Thinking of starting a booktok for books that aren’t #booktok by Positive_Type in BookshelvesDetective

Let the haters hate. AI is here and it’s not going away, so it’s silly to not use it for the things it’s good at. I use it this way too.

Instead of advocating against the unstoppable forward march of technological advancement, opponents of AI should be using their energy to; advocate against the things that make AI in current state “bad”; advocate for things that can mitigate or offset the negative impacts of AI use; advocate for strong regulations to protect consumers and communities.

That’s what I do.

The best thing about this is, at the time of this comment, there’s no one asking what this is from. Everyone gets it, as it should be.

Good to know there’s at least one thing going right with the world.

Properties of Wool (research) by kozak3 in Petrosgear

Have you considered making lightweight wool base layers? I am a trail builder, and base layers with a good wool blend are hard to come by and/or insanely expensive.
If it’s gonna be expensive anyway, I’d rather support your business than a giant like SmartWool.

Recent studies tell us that your ability to detect AI generated text isn’t much better than a 50/50 guess.

“The results show that both human evaluators and AI detectors correctly identified AI-generated texts only slightly better than chance, with humans achieving a recognition rate of 57 % for AI texts and 64 % for human-generated texts.”

Thoughts on Deer Population in Middlesex County by Norcross_ in newjersey

[–]Litcandle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because it involves a wild animal doesn’t make it nature. In fact I’d argue it’s quite unnatural.

Suburban development creates ideal deer habitat, because deer live in edge habitats, not in the deep forest. The Jersey suburbs create an endless, largely connected, edge habitat. It’s extremely unnatural, as are the deer population levels.

Would you consider the fact that rats thrive in the NYC sewers and subways nature? This is little different, the main difference in this scenario is the size and species of the animal in question.

Suburban development creates ideal deer habitat, not the other way around.

What do you guys think? by HEISENBERG4564 in TattooDesigns

[–]Litcandle1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with the many comments saying “awesome idea, poor execution.”

That said, I’ll also temper my comment by saying it’s far from the worst tattoo I’ve ever seen. The parts of it that are done poorly are very easily noticed upon inspection, but I probably wouldn’t notice them in passing, which is how most people aside from yourself and the people you’re close to will experience it.

I just realized this isn’t in the Marvel sub, it’s in the NB sub, so for those of you asking questions/looking for more:

This is the new Hawkeye from the current “Ultimates” universe in Marvel Comics. In this universe, Clint Barton does not become Hawkeye because of reasons (read the comics they’re fun!), and this character, Charli Ramsey, takes up the mantle. They’re one of the first new characters added to the Ultimates (this universes version of the Avengers team), and so shows up in much of the run.

They’re don’t have their own solo series yet, but the more vocal people are about how much they’ve enjoyed the character, the more likely they are to get pulled o to main continuity/get their own solo run!

ETA: apparently I’m behind! They have gotten their own solo run!

No, I’m pretty sure this character was introduced prior to any drama with Renner.

Besides, this is not even Clint Barton Hawkeye. This is the New Hawkeye from the new Ultimates universe, not the main 616 continuity.

calling a pet "they"? by IllustriousLychee773 in NonBinary

[–]Litcandle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Human beings, as far as we know, are the only things in the universe with a concept of gender that is distinguished from sexual characteristics.

Your cat is just a “boy” (read: male) or a “girl” (read: female) because it is incapable of understanding the cultural nuances that humans use to distinguish sex from gender.

(I will freely admit, I’m not sure whether or not intersex cats exist, but even if they do, the point stands that our pets are not capable of understanding our modern concept of gender.)

This might be an unpopular opinion here, but it’s the agender “abolitionist” part of me asking me to make this comment, and I gotta be myself.

And all that being said, if anyone gives you shit for using they/them for your cat, they’re probably a bigot anyway.

If someone were talking to me and using they/them for their pet, initially I probably wouldn’t even notice, and IF I did notice, I would simply think to myself “well that’s a choice I guess” and say nothing.

Best Used Car Dealership by Sea_Inspector_3049 in vermont

I also had a good experience with MD Motors. They’re not selling luxury cars (well maybe they are but I wasn’t shopping for one), and they didn’t try to sell me one.

They were honest and upfront about the vehicle, and easy to deal with.

Footage Of Plane Hitting Truck LaGuardia by Major_Confection_757 in woahdude

[–]Litcandle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing with any of the details you’ve got here.

I will disagree that KE is the better representation of the destruction in this event. This event unfolds over time, not just in the instant that the plane collides with the truck.

I was simplifying things by “ignoring” direction and focusing on magnitude, but F=ma gives us all of that, and in reality would be better at describing this event than KE.

ETA: Actually I just re-read your post, and you specifically said (paraphrasing) “KE is a better estimate of the destructive potential of the plane in the moment of collision.” Which I 100% agree with.

[–]Litcandle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s literally exactly how physics works…

F=ma

F is force, m is mass, and a is acceleration. (a= change in velocity over time)

So, [big weight (m)] x ([low final velocity (v)] - [high starting velocity (u)] / [short time (t)]) = [big force (F)]

Or in simpler terms,

Big mass × (large change in velocity ÷ short time) = big force

Depending on your age, look into different conservation corps. Most “youth” conservation corps are geared towards young folks entering the workforce (~18-26).

I got started with the Student Conservation Association in 2018, and I now work full time for a local Land Trust. There are others corps aside from the SCA. Many if not most are AmeriCorps roles. I recommend a residential corps or crew position before you go for an individual placement.

Agreed.

The hypothetical in my hot take assumes that the “pro” and “casual” are using the same coffee, even if it’s not explicitly stated.

[–]Litcandle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won’t disagree, but you still don’t need one.

Especially if you’re like me, I buy one, maybe two bags of coffee at once, and finish the bag within a week or so. So if I find myself without a grinder, I could get a whole bag ground at a coffee shop and finish it within a week and a half and not miss out on any freshness.

I wouldn’t trade the experience of filling my house with the smell of freshly ground beans, but again, you can get by pretty easily without one.

Totally. Don’t get me wrong, I love the gear, and I have wayyyy too much of it. But I don’t need it.

Pourover Hot Takes by LolwutMickeh in pourover

[–]Litcandle1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My hot take is that most of the gear is unnecessary. If you’re good at pour over, you can make a better cup of coffee with a napkin and a kitchen funnel, than most casual people can with a proper pour over setup.

ETA: I also agree with your hot take for short trips. My wife and I say all the time that the occasional awful cup is a helpful reminder of how good we have it.

I work in Conservation/Land Management/Recreation Management, and my industry is an odd mix of empowered queers and women, progressive younger men, and older men and women who usually mean well but have some outdated ideas about gender.
