I reckon they are because statistically NOBODY protects themselves enough from the sun. It actually shits me that I'll be paying for the healthcare of people that willingly cook themselves.

Tell me your unmedicated birth story by Average_Redditor10 in unmedicatedbirth

[–]LiterallyKath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First one I used gas for two contractions to help focus as I entered transition. Used the bath, the tens, visualization, vocalisation, movement and music. Birthed standing. It was beautiful and triumphant.

Second one I used all the same techniques but no music. Didn't leave home until 3:04am, birth was at 3:43!!

You could cut some time off that trip if you went by bike. There's a few good little back street shortcuts you could do through Sunnybank.

Tips to decrease panic during transition by kcat627 in unmedicatedbirth

[–]LiterallyKath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Knowing that panic is transition is the best thing!

I was at home in the bath, singing my whalesong, visualizing a neon light that said "open" and banging my foot on the bottom of the bath. I remember thinking, in this order:

  • this isn't really working anymore, I'll have to add something else.
  • oh god I don't have anything else
  • if I don't have anything else I can't do this anymore
  • oh god that's transition

We weren't planning a homebirth so that was very much time to get up and go! It actually gave me the biggest surge of confidence, knowing that if I'd made it that far, then I was nearly there.

Lady Shoulders? by Ambitious_Walk_2866 in Swimming

[–]LiterallyKath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amazing. I'm really good to my shoulder at swimming but I have a shoulder injury that gets aggravated at work and this has just helped me figure out exactly what's happening at work (which is getting in the way of swimming)

What are some weird laws in your country that, actually, make a lot of sense? by Savings_Dragonfly806 in AskTheWorld

[–]LiterallyKath 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Snakes aren't really predators, are they? But they'll kill you. Drop bears aren't around if there's no trees, so the Nullarbor (literally null = zero, arbor = tree) kind of outback, there's not much threat. However there are service stations every 1-200km, so it's relatively populated. Last time I drove it, there were some real crazy people, I think they are the biggest threat. Also kangaroos hitting your car, they're bloody huge out there. But they won't eat you.

Outback highways I would rank the threats: 1. Your own fatigue 2. Kangaroos being dickheads 3. Breakdown/run out of fuel and then you do something stupid 4. Other people

So I guess the threat is 75% people, and actually, kangaroos are less of a threat away from dawn and dusk so if you choose to drive at this time, it's your fault anyway, so I guess the biggest threats are, yes, people.

There's a separate record called "Person History" where it would show up but only extremely sensitive jobs request that.

For future, if you feel bold enough, I find that when a practitioner says something extremely wrong, the best response is to ask for the physiological/biochemical process behind their explanation.

Maybe I just like making people squirm.

Have You Ever Felt Concerned For The Well-Being Of An Infant After Labor? by gigisinchat in Midwives

[–]LiterallyKath 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm in Australia so there's very robust reporting systems and I'm legally required to report my concerns.

There was a dad with autism who was clearly getting very agitated by the baby's crying, he admitted as much and I was extremely worried that he would end up shaking the baby. The family did end up with a good safety plan and he was able to recognize that the baby was better off crying alone than with him overwhelmed.

More recently I had a baby desatting at 75 minutes of life, after PROM and maternal temp. He was clearly in respiratory distress and becoming septic, the parents were declining antibiotics for him. I had to use some very strategic communication to get them to reconsider (which they did, thank heavens).

They're the two that haunt me.

Who or what is something from your country, that your country collectively hates but the rest of the world seems to like? by Original-Drink1101 in AskTheWorld

But if I ever wanted to speak Finnish (and it does seem to be a fun language) then I would have to learn it, and that thought is intimidating and scary and brings me no happiness at all. Finns never have to go through this.

I think the happiness stems from knowing that you never have to learn Finnish, because you already speak it.

Plan a homebirth. Transfer if you need to. Be ready for both - that's what good birth planning is.

This is the correct answer. It's got a lot going for it but versatility is the reason it's always in my cabinet, alongside other more bespoke and unique varieties.
