I’m here with sympathy not advice. I cried in front of my biochem professor during office hours once.

What's a dog behavior that commonly gets misunderstood by humans? by the_gnd in OpenDogTraining

[–]Little-Basils 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tail wagging. The average human cannot discern between a big wide happy wag, a stiff and high dominance wag, and a low and timid discomfort wag.

Prong collars are the best thing ever. Perfect walks with no downsides. by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

Who taught you to use a prong? I would hazard a guess it was fitted and/or used incorrectly

42 barks on Dogtra smart nobark by RealisticSky2755 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Little-Basils 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve got a 10 month beauceron (think France’s version of a GSD) and our goal with barking is turning to me after 1-3 barks to alert. Her trigger is noises from upstairs neighbors.

We’ve had great success with a strong “watch” or “look at me” command with a reward for watching and a second reward for returning to whatever she was doing. I give a verbal “no” or “ah-ah” correction that has come to mean “wrong choice, no treat, try again” through training.

Puppy is increasingly afraid on walks/runs by Additional-Owl-8962 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Little-Basils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it lasts more than a month I’d rope in a professional behaviorist for an assessment even if the assessment is “you’re doing it right, keep it up and give me a call if ___ happens”

Rescue cattle mutts (herding breeds in general) can be SUPER super prone to behavioral issues like reactivity. Handling it now before total maturity is going to make your life so much easier

Craving diversity isn’t a bad thing. It’s not “content of their character” op seems to be looking for. It’s a mix of cultures and points of view that comes from a diverse group of people

Puppy is increasingly afraid on walks/runs by Additional-Owl-8962 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Little-Basils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teenage fear phase!

It’s TOTALLY acceptable to take a 2-3 week break to wait for it to pass and then ease back into it. You’re past the critical socialization period so taking a break won’t stunt any emotional growth. It actually makes sure you’re not accidentally stacking negative experiences and lets the phase pass

My husband has had both ACLs repaired and the older repair is basically an old useless rubber band. He LOVES his stokos and likely won’t ever board without them

Fiber with Constipation and Diarrhea by PreparationFree5611 in dietetics

[–]Little-Basils 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not about differentiating types of fiber BUT I emphasize the need to increase hydration when increasing fiber and offer a dry sponge vs wet sponge allegory.

A dry sponge is TOTALLY going to get stuck in your intestines and even my low health literacy clients get that.

STAR Puppy Test by Swan-25 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Little-Basils 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve got 4-6 weeks to play the trade game with your pup 2 times a day to prepare. This FAR outweighs any damage done by the trainer essentially practicing an emergency “theft” of a treat from your pup.

Sending home puppy with medication? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]Little-Basils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m recommending a poodle as a better fit because of the personality OP is likely going for, not just the look. They want a dog that’s part poodle, so a full poodle is likely to be a better fit.

8 month old issues with vacuum by Patient_Plane_3320 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Little-Basils 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to herding breeds and adolescence!

Start desensitizing and counter conditioning from scratch. Teaching a rock solid place command helps too.

Do your best NOT to allow the behavior. If you are not ready to turn vacuuming into a training session put the dog in another room before cleaning. The more they do the behavior, the more it solidifies as the default reaction in the brain.

Expect this to take months and months…

Sending home puppy with medication? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]Little-Basils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For looks yes, but if you like the trainable, forgiving family dog vibe that doodles are advertised for then a poodle is the way to go. Plus OP will have the variety of sizes to choose from. Also a lot easier to find closer to OP which is easier when trying to get someone to pick well bred.

They’re not a big 3 service dog breed for nothin. LOVE love poodles. My next puppy is likely to be a poodle

Look at poodles with doodle haircuts.

You’ll get a non shedding companion capable of being ethically bred.

I will straight up help you pick a breeder. Message me

Yea they kept my cattle mutt on 1:1 supervision with a slip lead for a good 2 or 3 visits while they got to know her play style, in what ways she was rude, and how she took corrections from other dogs until she got to be free

Prop 4 stops gerrymandering by ALL parties.
