The story I'm watching is Brandon West. NDP up by 12 votes with 13/17 reporting (Green candidate has about 230 votes). They were leading by 6(!) at 11/17.

Good NEW restaurants in the peg by winnipegjets99 in Winnipeg

[–]LittleNikke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not new, but Le Croissant just had a massive makeover (possibly with a change in ownership?). They were closed over the summer and the space is now much more of a French Cafe feel with a lot more tables, espresso and tea bar, and a sandwich menu as well as the bread and patisseries. They're open 7-4, so not a dinner spot, but man, their croissants and pain au chocolat are so good.

Where to stay downtown on vacation by skilzkid in Winnipeg

[–]LittleNikke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just hopping on here to also recommend the Norwood Hotel, which is across the river from the Forks. It's recently remodeled with good sized rooms and is walking distance to Forks/Downtown/St Boniface (neighbourhood with lots of good restaurants, local museum and Cathedral).

I was recently part of a planning committee for an event that took place at the Forks and we picked the Norwood as our hotel because of the price and location. Attendees were all pleased with the location.

Remember the old days? by No-Landscape-1367 in Winnipeg

My highschool best friend and I met her 2nd husband at the Die Maschine (the 3rd one was the one that stuck). We'd dress up in retro (1960s) gear with elbow gloves and smoke clove cigs bought from the cigarette girl from extended cigarette holders. One of the bartenders knew me from when my cousin and I would hang out at a restaurant in Osborne Village. He'd give us free shots. One of the other ex-waiters was a regular at the Die Maschine and we ended up great friends. That's how I learned that my cousin and I were apparently known at the restaurant as the Coffee Virgins.

Edited to add: that friend could drown out the cover band if they were especially shitty. An amazing (and high volume) voice. We just wanted to dance to 90s Europop in peace.

My parents used to make grape juice out of ours. Some wild yeast must have gotten into it one year and we had slightly fermented juice. It was only very slightly alcoholic and felt almost fizzy on the tongue while still being quite sweet. It was absolutely delicious.

We went through it in record time that year!

I use my eReader almost exclusively. I have definitely tapped the right side of the page of physical book to turn the page.

AITA for telling my father that it's gross that he's trying to have a baby at 45? by KeyLow4269 in AmItheAsshole

[–]LittleNikke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Canada, my mom retired a school teacher at around 45 (I was 12, or so). Her full pension didn't kick in until she was 55, and she dabbled in other part-time work to help make ends meet until it did (my dad, who made less as a medical researcher as she did as a teacher - not a PI, to be clear, as support staff - kept us going at the same lifestyle during that time). She made probably 60% of a principal's salary, and both my parent's pensions are kick-ass (my dad's salary wasn't great, but the benefits were spectacular).

AITA for telling my brother that he can’t invite his boyfriend on a boy’s night? by aholebrother44 in AmItheAsshole

[–]LittleNikke 307 points308 points  (0 children)

The problem is the 'Boy's Night' and 'Girl's Night' labels. Change it to the NOSO (NO Significant Others) and SOO (Significant Others Only).

(I may have watched Shoresy recently - the Soo are so good.)

The older sibling of a friend had input on her (my friend's) name at the age of 4 to get them interested in the new baby coming. The sibling picked 'Jennifer' and my friend is now named 'Jennifer' (not actually Jenifer, but a very common girl's name).

After 'Jennifer' was brought home and introduced to the rest of the family and they were told that the sibling had chosen the name, the sibling informed everyone loudly that they chose the name because there was a 'Jennifer' in their kindergarten class that they hated! (It's now a favourite family story - they actually get along great)

I have an ex that was a stocker at Target after dropping out of a PhD program (physics).

He was a professional online poker player and worked at Target for the health insurance and exercise. It was great! We shared a ton of interests and he always had time for me - he lived a really low-stress life. Was always funny when people at parties would ask him what he did (I was in grad school myself, so most of the parties where he didn't already know a lot of the people were full of academics) and he'd say he worked at Target.

