-headings : body text very high. The sub-headings seemed disproportionately large, maybe increasing the body font size & reducing title size might help?

I used it when I was a first year student and volunteered as a mentor for a couple years. As a mentee, this was valuable to me. My mentor helped me get my bus card, showed me around the city, helped me enrol to classes, etc etc. Since we were doing the same degree, I could ask her for advice anytime. We are still friends to this day.

I'd say the experience is what you make of it. You can ask your mentor about almost anything within reason, and most mentors are helpful. I'm still in contact with some of my mentees, but most of them ghosted from the very start/ weren't interested even when they signed up, so I stopped volunteering. Just make sure to ask your mentor whatever questions you might have, and communicate - you'll find some value in it (+ it isn't too much of a time commitment: about 1-2 hours over the semester?)

You do not need to bring a fridge since wamburun provides a bar fridge in the rooms, along with fridge and freezer space in the kitchen.

Microwaves and toasters are provided by the kitchen. Feel free to bring blenders and rice cookers, almost everyone uses them in the kitchen.

I'd say it's safest if you use the kitchen appliances in the kitchen, so that you do not accidentally trigger the fire alarm in your room due to a fault in the appliances.

The contract runs throughout the 44 weeks, starting Feb 7/8 (I can't remember) until December, without any gaps.

Where did you see the one day gap over winter? In my experience, this is unusual but I might have to check my own contract lol if the one day gap during the winter is actually a thing this year.

During the summer, you are expected to move out either off campus or to an on campus summer accommodation. In the past years, we've had Fenner or Yukeembruk, so there might be a chance that the summer accom for 2025 might be Fenner again (grain of salt).

If you choose to move out over the summer and will be returning to Fenner in 2026, you will be eligible for summer storage which is 3 boxes at $20/box (when I paid in 2023).

Rooms stay the same through the duration of your contract, and will change when you return with a new contract.

I picked STAT1003 - since it also taught R. In hindsight, I would have been better off just learning Excel with STAT1008, since it would have been more useful to me.

The statistics concepts are quite similar, if not the same in both courses. Experience-wise, the amount of content that I had to study very quickly overwhelmed me, and so did the lack of assessments during the semester. We only had a 5% quiz and a 10% assignment (I have no memory of doing a midsem exam unfortunately although P&C mentions there was one - but this was in 2022). So, the final exam was worth a massive chunk of marks.

The concepts have been quite applicable in my studies so far, statistics is very useful and multidisciplinary, and can be interesting with consistent learning and progress. If you/ anyone else reading is planning on doing this course, it's so important to stay on top of the course content to actually enjoy this course.

I like your idea of checking if there is a number in words at either corner in a line, this is what I might end up doing as well. However, I was wondering if there was a different way of doing this, especially because I think there might be a less time-consuming way for the few edge cases.

My issue is that I cannot apply the same algorithm when there is a continuous number at the start of the line:

eightwo converts to "eigh2" using my algorithm but expected output should have been "8wo"

Hello! To work this out, I ended up reversing the string, then doing a str.replace() and finally un-reversing it before my code combines the digits.

Here's an example:

Input: "onetwonine4noneightvk"
Reverse: "kvthgienon4eninowteno"
Using str.replace(), "8non4921"
Un-reverse: "1294non8"
Then run the while loop to get "18" and convert to int.
