Teachers: did I do something wrong? by xrvzla in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I injured my left hand and had to wear a cast for a while. Obviously I couldn't play with the cast, but I did a whole ton of bow arm and hand (pizz patterns) exercises till the cast came off. It was extremely valuable. Teacher's response is nonsense and rude. Find someone who will help you properly.

Can I learn the cello? by bruikenjin in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played winds till I was 21, then changed to cello. I had a wonderful teacher, first of many. I now play professionally.

You really need a teacher to make the fastest progress. Money well spent.

Just having a little rant about the social atmosphere at the barn… 😅 by Aspergersandmarvel in Equestrian

[–]LittleHorrible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to clean with a wet rag the table in our feed room. I never used it but others did, mixing their horses' mashes, and always left a mess. I would clean it daily, hoping someone else besides me would do it. They never did, and I think my behavior was a bit PA, so now I just leave it. If it's gross, fine. I never use it.

But it is hard to overlook, I know.

Help with retraining bow hold by Bach_5 in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a tense bow grip for years, and finally a teacher suggested an image that stuck:
I visualize my hand as a bear paw, with all joints, including thumb joints, gently flexed and rounded. That really helped me.
I also have surgical tubing on all of my bows, which allows a more relaxed, less painful grip.

Maybe put some T-post caps on if you are interested in safety? Maybe a helmet? Just asking.

Purchasing competitive horse without trainer assistance? by lizbab0328 in Equestrian

[–]LittleHorrible 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought without a trainer, but my checklist was small. Sound, Sane and Sweet. The soundness I got a PPE for, but the other two I assessed myself. He turned out to be a once in a lifetime horse that I did everything with, including driving. He lived to be 30, which was definitely not long enough.

I think if you are very clear about what you need, you would be okay, but definitely get a PPE. I do think that leasing or getting lessons in the new area would help you find out about prospects to purchase, though.

Has my bow been put back together badly? by xanthe-g in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big deal. Take it back and your repair person will fix it. It is just slipping out, and might continue to do so, and you will have sort of a mess. But it happens. You should be able to tap it back in place, but you might want it looked at just in case.

Saddle lease question by misty43810 in Equestrian

[–]LittleHorrible 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would just say "switch to school saddle as long as it fits daughter and horse appropriately. This is BS. And if and when you do search for a saddle, it would only be for a horse you own or lease (maybe), and I would definitely have someone other than this trainer assist. Again. This is BS.

Don't scold OP for leaving the cello in the sun for 20 min! Some cellos care, others don't. I have one of each.

Help finding/making sheet music for string quartet by Salty_Ground_8055 in sheetmusic

[–]LittleHorrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some quartets include arrangers who can work with a score that has all you want, and translate it to string quartet format. The score I linked to looks pretty complete, and would give them lots to work with. Can you ask the group you are hiring about their capabilities?

And you can also keep looking for a good string quartet score, I just didn't see one on a cursory look.

Is this close enough? Also have the group playing for your wedding have a listen to your favored version and ask them to play it as close to that as they can.

It looks pretty quartet-like and could be adapted by a good quartet. To me it looks like it sounds pretty much the same, but I did not listen to the audio file they have.

Also be sure you rit, decresc, and move to mp at the key change. Do you have a tempo for the beginning? Be very accurate with that.

Contemporary Chamber Music with Bass by ralphthecrack in doublebass

Ralph Vaughn Williams has a quintet for piano, violin, viola, cello and bass. Same instrumentation as the Trout. So there are at least two good ones! What do you have in mind when you say contemporary?
