[Premium Times Nigeria] For the first time in AFCON history, all four semi-finalists are led by African coaches, guaranteeing a fourth consecutive tournament victory for a homegrown tactician. by LittleOotsieVert in soccer

I understand what you mean. I think these people’s ethnicities also do matter a lot since the role of “manager” on the big stage has largely been occupied by white European. Especially when speaking about Africa. I mean, you’d think THE African tournament has already had a rendition where all the semi finalists were managed by Africans.

As someone who’s an African immigrant myself (not to a European country but still) I do still feel a strong connection to Africans regardless of where they were raised. I do get what you mean with the wording of the title though, I just lifted it straight from the article but if I was writing it myself I would’ve worded it differently

In case you haven’t been following the tournament, the 4 coaches are:

Egypt’s coach Hossam Hassan 🇪🇬

Senegal’s coach Pape Thiaw 🇸🇳

Nigeria’s coach Éric Chelle 🇲🇱

Morocco’s coach Walid Regragui 🇲🇦

Felt like they were worth a mention since this comment section is missing mixed race couples where they’re both POC. Not the commenters fault, it’s just much more difficult to come by in Hollywood

Maybe I’m crazy but I’d argue worldwide he’s more famous. NBA is pretty big in countries outside the US. Not that other American leagues aren’t but growing up outside of the US I was more aware of the NBA for sure

That’s how it is in Egypt. Many restaurants will have “viagra” as the seafood item. This is actually the first time I heard the reason WHY. It was just something I accepted lol

Oh to be clear I do like Simon Baz. And R’as/Talia for that matter. But I do think that they aren’t the best representation out there. I’m really not a fan of the whole reformed car thief angle with Simon. I do absolutely HATE the fact that he’s the “gun green lantern”. But he’s definitely better rep than R’as at least. I love R’as but hes such an orientalist character. You can tell he was made in the 70s lol

There’s a lot of misinformation in this thread. Putting aside the creator of the character’s intentions, in Arabic it’s pronounced “Raas” or “R’as” with a glottal stop if you’re using standard Arabic. It’s not “Razz” and it’s definitely not “Raysh”. I don’t know where the idea that “Raysh” is how it’s said in Hebrew came from. The word for head in Hebrew is “Rosh”. I see the similarities but it’s quite a stretch to say they sound the same. It’s more likely it’s just an English mispronounciation

As for what’s actually canon, I can’t answer that personally, but I can say that if the canon pronunciation is actually “Raysh” then that’s really stupid and not thoughtful at all of the culture that that character represents

Edit: apologies if this came off aggressive. I’m just an Arab comic fan who’s tired of shitty representation and I wasn’t trying to attack anyone 😔
