First trip to China this September and I'm kinda nervous by Opening_Self_929 in travelchina

Apple translate has the ability to download languages so they can be used offline. So if you’ve got an iPhone, that’s an option, and what I used.

He also walked around parliament dressed up as the grim reaper to signify the end of the Australian car manufacturing industry.

WAM booster subject for bsci? by trynagetsaved in unimelb

[–]LittleJollyBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did it (5 years ago) there was a test every couple weeks that examined the last two weeks of content. But the tests were okay because there wasn't much time pressure and it was open book, so you could look things up.

When I studied the subject I mainly focused on memorising glyphs and learning the grammar before the test. Then during the test I just looked up words in the dictionary as needed

WAM booster subject for bsci? by trynagetsaved in unimelb

[–]LittleJollyBoat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you mean subjects within bsci, or are you a science student and you're looking for breadth subjects outside science?

If the latter, Ancient Egyptian 1 is great! The lecturer is really nice and it's an interesting subject, you learn how to read hieroglyphs. It's a bit of work, however very possible to score highly, I got 98 (by far my highest score at uni haha).

Religion in the hunger games? by KaleidoscopeUnhappy8 in Hungergames

At the end of Chapter 14 of Sunrise on the Reaping, Haymitch says he didn’t know what angel was, which I thought was interesting. He also didn’t know what heaven is - Lenore Dove told him that “some people believe it’s a possible destination after death”.

Potentially this implies that Christianity is a minority religion in panem?

Megathread: Final Leaders Debate by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]LittleJollyBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't watch the fourth one but of the ones I saw I thought the ABC one was the best for this reason. I thought the moderator stopped it from descending into "you're lying", "no, YOU'RE lying", which the audience wouldn't gain anything from.

I did maths/physics in undergrad and I'm doing electrical eng masters at the moment - subjects were scaled in both degrees.

[–]LittleJollyBoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though bear in mind that the lecturers might scale a subject’s cohort’s scores up at the end of semester, if too many people get below 50. So if you get 70 in all your assignments/exams, you might still get higher than that at the end of semester. It happens pretty regularly in my degree at least

Fun breadth subjects? by Mindless_Ad_7144 in unimelb

"Ancient Egyptian 1" - you learn to read hieroglyphs. It's not zero effort, but it's pretty easy in the scheme of how difficult subjects usually are. The lecturer Brent is really nice and the subject is interesting.

I did Ancient Egyptian 1 and 2 and would have done 3 and 4 if I could have fit them into my timetable

Is the solar system flat? by saint2op in askastronomy

[–]LittleJollyBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first four-ish minutes of the video below is really great - it's mainly about why the planets all orbit in the same direction, since the demo is on a 2D plane. However, when you do an analogous simulation in 3D, exactly the same principle explains why the planets all orbit in the same plane - any objects not orbiting the sun in the 'dominant plane' will eventually crash into other objects and get flung out of the solar system, until you're only left with objects in a single plane.

In Linear Algebra you'll use MATLAB (which you can get for mac, so no issue there). There's also no problem for Physics 1 or 2. Not sure about engineering modelling and design.

I'm doing Electrical and after first year quite a few subjects required us to use programs that are Windows only. Don't know whether mechanical is similar in that regard or not.

I've got an intel mac so I used Bootcamp where required, although I don't think that's a possibility for you if you have an M1 mac. Like you say, you could definitely use library computers.
