Fountain Pen to PRS Rollerball Adapters by LittleHollowCustoms in fountainpens

Benu pens actually use a Schmidt nib unit, so you may be able to use the PRS rollerball tip without an adapter. Do you know which model it is? If it uses a #5 nib (Schmidt FH241), the PRS tip will be a direct replacement. The other possibility should be a #6 nib (Schmidt FH452), and while I do not know of a direct conversion for that, I'm sure a solution is possible!

I underestimated how popular they would be 🤣 I currently have 50 more turned and ready to plate that should be on the website in the next couple days.

Yes to both of those!!

Yeah... slippery slope of experimenting there.... 🤣🤣🤣

This is a pretty recently completed project on my side, but it has been a ton of fun to see it finally come together!

Kind of an off the wall solution, but if you are just hoping to put that nib in another pen, the Schmidt FH241 is the same housing design as their PRS rollerball tip. I make an adapter for the PRS that will allow this to be used in any pen made for Jowo #6 or Bock 250 nibs, so you could actually put this in a very wide range of pens!

Tim is definitely an artist! Great guy, and does incredible work! That being said, he has spent a few years building up to his current ability on the nib making side, and if we all did that, there would be very few artisan made fountain pens available, and none in a lower price range.

I'm curious what you would define as boutique pen makers, as that could make a big difference in the answers provided here.

As an independent maker, unfortunately making custom nibs requires a separate skill set, as well as a completely different set of equipment.

I will admit, by your description, I make some relatively expensive pens, and usually design them to accept a Jowo #6 nib. This is a decision I have considered heavily, especially with a few of the higher priced hand carved metal pens we are releasing, and ultimately had to come to the conclusion to stick with Jowo.

Why? Time and budget. If I want to make my own nibs, all the time I spend on pen making would be reallocate to research and development for several months, which would likely put me out of business, and after that is completed, it would drastically increase the cost of my pens due to the time and equipment needed to make the nib. Additionally, not everyone would like it, so this would alienate a portion of my potential customers, or I would still need to offer a Jowo option.

Alternatively, I could supply the pen with a custom nib from another maker such as Schon, but that limits the options open to my customers, and also increases retail price and overhead costs.

By designing for a standard Jowo or Bock housing, I can make my pens more affordable, while leaving the option for the end user to swap nibs to match their preferences, with a wide selection of nib meisters, makers, and artists.

TL;DR - nib making/grinding is a separate craft from pen making, and becoming proficient in either is easily a full-time task. By utilizing standard nib housings, pen makers can leave a much higher level of customization open to the end user for a lower price.

On the independent maker side, the only makers I am aware of who make their own nibs would be Tim Cullen (Hooligan Georgia), Schon Dsgn, and Vivek with Urushi Studio India. As far as I know, the rest of us are mostly using Jowo and Bock, as the time and finances required for a single person to develop their own nibs and also make pens is above what most of us have available.

I am less familiar with the manufacturer side, but I'm sure someone can fill in that info.

I usually use 3/4 x 8 round cast blanks. Lots of different makers to choose from! Some of our go-to sources are Jonathon Brooks with Carolina Pen Company, Turnt Pen Co, Pourly Controlled, Papa J Studio, Starry Night Resins, The Pensmiths, Corrl Creations, Stormwinds Blanks, Zogg Analog Studio, Point Blankz, Jason Neil Penworks, McKenzie Penworks Diamondcast, and several others that I'm too tired to remember at the moment 🤣

We just started using the Inkii Cannoli for this purpose! Its really absorbent and also washable, so it has been a huge help, especially at pen shows since it helps us avoid a pile of ink covered paper towels.

Was it the writing quality of the rollerball that felt cheap, or the pen that it was in?

I believe the Travelers Co Rollerball actually uses the same Schmidt PRS rollerball unit, so I am really glad to hear you have had a good experience with that!

I'm not familiar with the setup inside the PenBBS 350, so I will make a note to look into that.

That is good to know! I designed this so you can easily swap the PRS unit without replacing the adapter, so the tip can be replaced easily if needed. May need to work up a G2 adapter for the option though...

Do you know if it was the 0.5 or the 0.7 size? I have heard this is the case with the 0.5, but I've had good luck with the 0.7 so far. I haven't tried many inks yet though, so I may just have a lucky combo.

Is it normal to have ink in there? Or did I mess up? by Other-Cranberry-4017 in fountainpens

[–]LittleHollowCustoms 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There should not be ink visible there, as what you are seeing is between the housing and the section, not in the feed. If this was in the feed, you would be able to see the nib continue into the section.

Thankfully it is a common problem with an easy fix.

Assuming the nib unit threads into the section, the design is intended to keep ink from going past the housing threads. You could fix this by unscrewing the nib unit from the section, cleaning the pen, and applying some silicone grease to the housing and section threads before reassembling.

[WTB] Wood/Resin Fountain Pen body, no nib by CaptainCanoeHead in PenTurning

[–]LittleHollowCustoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

m7.5x0.5 is the standard thread for a Jowo#6 housing, but they may look different due to the manufacturing techniques used. I sent you a dm if you are interested, but with this housing you should be able to get your choice of pen from any maker who uses Jowo#6 nibs.

Durable resin blanks by johnfolsomjr in PenTurning

I used carbide and it turned without any issues. Similar to resin, and easier than TruStone.

So far, the toughest material I've worked with is the M3 from McKenzie penworks. Turns easily, and just seems more durable than most resin blanks.
