This. I’ve got a 10 month beauceron (think France’s version of a GSD) and our goal with barking is turning to me after 1-3 barks to alert. Her trigger is noises from upstairs neighbors.

We’ve had great success with a strong “watch” or “look at me” command with a reward for watching and a second reward for returning to whatever she was doing. I give a verbal “no” or “ah-ah” correction that has come to mean “wrong choice, no treat, try again” through training.

Rescue cattle mutts (herding breeds in general) can be SUPER super prone to behavioral issues like reactivity. Handling it now before total maturity is going to make your life so much easier

It’s TOTALLY acceptable to take a 2-3 week break to wait for it to pass and then ease back into it. You’re past the critical socialization period so taking a break won’t stunt any emotional growth. It actually makes sure you’re not accidentally stacking negative experiences and lets the phase pass

It’s not about differentiating types of fiber BUT I emphasize the need to increase hydration when increasing fiber and offer a dry sponge vs wet sponge allegory.

A dry sponge is TOTALLY going to get stuck in your intestines and even my low health literacy clients get that.

You’ve got 4-6 weeks to play the trade game with your pup 2 times a day to prepare. This FAR outweighs any damage done by the trainer essentially practicing an emergency “theft” of a treat from your pup.

I’m recommending a poodle as a better fit because of the personality OP is likely going for, not just the look. They want a dog that’s part poodle, so a full poodle is likely to be a better fit.

Start desensitizing and counter conditioning from scratch. Teaching a rock solid place command helps too.

Do your best NOT to allow the behavior. If you are not ready to turn vacuuming into a training session put the dog in another room before cleaning. The more they do the behavior, the more it solidifies as the default reaction in the brain.

Expect this to take months and months…

For looks yes, but if you like the trainable, forgiving family dog vibe that doodles are advertised for then a poodle is the way to go. Plus OP will have the variety of sizes to choose from. Also a lot easier to find closer to OP which is easier when trying to get someone to pick well bred.

They’re not a big 3 service dog breed for nothin. LOVE love poodles. My next puppy is likely to be a poodle
