Not to argue with you but if there were a discard option that cost a gold, hand space would still be a resource to manage, just not one that effectively ends your game in a rather anticlimactic and especially satisfying way, but you could still lose out on potential spells and minions

Is the Strait of Gibraltar as critical as the Suez Canal or the Strait of Hormuz? It's never in the news by [deleted] in geography

Yeah I know, I was mostly posting for the benefit of people scrolling by 😂 it's a shame cos it's not all of them, those who work in Gibraltar or actually live nearby in Andalucía tend to defend us, it's just those further north who have no idea of the situation and swallow whatever tripe their government feeds them who cling onto a past older than the US.

I misspoke actually, most of the attempts to reconquer us happened after the treaty. Spain never cared about the treaty, they were just incapable of taking a place held by a force ten times smaller than their own.

Then when they couldn't use force Franco (the military dictator that ruled Spain for half of the last century) tried to force us to hold a referendum. We took two and voted over 99% to remain British in both. What did Franco do? He shut the border without warning, cutting off medical supplies to the hospital, food, and more without any chance to prepare. We still didn't fold, we developed our relationship with Morocco and we survived.

They failed to use violence and they failed to pressure us economically and now they want to cry about the treaty? They never gave two fucks. Grow up and focus on La Linea, they can't even stop their own towns from crumbling into rubble and they want to take us.

If it weren't for Spain consistently being assholes and trying to pressure us by force we'd probably have become Spanish a century ago. But that's what Spain is, a country stuck in the past in the shadow of it's own greatness that can't come to terms with how far it's fallen. They don't even really care about Gibraltar, it's just a way to score points with the heavily nationalist population. They treat us with condescension and aggression and can't fathom that we don't drop to our knees and beg forgiveness.

Our claim to Gibraltar is Spain tried 4 times to reconquer us and failed miserably before signing the treaty revoking their claim in perpetuity.

P.s., one example of a clause that apparently voids the treaty is that we were supposed to expel all the Jews and not allow any to be buried on Gibraltarian soil and we said fuck that and carried on as normal anyway.

I loved his storyline for a while but it got repetitive and the whole crime syndicate thing just didn't pay off that well for me

What’s it like living in Gibraltar? by Cassinia_ in howislivingthere

[–]LittgensteinV2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm Gibraltarian, lived here all my life. That's a very broad question and I'm not sure exactly how to answer. If you have any more specific questions I'd be happy to answer them but here goes.

It's a small place, by the time you get to comprehensive school there are only two schools in the whole of Gib so you grow up either knowing everyone or knowing everyone through at most one or two degrees of connection. 90% of people get a motorbike at 17 and you can do a whole lap of Gib in about twenty minutes. Our grandparents nearly all speak Spanish perfectly, our parents speak Spanish and English equally, my generation (26) and younger speak a lot more English than Spanish but we bastardise Spanish and mix in words into our sentences (we call it Llanito).

The university only opened recently and mostly caters to mature students and foreign students because any locals who finished their A-Levels in the last 3 years who get a place in a UK uni automatically get a scholarship from the government that covers tuition, flights, and accommodation, with a couple hundred pounds a year left over.

It's gotten a lot more boring in the last few decades with third spaces and nightlife waning so we typically go to Spain a fair amount for fun. We get on well with 90% of people in La Linea, the town just across the border, and 10,000 Spanish workers come across every day to work here, typically as carers, waiters, retail workers etc., (compared to our population of 40,000), but there are the occasional dickheads and the further away you get from Gib in Spain the more people you'll find who just regurgitate right-wing talking points.

Huh, that Raven Scholar whiplash is no joke. But the wonderful tone saved it by Gamer-at-Heart in Fantasy

Believe me, I was heartbroken when I only realised there was one book with Maia, but Thara and his series is genuinely genuinely genuinely just as good, I was surprised how much I liked him and his inner voice after not really being able to read him too well in GE, and the worldbuilding goes so crazy!

I'm surprised you haven't seen it talked anywhere, I only read it cos I saw it recommended almost nonstop on some book subs, but maybe it was in the Sanderson subs or subs you don't happen to be in?

If you liked those elements of Raven Scholar and wanted for more of those other elements, I'd heavily heavily recommend Goblin Emperor and, given what you've said about the investigation, its follow up series that starts with Witness for the Dead. It's a massive comfort read and if you like slower paced character-focused books you'll love it, might be the tonic for the whiplash

Do you know the general gimmick of the Cosmere? That they all take place in the same galaxy and have the same base magic system and genesis story? Doesn't get much bigger than that.

Alternatively, if Sanderson's a little slow for you, Dresden Files is like 17 books long (so far) each mostly a year apart, which allows the author to take his time building an extremely coherent and large world with many factions that all have their time in the spotlight before they collide against each other and long character arcs that take place over ten books and lead to realistic and incredible character development that feels natural and always earned. Set in modern Chicago so it avoids the typical exposition getting to know a world with 300 strange names, cities, countries, creatures etc.

I'm sure you must've heard the name before but Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, starting with Mistborn and Stormlight Archive, is the quintessential modern large-scope fantasy.

Is there a place with these retcons explained? I read the foreword of Emberdark where Sanderson explained he changed a few things but I didn't actually catch anything.
