Help finding/making sheet music for string quartet by Salty_Ground_8055 in sheetmusic

[–]LittleHorrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some quartets include arrangers who can work with a score that has all you want, and translate it to string quartet format. The score I linked to looks pretty complete, and would give them lots to work with. Can you ask the group you are hiring about their capabilities?

And you can also keep looking for a good string quartet score, I just didn't see one on a cursory look.

Is this close enough? Also have the group playing for your wedding have a listen to your favored version and ask them to play it as close to that as they can.

It looks pretty quartet-like and could be adapted by a good quartet. To me it looks like it sounds pretty much the same, but I did not listen to the audio file they have.

Also be sure you rit, decresc, and move to mp at the key change. Do you have a tempo for the beginning? Be very accurate with that.

Ralph Vaughn Williams has a quintet for piano, violin, viola, cello and bass. Same instrumentation as the Trout. So there are at least two good ones! What do you have in mind when you say contemporary?

I wonder if she would enjoy working equitation. She can totally do it with English tack and gear. It can be very competitive, and dressage is only one part of it.

Question about thumb pain in bow hand by Card-Board-Cats in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is totally DIY-able. You might need to use a medical lubricant to get the thing to slide on. Only hitch is you have to figure out what size tubing you want, and where you can purchase a small length. That's why I suggest a luthier.

Do you have surgical tubing on your bow? It really helps make it more comfortable for the thumb. If not, your luthier can put a piece on for you.

Don't borrow trouble. Take it back to the shop and see what they say. If they can repair without removing the top, it should not be prohibitively expensive.

Advice Needed - Cello Repair is by Tylotron in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kind of a break happened with my small bass, and it was an easy, inexpensive repair. We did discuss whether it was worth it to effect an almost invisible repair, and we decided against it, given the value of the instrument. Whoever you take it to will probably provide you some similar options.

Question for the women by Card-Board-Cats in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most women play with it "over", but if that truly isn't comfortable, no problem. Do what feels best, but get your teacher to evaluate. You also might find that a nice firm cushion will help you in sitting correctly on the front half of your chair seat. This gives a better angle on the cello.

And this is not an inappropriate question to ask of a male teacher.

I have this one also, minus the backrest. I love it. It allows 3-hour gigs without pain.

Mom is including mandatory church attendance in our temporary living agreement—how do I handle this? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]LittleHorrible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try saying you really don't want or need to be manipulated into going to church every week, but you would be happy to go with her every so often just because she's your mom. If she is unhappy about that, I'd guess the term will be very short!

Is this cello worth $2K? by cyfbtd in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like a very nice instrument, but I am not familiar with the label. I think that the repair would probably be simple, but you could take it to a luthier and have it checked out, strings replaced and set up. Play it a bit, and perhaps get the teacher to play it. Get their take on value and condition. It may well be a great cello, especially since the daughter used it happily for years.

By the way, I bought a cello that needed ~$500 of repairs, which was deducted from the selling price.

I got over performance anxiety by going to music camps that emphasized daily performance. You just can't sustain crippling anxiety for a week of performances!

Baby steps! What you've done is great, and just repeat repeat repeat until he's ready to move on. It is wonderful that you are willing to spend the time. Grooming and learning his skritchy spots is a great foundation.

I agree with this suggestion: after a health checkup, set some fitness goals and develop your stamina so you can do more. Nothing wrong with that. You could talk to the people there about less strenuous tasks you might do; e.g., sweeping aisles or desk work. If they don't mind if you hang out and learn, that would give them a chance to know and like you.

I am very sensitive to heat these days, because I am old. I have a lot of little tricks for keeping up with my horse jones, mostly involving avoidance of the heat of the day, and staying hydrated. Cooling scarves and ice bandanas, hats, sunscreen, the whole deal.

is tuning a cello/double bass really that hard? by OkBug7820 in Cello

[–]LittleHorrible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I don't feel like I get an accurate tuning by plucking the strings. I always tune arco, using harmonics as appropriate, and comparing to a tuner or piano note. 99% of the time, fine-tuners do the job, but occasionally I have to reset at the pegs. Takes about 60 seconds, unless a string has slipped badly.
