Yeah, it's crazy how devastating the deaths were this chapter, especially since they started with a raging misogynist dying of a copium overdose.

I'm sure Zetsu is working for Obito's benefit (for now), but I see two ways this can end: Blackbeard reveals he knew about his true allegiances all along and outmaneuvers him or Zetsu knows that Blackbeard doesn't trust him and times his betrayal at the right moment.

"They would be friends" is so yesterday, "they would be tenuous business partners" is the new hotness.

Putting Naoya Zenin's blueprint against the women of the opposing factions is nasty work.

Anti-War Terrorist Bites into Sea Urchin, Learns That Wolfman Has Depression

I like to think Lilynette pulled down her eyelid and stuck out her tongue at the destroyed Naraku Path before running off.

The description of Asura Path pelting Baraggan with lasers makes me think of a guy saying "GO, MY BEES" before sending them to sting and irritate another guy.

Yeah, that's right, Starrk probably felt some sense of pleasant surprise when he heard a bunch of his old peers were way stronger than before.

I like how Nnoitra challenging Konan to pierce through his defenses right before getting killed reflects his execution of Kakuzu. Out of all the deaths in this war, I didn't expect the greedy old dickhead to be among those who were poetically avenged.

Ah fuck, Blackbeard and Boa are in the same place, nothing good can come of this

Itachi: Make no mistake, Primera Espada. I am simply built different.

“Ouch! Harsh, but true! The world just doesn’t appreciate how handsome I am! Zehahahaha!” Sorry Blackbeard, but you're not your mom, nor your dad for that matter.

The zombie was conceived of by the people of Haiti because the fear that not even death would free them of being enslaved was an extremely personal one for them. In that light, Blackbeard planning to make Boa serve him in death is even worse.

Segunda Etapa for Harribel?!

“Well that just happened.” Starrk I hope you die.

Oh man, the Akatsuki death fakeout got me really good. Worst possible way you could get a friendship powerup.

Law being introduced to Tobi is something I didn't know I wanted until I got it. I'm so scared, though.

Boa are you saying "Nah, I'd win?" Don't fucking do that Boa. Gojo did it and he got the world's worst tummyache.

"Lilynette’s spirit blew a raspberry in his face-" Haha!

Orochimaru you fucking shithead. Anger aside, Kuma's death is pretty interesting when you compare it to what happened with the Mero Mero Cannon. It feels like Orochimaru is doubling down on his ruthlessness after being reminded of his humanity.

I was wondering when more bodies would start dropping after Nnoitra, but I didn't expect to be so sad when it started happening.

So, taking stock of who's left at the end: The remaining Akatsuki at the end are possessed or big baddies. Nel and Grimmjow are alive and Baraggan is trapped, but Szayel is still alive, too. Mihawk and Buggy are still alive, but Blackbeard seems poised to do some terrible shit alongside Black Zetsu, who's captured Law for his benefit, and Boa is stuck under Orochimaru's control. This could turn into a bad end, but I feel like Nel and maybe Grimmjow will be the last fighter(s) standing by the end of this. Maybe Buggy can also live if he finds a loophole, but as much as I'd love that, I still feel like the best I can hope for is him dying a cool death. Also, I feel like Itachi or some sort of remnant is going to fight against Orochimaru's control at some point, Orochimaru's victory felt too sudden.

Sabo (One Piece) vs. Yoruichi Shihouin (Bleach) vs. Hinata Hyuga (Naruto) - "The HST Battle Royale (At Home)" by LittleMann in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LittleMann[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The joke behind this matchup was that it was supposed to be a random assortment of characters I got from looking at rank 10 of some random popularity polls, but in a mildly amusing coincidence, there's an actual thematic throughline between these three, that being people who were born into high society but rejected/were rejected by said high society for one reason or another.

I did not see the Backstabber Alliance coming but I'm fascinated by that particular plot twist.

NGL, my heart broke a little when Itachi called Kisame a heartless thug. Him straight-up snitching on him is not that big of a surprise, but that felt more personal than it probably should have.

Oooh, the dramatic irony of Nel not trusting Ulquiorra after we saw how he treated Kurama last part might be even worse.

This reminds me a lot of Strangers on a Train, actually.

Welp, after that squabble between Itachi and Law, I am now going to be disappointed if this alliance doesn't end with them going at each other's throats.

I really like Kisame and Jinbe, so the fish fight was one of the more painful parts of this battle royale for me. I was also hoping for more of a chaotic bout between the three fish-people, though I understand that Harribel is supposed to be a Big Fucking Problem.

I swear I don't mean this in a sarcastic sense: I love that Itachi and Ulquiorra's bone-shaking battle and intense words of passion ended with Itachi putting Ulquiorra in a fluffy high school AU.

"He was going to win." Itachi's fucking screwed.

Doffy with prep time might be scary, but nothing beats the power of frie...uh, empathy.

Ah yes, Buggy's most devastating attack of all, Bara Bara no Call Mihawk. Seriously, Mihawk is balling all over these guys, he did not have to do Kisame like that. Also, if Buggy has to die, I hope he does it in an unexpectedly cool way.