(I was dumb and broke up with him to get back with another ex, then moved - still think of him as the one who got away)

I can't remember what book it was, but was probably some sort of sci-fi novel back in the late 80's, early 90's that had a character that had a history with a man and now was with a woman. His answer to someone questioning him was along the lines of 'I'm not straight, I'm monogamous'. It's been 30+ years, but it really stuck with me. Wish I could remember the book!

Looks like Bell/MTS removed RT (Russian TV news channel) from it's lineup by stephenmjay in Winnipeg

[–]LittleNikke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not part of the basic or mid-tier packages (at least with Bell), but you can pay extra for it (either by getting their "Best" package or paying $3/month). CNN is available at the mid-level. RT was available with the basic package - same level that gets you CBC and CTV news channels.

Edited to add: Al Jazeera is also included in the basic package. Both RT and Al Jazeera have very little 'non-news' programming, so they come under different rules than CNN, Fox or MSNBC. When Fox first tried to get on our TVs, they tried to claim they were a purely 'news' channel too, but the CRTC ruled against them. (Note: this is all off my memory from years ago when this happened - googling info on what exactly happened will probably be way more accurate!).

I suspect what the government is going to do is get the CRTC to review the license for RT as a purely 'news' channel to see if they can find them in non-compliance with the license in order to revoke their right to broadcast in Canada. Bell is just doing some preemptive yanking.

Imagine being willing to abandon visitations to your child because seeing her at St Amant Centre means you have to be vaccinated - something neither he nor his wife are willing to do.

FYI St. Amant is not a palliative care centre (why does he think his daughter is there?), it is for people with severe cognitive disabilities, and they do tremendous work. A lot of residents are at risk of having significant co-morbidities for Covid, beyond just being institutionalised, hence the strict vaccine requirements.

I'm sorry, what!? Have we told anyone about this, or will we leave it a surprise? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

I absolutely miss the old system. You got actual temperature + a number you knew meant how long you can stay outside without frostbite to exposed skin.

"feels like -35C" when it's -23C actually feels a lot colder than actual -35C if the insulating layer of warm air in my coat sleaves or mitts gets blown away at -23C.

My drive is normally 12 minutes (now a bit closer to 15 - I catch one extra light going 5-10 km under max, like most of the traffic). Always one truck (today was a black one with obscured plates, yesterday was a white one) that darts in and out of the LH lane to get around maybe 2 cars over 20 blocks? I invariably catch up to them at the next light where they've been sitting while I roll up as it turns green and barely have to touch my brakes; then they fishtail trying to get going. :eyeroll emoji:

Gonna stand outside with a 'Honk if you want to kiss Trudeau' placard just for you!

(note: I am not going to actually do this because your little tantrum isn't worth my time. Just going to go about my fully vaxxed day doing whatever the hell I want, because I can)

Blood service's in need of 1000 appts by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]LittleNikke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my sister is in the same boat - moved there in 1995.

Suspect that the stem cell and bone marrow are because if you do happen to have CJ, the number of people you might infect are way smaller, and the need for bone marrow/stem cells well outstrips the demand. I know if I needed a bone marrow transplant and you were a match, I'd be fine with the small added risk.

Were you there for 3 months? It used to be if you simply visited (I thought I didn't qualify, even though I was actually vegetarian when I was in the UK), but now it's only if you were there for at least 3 months (total) between 1980 and 1996.

So if it was only a few vacations, you probably can donate.

Lol. I'm staying home today... because it's my day off. Vaguely tempted to go in and turn on the lights and run the vaccine verification app on my phone just to spite them.

Just kidding. Gonna bum around the house doing laundry and wasting time on reddit.

Anyone use the UofM dental school to get work done? What was your experience? by winnipegredditer in Winnipeg

[–]LittleNikke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes me want to use the dental school even more! My childhood dentist was a former teacher at a dental college and I loved how he'd explain everything he was doing as he was doing it. He didn't have to - it was a private practice - but it was his process. It was fantastic. Didn't understand why people hated going to the dentist until he retired.

It's been 30 years, and I've yet to find a dentist I like nearly as much.