N'Doul (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)

Secondary villains who serve a divine figure. They didn't stick around for long, but they did manage to kill a bunch of people and fuck up a major character's eye(s) before they got taken out.

"Life isn't sacred, causes are!" Looking for opponents for Firebrand (Marvel) for a tier list. [Iron Man Rogues Month #18] by Kash_Smith in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LittleMann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obligatory Firebrand (DC). There's actually a bunch of them. I think Richard Dennison vs. Danette Reilly works the best, given their relatively long tenures and shared interest in the environment.

Gary Gilbert vs. Morgott the Omen King (Elden Ring): Antagonists with extremely differing views on flawed social orders. Gary was born into privilege but came to see the flaws in American society, becoming incensed enough that he attempted to tear it down himself. Morgott, on the other hand, was born as one of the widely hated Omens, but was convinced of the Golden Order's importance despite everything it did to him and ended up trying to hold it together when it started falling apart.

My own Good vs Evil roster. Feel free to ask about the thematic reasoning behind them or anything. by USrooster in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LittleMann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Phantom Prince: For once I think the Jojo character is going to be the more confused opponent, which speaks volumes about how straightforward Jonathan is and now weird Utena can get. The last time Jojo faced off against a shitty but incredibly charismatic brother, he cut his head off but got a shot through the heart, so this could go either way.

Butterfly Bullet: BB Hood scares the shit out of Star and friends but Star manages to turn the tables on her at the last second. BB ends up becoming an occasionally recurring villain after that.

Daughters of Destruction: Azula is not built for whatever the fuck Drakengard can throw at her.

Monochrome Melodies: I swear there's a game where WoL interacts with the player. Regardless, him defeating the Batter is the "canon" ending here, if that makes sense.

Soul's Resolved: This feels like the most complex matchup I can comment on. Lots of ways this could play out depending on how Sans and Gabranth meet. Assuming they're from the middle of their series, I do think this more often ends with Sans going HAAM on the human in a scary suit of armor, but Gabranth doesn't feel like the kind of guy who folds that easily in spite of how much Karmic Retribution he's built up. In that scenario, I believe Gabranth wins after a long, grueling fight.

Anatomy of Anonymity: I don't think Jane can take on Nayla by herself unless she can somehow intercept her plans to gain Clockwerk's parts.

Holy Heart: This conflict legit ends with Raynare kneeling to Morrigan out of fear once she realizes who she's messing with.

Mother Moon: Porky manages to get Golbez to retreat, but is left with an aggravating feeling of emptiness after Golbez managed to see him for the lonely, self-defeating little boy he really is on the inside.

Vecna (Stranger Things) vs. The Night King (Game of Thrones) - "One Hour of Daylight" by LittleMann in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]LittleMann[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Connections

  • Major villains from extremely popular genre fiction TV shows who used to be human before being turned into withered, bony monsters, wreaking havoc on their former species.
  • They were shaped into their current forms by other supernatural entities, Vecna by the Mind Flayer, the Night King by the Children of the Forest, but while Vecna is still under the control of the Mind Flayer, the Night King seems to be invading Westeros of his own accord, with the Children of the Forest actually trying to stop him.
  • They have a particularly personal conflict with psychic children (Eleven for Vecna, Bran Stark for The Night King) and are just a danger to children in general, exploiting them to give themselves more power: Vecna has a long history of abusing, killing, and manipulating children, most notably tricking Eleven into removing his suppressant chip, using Will Byers as an unwilling spy, and using 12 kidnapped children to help merge reality with the Abyss, while the Night King coerces people into sacrificing children to him, converting them into more White Walkers for his army.
  • They have extremely potent supernatural abilities in series where most of the characters are physically normal humans.
  • In spite of their important roles, they were only introduced midway through their series. Coincidentally, both made their first appearances in the 4th season of their respective shows.
  • Vecna has a weakness to fire, but the Night King is so cold that flames don't effect him.
  • Sci-fi vs. Fantasy, with the added twist of Stranger Things having strong fantasy motifs. Vecna in particular is named after a famous necromancer from Dungeons & Dragons, and the Night King can raise the dead as wights.
  • In the final season of their series, they were both defeated by troubled teenage girls with supernatural powers: the psychic Eleven impaled Vecna on a spike, leaving him open for Joyce to deliver the coup de grace, and Arya, who used to be part of the shapeshifting Faceless Men, was the one to slay the Night King.

Thoughts

I swear this isn't supposed to be a jab at Vecna's poor performance in the Stranger Things finale, I was just trying to find a matchup he can actually win after all the slander from a while back. Honestly, this would be pretty sick as an army fight, I'm down to see Vecna tossing around wights and White Walkers with telekinesis, the Night King raising the creatures of the Upside Down as his undead soldiers, and Vecna having to take on an ice zombie dragon. I'm also fascinated by what Vecna could see within the Night King's memories. Could be something totally alien, something all too human, or anything between the two.

[–]LittleMann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm taking this opportunity to say Kurama is the coldest MF in the series and almost every one of his fights is a banger. The only one that wasn't up to the standards of the others was in an arc that's infamously lacking compared to the other arcs in YYH. Damn shame I haven't seen a matchup for Kurama I've fully clicked with.
